CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION

1.1Background to the Topic

A title plays an important role to an article. It is commonly the first thing that is seen by a reader. A title has to represent information of the content in an article.

In this report, it will be discussed about how the title in the article as one of referring expression has complex proposition. The complexities make reader difficult to understand the information in the title. The failure to interpret proposition can make miss interpretation, so it makes language does not carry out its function well.

Therefore, I think it is important to share how information is formed using proposition so the difficulties to understand the information can be avoided. Proposition can be understood as in following:

A sentence contains certain information, but the same information can be presented in different sentences and in parts of sentences; the information presented, apart from the way it is presented, is called a proposition.” (Kreidler, 2002:62)

According to Charles theory, proposition is a different way to say the same information. The information will be clearer if it has a lot of way to say. By seeing this case, I am interested in discussing about how proposition has a role in a process of making information. I will focus in how proposition is made and how the propositions relate to one another in a referring expression. According to this case, the title for the research report is “The Analysis of Proposition to

(7)

Understand the Titles of the Article in Journal of Engineering and Technological Sciences ITB”.

1.2Scope

This paper analyzes the proposition in the title of the article in Journal of Engineering and Technological Sciences of ITB. In this paper, I attempt to deliver a discussion about how a proposition is made in order to understand a title.

1.3Objectives

Other than to fulfill the job training course, the purpose of this paper is as in the following:

1. To chop out the propositions of the titles in the articles. 2. To describe the relations among the propositions in the titles.

1.4Significant to Knowledge

The paper is expected to have significant benefit, whether it is a theoretically or practically. Theoretically, it is expected to give knowledge about the proposition to reader in terms of how a proposition is made. The paper indicates that by knowing the propositions in particular referring expression may help the readers to have better understanding about the referring expressions. Practically, it is expected to give understanding about proposition to reader in how a proposition is made.

(8)

1.5The Framework of the Theory

In this job training report, I use Charles W. Kreidler’s theory of proposition.

A sentence contains certain information, but the same information can be presented in different sentences and in parts of sentences; the information presented, apart from the way it is presented, is called a proposition.” (Kreidler, 2002:62)

“Proposition contains one predicate and a varying number of referring expressions (noun phrase) called arguments, like a window, Albert. The predicate may be a verb, an adjective, a preposition, or a noun phrase.” (Kreidler, 2002:66)

According to the theory, proposition is the way to deliver information and it can be concluded that proposition is made by one predicate through paraphrasing the concepts existed in the referring expressions.

1.6Research Method

The method that is used to analyze the data in this job training report is descriptive method; the data is collected and analyzed based on the theory.

1.7Place and Time

I did the job training in LPPM ITB, located at Jl. Tamansari 64 Bandung. The timing of the job training began on 16 July until 6 September 2013, within approximately 34 days. It began on weekdays, starting at 08.00 A.M until 04.30 P.M.

In LPPM ITB, I was placed at Facilities and Infrastructure Division and at Information System Division. At Facilities and Infrastructure Division, I worked

(9)

as a staff that inputted the document data. Whereas at Information System Divisions, I worked as a staff that inputted research journals and editted some journals regarding their writings and structures and I had the responsibility to upload the journals to be linked to the web.

CHAPTER III

THE DESCRIPTION OF THE TOPIC

3.1 Propositions

Proposition can be understood as follow:

A sentence contains certain information, but the same information can be presented in different sentences and in parts of sentences; the information presented, apart from the way it is presented, is called a proposition.” (Kreidler, 2002:62)

The quote above shows an understanding that proposition is the way to deliver information. Furthermore, proposition can show relation between one proposition and other propositions in a sentence.

As a way to deliver information, proposition has an important role to show relation between one proposition and other proposition in a sentence. Proposition can be an easy way to understand an information or a message in a sentence for readers. However, proposition is not only in a sentence, it can be in a phrase or argument, as Kreidler said (2002:66)

“Proposition contains one predicate and a varying number of referring expressions (noun phrase) called arguments, like a window, Albert. The predicate may be a verb, an adjective, a preposition, or a noun phrase.”

From the quote above, it can be understood that proposition is formed by one predicate. So the referring expression as it is said in the quote can have proposition by showing the predicate through paraphrasing the concepts existed in the referring expressions. In this case, I will focus on showing the proposition in the titles of the article in Journal of Engineering and Technological Sciences ITB.

(15)

3.2 Data Analysis

Here are the lists of the titles in the article that are found in Journal of Engineering and Technological Sciences of ITB:
