CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of study

Literature is a kind of imaginative writing. It reflects a problem of life done by human being. This reflection gives reality of life as what happens to man; whether, it is sad or happy problem of life. This writing is truly a part of man’s life or the summary of man’s life. Imagination is inspired from thinking of something which relates for life, nature, and fantasy. It can be restrained as one please. Terri Eagleton (1983:1) states that “ there have been various attempts to define literarture. You can define it, for example, as “imaginative” writing in the sense of fiction-writing which is not really true. But even the briefest reflection on what people commonly include under the heading of literature suggests that this will do”. The literature as imaginative writing not really true because sometimes it lifted up from someone’s imagination or dream. A distinction between ‘fact’ and ‘fiction’, then , seems unlikely to get us very far, not least because the distinction itself is often questionable one.

Literature has many works, one of them is novel. Novel is a length story that narates the life experience. Novel has extrinsic and intrinsic elements. Extrinsic elements in a novel relates to psycologi, history and sociologyon the other way, intrinsic elements in a novel does’t relate to other reference only study of novel itself. In this paper, the writer interested to analyze a novel which entitled The Earl’s Secret novel by Terri Brisbin. The Earl Secret is a good novel to read because not only contains is social value in the story, has so many

(14)

characters, and events that contents conflict but also the theme of this novel is about love. As we know, love always become the most interesting topic to discuss. In this paper the writer would like to analyze the intrinsic of the Earl’s Secret novel. Because the intrinsic elements are found in this novel so, because it novel is nothing. Such as the theme as the central idea in a novel. Characters is human being that plays actions in a novel. Setting is the place and time in a novel. Plot is sequence of events that content conflict in a novel. All of them are especially in a novel; it makes the writer interested to analyze because without the intrinsic elements, novel can not be written.

In this paper, the writer choses thenovel entitled The Earl’s Secrret By Terri Brisbin because the intrinsic elements of the novel are solid and support each others.

Finaly, the writer decided to write this paper entitled THE INTRINSIC ANALISYS IN TERRI BRISBIN’S NOVEL THE EARLS SECRET.

1.2 Problem of study

The problem of this study are:

1. What is the theme of this novel?

2. How the plot development of this novel ?

3. What and who are the characters of the player of the novel?

1.3 Objective of study

(15)

1. To describe the theme of the novel. Finding the idea and analyze it in The Earl’s Secret by Terri Brisbin’s novel.

2. To describe the plot of the novel. The writer shows the sequence of events that contents conflict, then presents it in the right order.

3. To describe the characters of the novel. The writer describes the character who play in a novel for example, the back ground of the character, and the role of character, the characteristic of character and activities of character.

1.4 Scope of Study

Novel as imaginative writing has so many interesting parts to elaborate. Not only intrinsic elements but also we can analyze the extrinsic elements of the novel. So, when we want to analyze the parts of novel, we need to choose the topic between intrinsic or extrinsic elements. And the most necessary is we need to make the limitation of the topic. The limitation is not only useful to make clear, brief and the accurate of our explanation and the analysis but also avoid confusion of readers in understanding the analysis and acquire good result.

Actually novel consist of many intrinsic elements. There are theme, plot, setting, character, point of view style, tone and others. But in this paper the writer focused only three parts of it. The writer will only concentrate to analyze the theme of the novel, The plot and also who and what is the characterization in this novel. In addition, the writer limit the analysis of intrinsic elements in The Earl’s Secret by Terri Brisbin’s novel.

(16)

1.5 Significance of study

The significances in this paper are:

1. Theoretically, the significance of this study is the reader will understand about intrinsic elements in a novel as literary work in addition to add study of literature of a novel particularly about intrinsic elements.

2. Practically, the study can be used as reference for learning and understanding about intrinsic elements in a novel besides to give contribution to some study of literature to readers through this paper.

1.6 Method of study

Writing this paper needed some data which relevant to the paper. Without data in writing paper is going to be difficult to finish moreover it is going to be error. To complete this paper the author applies two methods to collect the data, they are library research and internet. Method of library research for finding data is collect some book which relevant with the analysis of this paper and copy part of material in the book to be reference.

The method of study, the writer uses descriptive qualitative technique to write this paper. The writer collects the quotations of the novel and selects the quotations which contents events. The quotation is interpreted and analyzed, from the analysis takes the conclusion.

