INI'RODUCTIoN

English as lingua franca is totally needed fbr
one who wants to be ihe citizen of the world and
to be success both academically and professionally
not only within the country but alscl world-wide.

Therefore, English is also taught in lndonesia as
one the foreign language (EFL) subjecf in fornal
.schools starrs from the Junior High School fo rhe
Higher lnsdnrdon. State Polytechnic of padang
(PNP) as oRe of the higher insrjtutjon in padang,
West Sumatera, lndonesia rakes English among
other subjectq taught as the eompql.5gry onq as

well. The shrdents learn it since their fiesh year ro
the last year of their shrdy. The institution puts
,some expecfaJiurs for it.s gradu{e shrdents that
th"y are not only competent in their own
background's major but also proficient enough in
conrmunicating with foreigners by using English.

As a matter of fact. there are some students to
mention who still feel that they are not fluent in
communicating witlr English. It is perhaps eitlter
the lack of their self-confielent due to their limitEel
knowledge and pracrice or initially blocks
thelrrselves from learning. Clommonly rhey say
that English is a difficult lesson to be learned.

Neverthclcss, there is a few of them who is
capable or can be said tluent spoken and written in
English even though it is limited in numbers.

Despite the lack


of

qualified and advanced

language laboratory, intemationally high qualiflred
books ofEnglish lesson, cannot be the r€asons for
these students to not learning it,crEativ,ply. There
are many other sources that they,,ican,find fiorn,,out
of the class environment such as from tlae ;internet,
television programs, etc.

Indced, it is such a complex matter of leaming
in an insritution as it involves other
stakeholders: the in.stitution, tfie lecturers and the
