CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

A. Background of the Study
Teaching English in Indonesia is focused on the ability of student’s
communication. The communication can be in oral and or written forms. The
learner should be able to learn the four language skills, namely : listening,
speaking, reading and writing ( Depdiknas, 2003:6 ). The learners should have
the abilities in reading and listening to support their speaking and writing.
As one of the four language skills, writing has always occupied place in
most English language course. One of the reasons is that more and more
people need to learn to write in English for occupational or academic
purposes. English department students, especially, need to learn writing and
prepare themselves for the final academic assignment, thesis writing. This, in
terms of student’s needs, integrated writing is necessary.
Writing is one of the important skills in teaching English. It has
always occupied place in most English language course. One of the reasons is
that more and more people need to learn writing in English for occupational
or academic purpose. To write well, people must have good capabilities in
writing. More ever, someone who wants to write the essay or story must know

the steps in writing process and aspects of writing. The writer must be able to
organize the ideas to construct the sentences, to use punctuation and spelling
well. Besides, they must be able to arrange the writing into cohesive and
coherent paragraphs and text.

Teaching method are needed in teaching – learning process, especially
in teaching writing. Methods is treated at the level of design in which the roles
of teachers learners and instructional materials are specified. The method is
theoretically related to an approach and is organizationally determined by
design ( Fauziati, 2001:5 ). Writing takes time and energy. It’s a long process.
The students usually get difficulties in starting their writing. That will cause
many students waste valuable time just for getting started. So it needs to use
appropriate method in teaching writing, in order to produce good writing. The
writer is interested in having study on the method of teaching writing applied
by the English teacher at SMA Muhammadiyah 2 Gemolong because this
school is a famous school in Gemolong. In edition, realizing that most of the
students usually get difficulties in starting their writing, the writer wants to
know the method in teaching writing.

Based on the background above, the writer decides to carry out a
research entitled " A DESCRIPTIVE STUDY ON THE METHOD OF
TEACHING WRITING AND PROBLEM FACED BY THE STUDENTS AT
SMA MUHAMMADIYAH 2 GEMOLONG ".

B. Previous Study
The previous study is done by Yuniawati ( 2002 ) who conducted a
research entitled “ Grammatical Error in Writing Made by the Third Semester

Students of the English Department of the Teacher Training and Education
Faculty of Sebelas Maret University in 2001 / 2002 Academic Year “. Her
conclusion is that the third semester student of English Department of the
Teacher Training and Education Faculty of 11 Maret University still find
difficulties in constructing well – formed sentences.
The second previous study is done by Fitria Wulansari ( 2003 ) who
conducted a research entitled “ A Descriptive Study on the technique of
Teaching Writing Applied by the Teacher at SMA Negeri Kebakkramat in
2006 / 2007 Academic year. Her conclusion is that the objectives of teaching

writing at SMA Negeri Kebakkramat are to improve the writing competence
of the students, prepare the students to face the national examination. In
Indonesia it is called UAN and prepares the students to continue their study to
University.
Next, the previous research is “ English Teaching Learning at the
Sixth Year of SDN Gumpang I Surakarta By Hanifah Nur Rakhmawati ( 2004
). The result of her study is that the goals of the teaching are to introduce
English skill to continue to the higher level. It focused on listening, reading,
writing, speaking and vocabulary. The teacher uses text book and picture as
the material to support the activity in the classroom. The teacher has roles as a
manager, facilitator, consultant or a counselor, instructor and evaluator. The
classroom procedures consist of three parts namely engage, study and
activate. She uses observation and interview as the technique of collecting
data and she also analyses by using the descriptive qualitative method.

Last, the previous study is done by Ratna Sari ( 2001 ) who conducted
a research entitled “ English Teaching – Learning Process at the First Year of
MTS Assalam Surakarta, An Educational Ethnography “. The result of her

study is that there are two objectives of teaching learning process at the first
year students of MTs Assalam Surakarta namely : General Instructional
Objective and Specific Instructional Objective. General Instructional
Objective of the teaching is based on the English Teaching Guideline of
Junior High School, it is the 2004 curriculum especially to the students of
Madrasah Tsanawiyah. Specific Instructional Objective is to use English for
communication. The teacher has roles as a manager, consultant, facilitator and
evaluator, a motivator and as an instructor. While the student’s are role as
subject not only the object, and as a negotiator. The classroom procedures are
teaching learning process in the classroom contains interaction between the
teacher and the students that can be seen in the activities in the classroom. She
uses observation and interview as the technique of collecting data and she also
analysis by using the descriptive qualitative method.
This research is different from the previous researches concerns with
the descriptive study of teaching writing to develop the writing skill. In this
research,the writer focuses on the method of teaching writing applied by the
teacher and problems faced by the students at SMA Muhammadiyah 2
Gemolong.
C. Problem Statement
The research concerns with the following problem statement :

What are the method used by the English teacher in Teaching Writing at
SMA Muhammadiyah 2 Gemolong?

2.

What problems faced by the students in learning writing at SMA
Muhammadiyah 2 Gemolong?

D. Objective of the Study
The writer has two objectives in this research. They are:
1.

To know the method used by English teacher in Teaching Writing at
SMA Muhammadiyah 2 Gemolong.

To know the problems faced by the students in learning writing at SMA
Muhammadiyah 2 Gemolong?

E. Benefit of the Study
The result of the study will have theoretical benefits and practical
benefits.

Theoritically
a.

The result of the research can be used as an input in the instruction
of teaching writing.

b.

The result of this research can be used as the reference for those
who want to conduct a research of English teaching learning

process.

Practically
The result of this research will be helpful both for students and
teacher to reduce the problems in teaching and learning English in
writing.

F. Research Paper Organization
To give a clear understanding of the study, the writer organizes these
chapters into several chapter.
Chapter I is Introduction that consists of background of the study,
previous study, problem statement, limitation of the study, objective of the
study, benefit of the study, and research paper organization.
Chapter II is Underlying Theory. It consist of notion of writing, the
process of writing, methods of teaching English, making writing interactive,
writing as process and product, problems in writing, the roles of teacher in

teaching writing, types of writing.
Chapter III is Research Method. It consists of type of research, place
and time of the research, subject and object of the study, source of data, data
collection method, and technique for analyzing data.
Chapter IV discusses the result of the research. It consists of research
finding and discussion.
Chapter V is the last chapter. It consists of conclusion and suggestion.
