CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION
This chapter discusses about some sections dealing with introduction to this story, those are background of study, statement of problem, purpose of study,
significance of study, scope and limitation, and definition of key term. Each section is presented as follows.
1.1. Background of Study
Literature is one of important thing that people like to be discussed in their life. It presents or interprets facts, ideas or happenings; a describtion of a person or
place, the explanation of scientific process, the account of war, or the discussion of politycal issue. Therefore, human expression can be shown by using many ways
depends on the point of view. When people learn to read literature, people acquire a pleasure that never lose, but many people think that literature is something abstract to
learn and difficult to understand. The human’s expression sometimes can be shown
from the literary works. The literary works are drama, novel and poem. Koesnosoebroto 1988: 2 has stated that
, “Literature offers things in such a way as to refresh and encourage our own thinking, and so leads us to insights of our
own. ” It means that literature can give people opportunity to express their feeling in
their life. It describes the events and the things that can happen in a society, what human being has experienced in his life or it describes the reality. In discussing

literature, it should be pointed out that literature could not be separated from its social environment, in which a close relationship between literature and society appears as
the appreciation of the literary problem. In age of increasing electronic communication, the concept of film study is
suddenly expanded to become “screen education”, which includes the study of film, television, and various projected forms of mixed media.
The film is chosen as the subject of the thesis for some reasons. First, film gives people real entertainment whether from the act that includes a lot of talented
artists or from the background of the story that is supported by sound and visual effects that make the story look amazing. Second, mysteries and dramatic conflicts
that stated in it usually lead people to think what should happen in the last. Third, film gives people interesting scenarios, such as, life style, crime, state, beach,
building, and also mountain, the last every creative film writer will give them a different story that is always excited to see. Moreover, film is one of the literary
works. In relation to this study, the film with titl e “The Karate Kid” with the main
character is Dre Packer as American traveller to China who faced etiquette shocks in his life when he decided to move to China with his mother.
Considering the above background, a literary study with title “etiquette shock
faced by Dre Packer as American traveller to China in Harald Zwart film The Karate Kid
”, in which it has some lessons for the reader, especially about the etiquette shock is conducted. Culture is one of topic which the writer choosen for this thesis. Culture
can be defined as all the way of life include the arts, beliefs and intruction of population those are passed from generation to generation. Culture has been called

the way of life for an entry society such as, etiquette, language, dress, code of manner, religions, ritual, norm of behaviour, morality and system of belief

etiquette shocks which faced by Dre Packer as the main character of this film. The writer analyzed Dre Packer’s etiquette shocks when he moved to China because there
founded some problems who faced by Dre Packer in China especially about the etiquette shock in this film. Deep analysis is about all of the etiquette shocks faced by
Dre Packer as American traveller to China. The topic dicussion is chosen as the subject of thesis is about the etiquette
shocks. The etiquette is the conduct or procedure required by good breeding or prescribed by authority to be observed in social or official life. It also means the

So, the etiquette shock in “The Karate Kid” was choosen to be discussed.
1.2. Statement of Problem
