Festival Brings Musicians and Fans to Austin, Texas
March 16, 2014
Greg Flakus
Austin, Texas is known as the “Live Music Capital of the World,” and that
reputation is enhanced each year during the South by Southwest Festival. The event,
which started in 1987, has grown larger each year and this year offered more than
2,000 showcase performances at venues all over the city.
Most musicians come here looking for exposure. If they cannot get it inside a
venue, they will go out on the street.
There is always music being played on Austin's Sixth Street, with all of its clubs
and bars, but during South by Southwest there is even more of it and it comes from
all over the world.
There are bands here from all over America and from as far away as Japan,
South Korea and Azerbaijan.
Thousands of fans have poured into Austin to hear them play.
Joy Wave, an Indie Rock band from Rochester, New York, played at a venue
sponsored by Spotify, an online streaming music service favored by young music
fans. Bass player John Donnally and singer Daniel Armbruster are confident that
their band will stand out.
“There is none like ours,” said Donnally. “It is also not a competition. I think
Spotify, like all music, is instantly accessible forever, so everyone can listen to as
much music as they want to,” added Armbruster.
But many musicians are clearly here hoping for a big break, an idea summed up
in a song by New York-based comedic songwriter Jessica Delfino. “I do not know
what to do with my life, but I really, really, really want to be famous,” said Delfino.
Among the local singer/songwriters who already has a well-established fan base
is Eliza Gilkyson.
Her new CD, released during the South by Southwest Festival, displays a style
of self- expression that has become a model for many younger female singers.
“When you strip something down to you and a guitar, there is going to be
something timeless about that that is the same through the ages,” said Gilkyson.
25
Universitas Sumatera Utara
Growing up in Los Angeles, Gilkyson's first musical impressions came from her
songwriting father, Terry Gilkyson, who penned many hits and also sang in a folk
group.
“His music was around me all the time and he loved sort of dark melodies and he
really was a master song constructor,” she said.
On her new CD, she included one of his songs - Fast Freight.
Eliza Gilkyson keeps playing concerts and selling CDs with her masterful
performance of songs that appeal to both the heart and the intellect.

Indonesian Officials Crackdown on Child Political Campaigners
Fatiyah Wardah
March 17, 2014
The Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI) says it has found that
nearly a dozen political parties violated campaign rules by involving children during
the first day of legislative campaigning Sunday.
According to KPAI's campaign monitoring team, most of the public complaints
have been directed at the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS).
KPAI chairman Asrorun Ni'am said this finding would be coordinated with the
Election Supervisory Body for further action.
"Anyone who abuses children for political activities is liable to face up to five
years imprisonment and/or a fine of up to [$50,000]," he said.
But PKS member Zulhermansyah defends his party, saying it has not involved
children as campaign participants.
“The reason parents bring their children to campaigns is because they don‟t have
a sitter to take care of them," he said. "It‟s difficult to let them stay at home. It‟s not
like the old days where there are riots in the campaigns."
Indonesian parliamentary elections are scheduled for April 9. The presidential
election will follow three months later on July 9.

Active MRI Shows How Joints Work
March 18, 2014
George Putic
Since its introduction in the 1980s, magnetic resonance imaging machines,
commonly known as MRI scanners, have become a highly valuable tool in diagnostic
medicine. Researchers in California now say they have developed a new method that
enables them to see moving images of body joints.
With the MRI scanner, the part of the patient‟s body that needs to be observed is
exposed to a very strong magnetic field which excites hydrogen atoms in its tissues.
Different tissues emit different radio frequencies which a computer turns into
images. For the image to be as clear as possible, the patient has to lie perfectly still.
Researchers at the University of California Davis developed a procedure for
getting moving images of body parts, like joints.
Professor Robert Boutin, who leads the research team, says the procedure called
„Active MRI‟, captures multiple images per second. Those images, he says, will help
doctors analyze the mechanics of the patient's joint before and after the surgery.
“One thing that is important is that we can personalize the exam to address what
is causing symptoms to the patient, rather than doing the same thing for everyone,"
Boutin said.
As one observed patient moves his wrist, one of the most complicated joints in a
human body, the image clearly shows the interaction of all the parts involved.
The new procedure has already helped him find out what is causing problems for
his patients, said orthopaedic surgeon Robert Szabo.
“We can understand why one person develops an unstable wrist, why one person
has pain and wears out the joint surface in one area of the wrist and what we can do
to replace, make better products over even make soft tissue corrections to improve
that patients life.”
Boutin said „Active MRI‟ will also help doctors better understand all other
moving parts of the body.
“I think that it could and should be applied to every other joint in the body, not
only other joints, but muscles and tendons," he said. "We are built to move and I
think that MR imaging should reflect that.”
Doctors say they expect further improvements in the new technology that could
also help make better prosthetics for amputees.

General Motors Recalls Another 1.5 Million Vehicles for Repairs
March 18, 2014
VOA News
The biggest U.S. automaker, General Motors, is recalling another 1.5 million
vehicles for repairs, pushing the company's recall total to more than 3 million in the
last month.
In a video message to GM workers, chief executive Mary Barra vowed to change
the company culture and deal quicker with auto manufacturing defects. The latest
recall involves concerns about brakes, seat belts and air bags on several recent
models, including sport utility vehicles, vans and top-of-the-line Cadillac sedans.
GM, the world's second biggest automaker behind Japan's Toyota Motors,
recalled 1.6 million older models in February for defectiveignition switches that shut
down vehicles while
they were being driven, disabling the airbags.
GM has linked the ignition switch defect to 12 deaths in crashes, while a
Washington auto safety group alleges that more than 300 people have been killed in
accidents because of the problem. GM knew of the ignition switch problem as far
back as 2001, and Barra says that company delays in dealing with the problem are
unacceptable.
"Something went wrong with our process in this instance and terrible things
happened."
She said GM "will be better because of this tragic situation if we seize the
opportunity" to deal with manufacturing problems as they are discovered.
General Motors said it expects to spend about $300 million in the first quarter
this year to make repairs on all the recalled vehicles.