CHAPTER II

REVIEW AND RELATED LITERATURE

2.1 What is novel?

Novel is a story which tells about someone life. Novels do not, however, present a documentary picture of life. Along side the fact that novels look at people in society, the other major characteristic of the genre is that novels tell a story. In fact, novels tend to tell the some few stories time and time.

The source or the inspiration of writing novel can be a based on true story. Their true story re-telling in a story that we call as life experience. This true story more reliable than the other one that which based on imagination. It is because the second one sometime could not happen in real life.

“Writers have, of course, always been interested in the world arround them, but the development of the novel reflects a move away froman essentially religious view of life towards a new interest in the complexities of everyday experience. Most of novels are concerned with ordinary people and their problems in the societies in which they find themselves” (John Peck and Martin Coyle, 1984:102)

Novel can be reflects of our daily living arround them. It could be easier because we just need to take from our daily activities and our experiences. Put the ordinary story and also tells about the ordinary person story’s. Lifted up from the social problems, economic also about culture.

“A lot of novels have young people as the main characters, for it is often the young who feel themselves to be most at odds with convenctional standards. You will have made considerable progress in understanding the particuar novel

(18)

you are reading if you can see how it sets certain individuals against society or their family.”( John Peck and Martin Coyle, 1984:102).

Do not, however make the mistake of believing that the novel is written to put across the point. Some novel are moralists . The message of their novels tells about the update reality in our society. Nowdays the novels not only tells about the young people love relationship but also the moral crisis, education and other social ife. But it would be so so simple to say that the important thing about their novel messages they pearch.

2.2 Intrinsic Elements

2.2.1 Theme

Theme or themes refers to the result of general and abstract thinking of a wrinting. In this part, idea become the general thinking of the novel. In literary study the consideration of themes relates to meaning ,interpretation, explanation, and significance. Though themes are usually extensive and complex, separate ideas may be named by a single word.

Theme as the delover part in a novel, must be related with the other elements to build a good story. As a necessary part in a novel, it is important to know clearly what is the theme. Because it just have a little bit different with an ordinary sentence.

“Although a single word may name an idea, it does not operate as an idea until it is put into a sentence or assertion. In other words, an idea needs a subject and

(19)

predicate before we can use it as a basis of understanding. It is important to recognize than an assertion of an idea is not the same as an ordinary sentence.” (Edgar V.Roberts & Henry E.Jacobs,1993:361)

We can say that a single word as an idea after we build it into a sentence. Which needed a subject, predicate and the other supporting parts like in an ordinary sentence. But we need to know deeper that eventhough both build on subject and prdicate, an idea is not the same as an ordinary sentence. We need to recognize the both parts by analizing the meaning of the sentence or the idea.

Without no consideration to analyze the sentences, it could be difficult to recognice which one of both. Ideas are presented along with the expression or implication that certain conditions and standards should be highly valued.

“All stories have a theme or purpose, no matter how deviously the author choses to present it. At one time authors stated their purpose, but such a procedure has become old-fashioned; no self-respecting writer at present will do more than imply this theme. He suggests it through character, atmoshere, setting, plot and style-thus theme is a kind of composite statement which requires our comprehension of numerous other elements.” (Hamalian and Karl, 1967:323)

To show the theme, the authour may tells by the other elements parts of the novel. There are character, atmosphere, setting, plot and style. It could be more intersting to concluting the theme if we recognize it.

Hamalian and Karl (1967:324) said that “Remember that theme hunting is possibly the most enjoyble, and rewarding, part of a short story, but it is also the most dangerous, the most open to wild error. If you want to find meaning, you must to put yourself in the writer’s hands and efface part of yoursel. Otherwise every story, regretabbly, will sound exactly like you. ”

(20)

We really challange to find the theme. But be careful it is enjoyable in the other hand, also dangerous. Because a little mistake will bring the story error and the reader can be confused. So we can imagine as the real author of the story to make easier us to find the meaning or the theme.

2.2.2 Plot

Plot is the arragement of whole conflict that found in a story. By this plot, we can tells the story briefly without lose any necessary part of the incidence. It is the easy way if we want to analyze the characters of the story.

It’s very important to know the information of the story first. We can start by who are the figure of the story, what happen, when, and where. We can not do anything without this essential data for the further step like in human life, those are become the breath.

