Chapter Five
Conclusion and Recommendation
This chapter consists of two major parts namely conclusions and
recommendations. First, the researcher summarized this study including
background of the study, aim of the study, and also the result of the study.
Second, the researcher aimed some suggestions after conducting this study
Conclusion
The reason why the researcher chose authentic materials used by preservice teacher in their teaching practice as topic to be researched was because
researcher had experienced in using authentic material in teaching practice. The
researcher found the advantages of using authentic materials in teaching practice
The researcher interested to find out the perspectives of pre-service teachers in
using authentic materials in their teaching practices, especially in English
Education Department of University Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta. This research
had three purposes. First, it was aimed to explore type of authentic materials
commonly used by the pre-service teacher at EED of UMY during their teaching
practice. Second, it was intended to find the significances of used authentic
materials in the teaching process. Third, it was conducted to identify the
disadvantages of using the authentic material in the teaching process.
The result of this research shows that two kinds of authentic materials

were commonly used by pre-service teacher at EED of UMY. Fist, printed
authentic materials such as picture, newspaper, magazine, and literature. Second,
auditory authentic materials are also used by pre-service teacher such as video,

song, and movie. The finding of this research also shows that the significant of
using authentic materials in the teaching practice of pre-service teacher at EED of
UMY. The significances were divided into two categories. First, significances of
using authentic materials for teacher. They are; the authentic materials were easy
to get for teacher, authentic materials were can be used for teaching multiple
skills, and authentic materials made the teacher become more creative. Second
were the significances of using authentic materials for students. Authentic
materials made the students’ motivated and interested in learning process.
Furthermore, the finding of this research shows that the disadvantages of using
authentic materials in the teaching practice of pre-service teacher at EED of
UMY. In line with the significant of using authentic materials the disadvantages
of using authentic materials were also in two categories. First was the significant
for teacher. They are; the authentic materials out-date easily, and make teacher
should be more careful in selecting the materials. Second was a disadvantage of

using authentic materials for the students that authentic materials had difficult
content (vocabulary and language), so it made the students easy to confused.
Recommendation
This study also provided suggestion regarding to authentic materials used
by pre-service teacher at EED of UMY in their teaching practice Thus, the
recommendation is for the students, lecturers and also other researchers who want
to conduct a research under the same topic.
For pre-service teacher. This research led pre service teacher to use
authentic material as its benefit toward students’ improvement. This research also

recommended the pre service teacher to use the kinds of authentic material
revealed by this research’s finding, but still, the pre-service teacher has to select
the appropriate authentic material that they want to use to teach the students
because this research also found that there are some disadvantages in using the
authentic material. This research also recommended the pre service teacher to use
the kinds of authentic material revealed by this research’s finding. Besides, there
are kind of authentic materials which are commonly used in teaching process, and
pre-service teacher can get the advantages and weaknesses. From those

advantages and weaknesses of authentic material, the pre-service teacher can
anticipate in using authentic material in teaching process. Otherwise, pre-service
teacher should also be selective in choosing the material.
For institution. Based on the result of this research the institution
hopefully can provide the authentic materials that can easily got by the pre-service
teacher. Besides, the institution can supply the guidance of authentic materials
conducted in teaching course regarding the weaknesses of authentic material.
For other researchers. Other researchers might use this research for their
references in doing the further research deals with authentic materials. Lastly, the
other researchers hopefully can find out more detail information and expand the
information related to the authentic materials.
