CHAPTER IV RESEARCH FINDINGS AND DISCUSSION

This chapter presents the research findings and then discusses those findings. The researcher discusses in order to obtain the answers of research questions which had been formulated in Chapter I. The researcher discusses the research findings one by one based on the order of research questions in Chapter 1. At the beginning of the first discussion discussing research question number 1, the researcher presents the finding of students’ achievement in defining and non- defining relative clauses test the researcher conducted. Also, to start the second discussion discussing research question number 2, the researcher provides the finding of students’ errors occurred in defining and non-defining relative clauses test the researcher conducted.

A. Students’ Mastery of Defining and Non-Defining Relative Clauses

Students’ mastery here means the result of students’ works in the test that the researcher conducted. In this research, it refers to mastery of defining and non- defining relative clauses by students of the English Language Education Study Program. The students here mean the fifth semester students of English Language Education Study Program, in academic year of 20092010. Based on the scores the students achieved in the test, the researcher knows the students’ mastery of defining and non-defining relative clauses. Their achievement here represents all the fifth semester students’ achievement. In order to describe their mastery of 51 defining and non-defining relative clauses clearly, the researcher provides Table 4 and Table 5 to show the students achievement. In the research, the researcher took 40 students of the fifth semester students of English Language Education Study Program, in academic year of 20092010 as the representative sample of the research. Those students represented all the fifth semester students of English Language Education Study Program, in academic year of 20092010. It means that their achievement in the test also represented all the fifth semester students’ mastery of defining and non- defining relative clauses. The achievement here was indicated by the total number of point obtained in the test. Table 4 below describes the students’ achievement in the test. Tabel 4. Students’ Achievement Number of Students as the Representative Sample Maximum Points in the Test Maximum Points for the Representative Sample Total Points the Representative Sample Obtained Percentage of Points the Representative Sample Obtained 40 60 2400 1681 70.04 Table 4 above describes the students’ achievement in the test. It has five columns. The first column is the number of students as the representative sample of the research. The second column is the maximum points in the test. The third column is the maximum points for the representative sample. It is obtained by multiplying the number of students in the representative sample by the maximum points in the test. It means 40 students were multiplied by 60 points. The fourth column is the total points the sample obtained. The last column is the percentage of points the sample obtained. It is obtained by dividing total points the sample 52 obtained by the maximum points for the representative sample then the result is multiplied by 100. It means 1681 points were divided by 2400 points, and then the result was multiplied by 100. Table 4 explains the students’ achievement. It presents mastery of defining and non-defining relative clauses by students of the English Language Education Study Program. The table shows that the sample of the research obtained 1681 points from 2400 points in the test given. It means that they achieved 70.04 of the required points or 7.00 scores. Based on the data in the list of students’ achievement See Appendix 11, the researcher computes the percentage of number of students in each level. The following table describes the percentage of number of students in each level. Table 5. The Percentage of Students’ Level Score Level Number of Students Percentage of Students’ Level 8.00 – 10.00 Very good A 9 22.50 7.00 – 7.99 Good B 14 35.00 5.60 – 6.99 Sufficient C 12 30.00 5.00 – 5.59 Insufficient D 3 7.50 0.00 – 4.99 Fail E 2 5.00 Note: The number of students is 40 The table shows the percentage of students’ level. Table 5 describes the percentage of number of students in each level. There are four columns on Table 5. The first column is the standard range of score in Sanata Dharma University. The second column is the level of each range of score. The students who obtain scores in the range 8.00 – 10.00 are in the level A which means very good. The students who obtain scores in the range 7.00 – 99 are in the level B which means good. The students who obtain scores in the range 5.60 – 6.99 are in the level C which means sufficient. The students who obtain score in the range 5.00 – 5.50 53 are in the level D which means insufficient. The students who obtain scores in the range 0.00 – 4.99 are in the level A which means very good. The third column is the number of students in each range or level. The last column is the percentage of number of students in level. It can be found by dividing the number of students in each level by 40 as the number of the representative sample, then multiplying the result by 100. Moreover, in Table 5 it can be seen that there were 9 students or 22.50 of 40 students belonging to level A or Very Good level. In level B or Good level, there were 14 students or 35.00 of 40 students. There were 12 students or 30.00 of 40 students who were in level C or Sufficient level and there were 3 students or 7.50 of 40 students in level D or Insufficient level. Unfortunately, there were still 2 students or 5 of 40 students in level E or Fail level. Thus, according to the standard score of Sanata Dharma University, the students have been categorized into “Good” with the range 70-79 or 7.00 – 7.99 scores. After discussing mastery of defining and non-defining relative clauses by students of the English Language Education Study Program, the researcher successfully discovered the answer of the first research question. The findings are that: 1. English Language Education Study Program students achieved 70.04 of the required points or 7.00 scores, and 2. According to the standard score of Sanata Dharma University, mastery of defining and non-defining relative clauses by students of the English 54 Language Education Study Program was categorized into “Good” with the range 70-79 or 7.00 – 7.99 scores.