“ Plot are made up mostly of actions or incidents that follow each other sequentially. Finding a sequential or

narrative order however, is only the only the first step

toward the more important consideration-the plot, or the control governing the development of the actions.” (Edgar V.Roberts and Henry E. Jacobs 1993:88)

To make a true arragement of the plot is a good method to make the readers understand the chennel of the story. When we make the random arrangement, it could be confusing the readers because the story is error. So, the right arrangement plot is the right one method.

“When we speak of the dramatic structure of a story, we refer to the exact way in which our emotional involvement in its plot is increased and relaxed. The first part of this dramatic structure is the exposition, which provides the reader with essential information-who, what, when,

(21)

where-he or she needs to know before continuing.” (R.S. GWYNN, 2002: 8)

It necessary thing to know who is the actor, but not oly limited just for her or his name but also the profession and the other important information. What happen, when , and where should be complete with the “who” above. Those are become the basic information that should we get from person. It is become a very necessary thing before we continue to next step because, we will understand clearly and would not confused in the further step.

Hamalian and Karl (1967:167) defines that “At one time in the development of the short story, plot predominated. Stories were often thought of as forms of pure entertainment, and one spoke of a good plot or a compelling plot. One read the story, often enough, for the plot ; and if the plot flagged, so did interest.”

The plot were often thought by the stories. It’s related one each other, good plot will produce a good story and both side. Plot can barely be identified; and although this may be a good thing for the development of the story, it is often frustrating for the reader.

2.2.3 Character

Character is the actors or actress who take take a part in the story. They are who play their own position as a protagonist or antagonist, and as the main character or the supporting character. The protagonist ussually plays as a good or

(22)

a kind character and could be the winner in the end of the story. The antagonist become the bad one and the loser. The main character become the central of the story and supporting character plays as who support the antagonist or be the protagonist character.

Gwynn (2003:11) says that “Every story hinges on the actions undertaken by its main character, or protagonist, a term drawn from crying anancient Greek tragedy (literally “first debater”) that is more useful in discussions of fiction than such misleading term as hero or heroine. Additionally, stories may contain an opposing character, or antagonist, with whom the protagonist is drawn into conflict”.

Character plays a great novel. By the character we could know the situation and condition the of the palyer. The character may be sad, happy, mad or etc. A character may be defined as a verbal representation of a human being.

Through what the characters do or feel, it could be bring the reader in the same situation by imagine if they really do the same or feel the same in real life when they read it. Being sad if the charcters sad and on both side.

“ Through action, speech, description, and commentary, authors potray characters who are worth caring about, rooting for, and even loving, although there are also characters you may laugh at, dislike, or even hate ” (Edgar V. Roberts, 1995: 131)

There are so many things that character show by their action. Sometime if the protagonist show a happy action, the the antagonist will mad and try to revenge. One laught, the other one cry. One cry, the other will happy and so on.

(23)

“Finally, character is of interest for the very personal reason that we want to see how the other people live, how they make a decision and react to responsibility, how they pursue their goals. Think of characters in stories and novels as real people, and than let your imagination go.”( Hamalian and Karl, 1967:238).

By study their character we could about their daily life or their culture. How they face a problem and to find the way out even the way they sleep and so on. In the other words, we could know about everything about them. Concern about this, the story will bring us to imagine them as ourselves in real life.

(24)

CHAPTER III

3.1 Its Theme

The beginning of this story David headed to Edinburg to overcome the problems. He disguising missions and his self as Mr. Archer. Finally he know that A.J Goodfellow is Anna Firchild. A.J Godfellow is her first name.

His father will not think Anna is suitable to be the wife of an earl, and even if this obstacle can be removed. David have to choose between two choices. First leave Anna and stay away as Treybourne or get out of the Treybourne and become Anna’s husbend. Finally David decide to choose Anna and leave the Treybourne.

(25)

3.2 Its Plot

The beginning of the story is in London at David’s room. David Lansdale, the Earl of Treybourne, has no choice but to travel to Scotland and face down his political reformist adversary who is employed by an old school friend. Writer A.J. Good fellow’s latest essay in "The Scottish Monthly Gazette" has mentioned him by name --he the spokesman for the Tory party in various political journals--and questions the politics and practices of the Tory party.

