Our first day of On the Job Training at Department of Public Works and Highways
particular at maintenance section is a great experience. At first we introduced ourselves
at the section and next are they discussed us about the department order 13. The DO13
is the guideline of the section on to they must perform or the task they need to
accomplished within the given period of time. The next day they discussed us about the
bluebook that DPWH use as manual, all the works of the department is written on their
bluebook. Our first field at baluarte Santiago city, we checked cross drainage that need
repair, after that they taught us about gabions and mattresses and we performed
assistic survey at rizal Santiago city. Next day we sketch the data we gathered from the
survey and let us estimate the materials that will be used in the certain project. The
maintenance section maintain the quality of the finish product of the department, like
repairing damage road and other property of DPWH.
Our next destination is at Quality Assurance section our first day at the section
we introduced our selves and we stayed at the laboratory to witness some quality
control activities, and they let us perform several test that is done inside and outside the
laboratory like compaction test, wash test, sieve analysis, California bearing ratio and
field density test. Performing those test really help us understand more the importance
of testing materials before it is being use in the construction because it may cause poor
quality of output and it may cause risk to people. The material should pass the standard
that DPWH require in order to use a material in a certain project. We always perform
compaction test which is needed before performing field density test because we need
to know first the maximum dry density and the optimum moisture content of the sample
that is taken from the site, and after that we can already perform FDT in the compacted
area which where the PPCP will pour, it should have higher percentage in order pass
the standard. We experience those test at Laboratory and at field at rizal Santiago city.
Our last day at QAS we take exams after we leave the section.
The 3rd section that we went was at the construction section this is where the projects
are monitored by the engineers at the site, we experience visiting site like road opening,
road widening and other projects. In this section they are checking if the making of a
certain project is done in process, because other workers do not perform the proper
step on how to do thing so they need to monitor it in order to have a good output. We
also witness the making of stone masonry at loag, jones.
Our last destination is at Planning and Design section. Our first day was on field
at Jones. We finish the ROCOND at that day until at the boundary between 4 th district
and quirino district. Tomorrow after that day we solved the data that we gathered like
transverse cracks, longitudinal cracks, shuttered slab, potholes, scaling and more
defects of the carriage way. We also perform survey at Daang Maharlika in front of
Robinson’s place for the widening and construction of line canal. In this section is where
all the projects are being made. They plan for it and they estimate the cost that they will
use in a certain project.
