Introduction
Lumbar disc herniation is a displacement of disc materialbeyond the intervertebral disc
space.Treatment decision making for patients with herniated discs can be challenging.
Nonoperative treatments can beeffective in most cases. Others have indicated that surgery
leads to superior results, especially in short-term painrelief.
Case Presentation
We report on six patients with lumbar disc herniation who had microscopic
decompression without posterior instrumentation for lumbar disc herniation at Sanglah
General Hospital Denpasar Bali, between April 2014 and August 2014.
Discussion
The age of range from 29 year old to 65 year old. There were 1 female (16,67 %) and 5

males (83,33 %).The L4/ L5 level was herniation in 5/6 patients (83,33%), L3/L4 in 1/6
(16,67%), L5/S1 in 2/6 (33,33%), L2/L3 in 1/6 (16,67%), L3/L4 in 1/6 (16,67%). We have
evaluated theresults for about 3months.The patients were interviewed and asked to comment
on their back pain and walking ability pre-operatively and postoperative period, and The JOA
Back Pain Evaluation Questionnaire were used.In this study, the improvement of back pain
was satisfactory, according to the improvement of the pretreatment score and posttreatment
score that increase by 20 points.
Conclusion
This study has shown that microscopic decompressionwith preservation of the posterior
tension band of spine is a safe procedure withlow rate of secondary instability. There is a
high incidence of excellent or goodresults. Surgery enables these patients to have a better
quality of life, better social life function, and better walking ability.