Treybourne has no choice but go to Scotland especially when his father the Marquees demands it. Though Treybourne does not really see eye to eye with his father's Tory politics, they have an arrangement: the Marquess will pay him a sum of money each year until he reaches his majority at thirty. Treyborne can not anger his father and risk having the funds cut off until the following year when he will receive the fortune that his grandfather left him. Unknown to the Marquess, Treybourne secretly uses the money his father gives him to fund various charities and causes dear to his heart. In his trip to Edinburgh, he disguising his self as Mr.David archer. When Treybourne arrives in Scotland to meet with his old friend and owner of the Gazette, he uses an assumed name in hopes that it will make his task easier.

Treybourne is immediately taken with the lovely Anna Fairchild, a close friend to the owner of the Gazette. Anna is a delightful distraction, beautiful, well-spoken, and a teacher in a school for women in service who have become pregnant and turned out without references. Yet Treybourne is in Scotland to persuade his old school friend to reveal A.J. Goodfellow's true identity so they can hammer out some sort of political truce that will please his father the Marquess.

(26)

He can not be distracted by Anna--yet he is and before he knows it, he loses his heart to her. His father will not think Anna is suitable to be the wife of an earl, and even if this obstacle can be removed.

David faced between two choices. Stay away as Treybourne and leave Anna or choses his second choices to get Anna as his wife and leave Treybourne. On the other hand, first Anna think that she must leave David because she did ot suitable as the wife of Treybourne. She also think that David will choose to stay away as the Treybourne. But in the end of this story, David leave the Treybourne to headed again to Edinburgh become Anna’s Husband.

3.3 Main Character

3.3.1 David Landsdale

In this chapter the writer will show the main characters that play important role in this novel. The main characters in this novel are David Lansdale and Anna Fairchild. The writer would like to analyze the aspects that found in David Lansdale, Anna Fairchild and Nathanael such as characteristics, habitual, and action.

David Lansdale is the Earl of Treybourne. Was not going to lose a public argument with a petty, scribbling journalist. So he headed for Edinburgh, disguising himself as plain Mr.Archer, eager to discover the anonymous writer.

Phisically David Lansdale look like his father Lord Treybourne. They have same short brown hair, have the same chiseled angels in their faces and same pale blue eyes ringed in midnight blue.

(27)

He looked at the man who fathered him and marveled that in spite of their close resembleancein appereance-same brown hair cut shorter than current style would dictate, same chiseled angels in their faces, same pale blue eyes ringed in midnight blue-their personalities and approach to honor and family were completely different. And when serving as the target of his father’s attempts to intimidate, he thanked the heavens above for the differences. (Brisbin’s The Earl’s Secret, 2007 P.10)

David is a handsome person. He has everyting the criterion as a perfect man. Phisically he look like his father but they have a different point of view about life. It’s only about money as his father thought, but it has own reason to live. That is love, david thought.

Acknowledging silently that yes, Mr.Archer was indeed a handsome and dashing figure of a man, she turned her gaze on the girl. “Isn’t he, becky. The correct from is isn’t he.” (Brisbin’s The Earl’s Secret, 2007 P.84)

David is a moody person. Especially when he has a problem or thinking about something, he really did not want to be disturbed of anyone. He will took a time to be alone without no one could bother him. Hate crowded and noisy at that time. Leave his alone and let him enjoy his solitary moment is the right answer.

“No visitors.” Berkley, the consummate butle, approached the mess of papers David had made of his desk and the sorrouounding area of floor, and bent to pick them up.“Leave them, Berkley. It is more important than you keep everyone out...” (Brisbin’s The Earl’s Secret, 2007 P.8)

David really hate it while he was discussing about something seriuous or talking about private topic with someone disturbed by voices or anyone. He want the conversation just consist of two person or just only consist of peoples who wound in that problem.

(28)

“ Forced on me, rather” David interrupted. In private he could admit that being the spokesman for the Tory Party’s position in this war of words had not been his choice. (Brisbin’s The Earl’s Secret, 2007 P.10)

David has a dark side. Sometime when they were discussing for something serious thing, david did not paying attention. He impolite to did not answer immediately. He was cognizant that the man will point out another fault of his if he has a fault first.

“You are not paying attention, Treybourne, another of your weakneses. How do you expect to quash this opponent and make it clear that his party is seeking that which will mine the good of the nation?”David did not answer immediately, he was cognizant that his father would point out another fault of his (Brisbin’s The Earl’s Secret, 2007 P.10)

David often berated by his father over the role as party spokesman. In truth, his father he only did it for the money it brought to him. And for what he could do with those funds. Projects which were too important to let that animosity between father and son interfere.

“ What answer would you like from me, sir? If you do not fell that I can accomplish your aims, then give this honor to someone else in whom you have confidence. This was not new ground for them. Every time his father berated him over this role as party spokesman, he asked to be relieved of it. (Brisbin’s The Earl’s Secret, 2007 P.11)

David was an obedient man. Eventhough his father always berated him every time over the role in his position as party spokesman, But he kept trust in him out of a few people in his life. And hiding to get out of the way admission of his weakneses.

(29)

He could continue to dissemble to avoid the admission of his weakneses, but Anthony was one of few people in the world whom he could trust (P 26).

In working or doing for something, david is a precise person. He always took a time to for recheck his own work. So he will get something better from what he have done.

“I ussually take a day or two to mull over the newest article before writing my own, sir,”.he offered as he turned back and met his father’s steely gaze. (Brisbin’s The Earl’s Secret, 2007 P. 12)

David is a famous person and widely known in english society. He was the subect of much discussion. From economics topics until politics. It’s look like in a film, he was the main artist. It will be the arguments in his essay about the assumtion of his father.

Though he knew he was the subject of much discussion among the best of english society, David also relized it was more about his income per annum and the titles he would assumeat his father’s death than the arguments in his essays. (Brisbin’s The Earl’s Secret, 2007 P.13)

David has own method to slip away from every topic of difficult situation. Beside his study room where he can hide his every problems as the settle place to shelter, he will try to looking for a place out of noisy and crowded. Slip away for a moment and than try to solve it. That was his own way to kill all of it.

David tried to make his way to the edge of the ballroom where there appeared to be more room to move... and to escape this crush. His third ball this week, this one was no less crowded, heated or unpleasant. But it was a somewhat safe escape from the topic of predicament. (Brisbin’s The Earl’s Secret, 2007 P. 23)

(30)

His father has a problem when a writer began making a mess of his father’s political plans and also himself by who known as Mr.Goodfellow. His father forced him to go to Edinburgh. David decided to obey his father and headed to Edinburgh. He began to thereating to take action, he seeking the help to cool the fires before they got out of control.

His essays were firmly trouncing the heir to his titles, his wealth, his position, but most to his honor and reputation (Brisbin’s The Earl’s Secret, 2007 P.257)

At the first time, he was confused about his decision. He think that he have no relations to meet there. But finally he remembered of someone. He dicided to meet his old friend when he was at school. He was Nathanael. He was the owned of the Scottish Monthly Gazette. Hopefully Nathanael could help him out of that difficult situation.

Now, David would use his own connections-his school friend owned and published the Scottish Monthly Gazette and would surely be able, but David was certain that it would be take more convincing on his part for his friend to reveal the information (Brisbin’s The Earl’s Secret, 2007 P. 27)

In his journey in Edinburgh he meet with Miss Fairchild who is Anna. At the first sight he meet her he had fallen when presented by her older sister. He never expected that anna wiilling to accompany him to journey arround edinburgh. It was impressed him.

His heart had fallen to the pieces at the sight of this girl when presented by her older sister.Of all the possiblities, David never expected this when Miss Fairchild promised as companion for their morning jaunt (Brisbin’s The Earl’s Secret, 2007 P.75)

(31)

When Anna accompanied him on a journey in Edinburgh, David remembered of someone who passed away few years ago. Someone who who had carried out a big changes in his life and his mother’s life. He did not compered how much he had missed her sister, Amelia. The death of Amelia has changed his life. His mother’s outlook, and his own behaviour. When he saw anna, he remembered of amelia.

Although much younger than he and separated by their years and gender, he had a great tenderness for her and followed her activities and growth with interest. Her death had been the catalyst for so many family changes, not the least of which was his mother’s outlook and behaviour and his own (Brisbin’s The Earl’s Secret, 2007 P.76)

After a few days in Edinburgh, finally ann knew what was his real plans came there. She told by her friend,Clarinda. Finally David confessed his real plans after Anna asked about the news that she heard from Clarinda. He Told Anna that he was Lord Treybourne.

“ Yes. My plan was to come here, discuss how best to handle the escalation my fatherwas demanding and to discover, If I could the identity of Mr.Goodfellow.Instead, upon my arrival, I was accosted by some mere woman who tried to pray my business out of me. Offended but intrigued, Itried to irritateher enaugh to stay away, however she was so different from the women that I, Lord Treybourne, meet and socialize with that she drew me to her ” (Brisbin’s The Earl’s Secret, 2007 P.251)

How would she have continued without her? Her heart broke over even the contemplation of a loss such as Mr.Archer’s. (Brisbin’s The Earl’s Secret, 2007 P. 74)

Anna is teacher in Edinburgh. She has a great skill in writing and editing. In her leisure time, she also work as a writer and editor in Scottish Monthly Gazette with her friend Nathanael. It’s about thirty minutes from her house in her usual journey. She has a big ambition with her job as a writer and editor. With the promising returns on her investment in the publication, she hoped to buy a second house and to expand her work.

(33)

“Although it is not widely known, Trey, Miss Fairchild helps me with some of the articles in the Gazette. She is a teacher an has a great skills in writing and editing” (Brisbin’s The Earl’s Secret, 2007 P.35).

As a teacher, Ann has a good attitudes and trustworthy. It makes everybody feel comfort of the way she speak. Everybody will listen to her because of her experience and expertise. At shcool, she loves her profession as a teacher and her students also love her as their teacher.

She has a harsh life since the death of her parents. She always study and tried to find a new skills hopefully will get a better opportunity for a job. Because she knew that education was the way out of poverty. The house where they live is too small since they live together with her mother’s sister and her dear aunt Euphemia. So, she planned to a buy new and bigger house.

That time was a time away from the harsh life they’d lived and a time to learn new skills that would, hopefully, give them a better opportunity for employment.Confirmed bluestocking that she was, Anna knew that education was the way out of poverty (Brisbin’s The Earl’s Secret, 2007 P.54)

Anna is a care person. Not only for julia her sister, for her dear aunt euphemia and for her students at school but also for every people in her life. She use her intelligence, toughtful and her wisdom to help everybody who need her. She was thinking that she live for others.

(34)

Anna is an a sensitive person in helping people. If she saw someone needed help, she imagine that the person was her parents or her sister. Anna is like an helper angel. She always ready to help every people as she could. No matter the time or condition. She was too sensitive for helping people.

“ Molly said she went to Lochlend Close to meet with a girl who might need help” A pregnant girl, in her words (Brisbin’s The Earl’s Secret, 2007 P.206)

Shes a dark side like wrong headed, indifferent and she don’t care about womefor people judge’s. She think that she is the right one. When her friend Nathanael, who also her workmate asking about marriage, She said that she is not seeking. She has a different poit of view about it. When every woman who has the same age with her looking for a husband, she didn’t. She is too ambitious for work and not yet give her time to looking for a man who will be her husband. Actually it’s not too bad because she has own reason for that. It’s since the death of her parents, she have to offord her own life.

(35)

“There is no new ground to turn on that matter, Nahaniel you know that you and Clarinda are my dearest friends and held in the highest regard. Marriage, although desireable and necessary for most women my age, is something I simply am not seeking” (Brisbin’s The Earl’s Secret, 2007 P.18)

Anna is a stubborn person. But it’s not like others people dark side, the tendency is positive. She really stubborn when she want to help someone who need her help. She don’t care about the situation or such like the condition. She just think that the people have to help by her as soon as she could.

“ I told her no’ to go, but the lass can be stubborn when it involves one of gels. I am sure she wi’be back in scant bit.” (Brisbin’s The Earl’s Secret, 2007 P. 206)

Anna has a high totallity in working. She knew that Nathanael , her workmate loves her and offering for a marriage for several times. But she refuse it beside he is her friend, she also think that that it was not the right time to get marriage. She dicided not looking for a husband at the time and not interested in marriage until she reach all her dreams. To see julia her sister happy, was the first priority in her life.

From the direction and attitude of their past conversations and from his own resources, David knew that she was not interesed in marriage and he would not offer anything less honorable to her. The incident in his past and its repercussions taught him at least that. He did not quench his physical needs without much farethought and caution. He would never again (Brisbin’s The Earl’s Secret, 2007 P.92)
