Abstract
One way to investigate how large the role of banking as a financial
institution by looking the position of time deposit.Time deposit of North Sumatera
during period of 1990-2003 in general show increase, just at the period gap in
1997-1998 had happened the fluctuation which high enough. This matter is
caused by the condition oflndonesia during this period where in monetary crisis.
The target of this research are to know how large inflation rate factor and
rate of interest influence the total of time deposit. Besides, the researcher was
expected the combination of time deposit as a dependent variable and inflation
rate and interest rate as an independent variables give picture how importance
both of independent variables in the growth of time deposit. This research
expected can be used as input to banking of North Sumatera especially to
determine the policy related to time deposit.
Based on research finding, that inflation and interest rate are able to
explain 96,5% the total of time deposit, while about 3,5% explained by other
variables. The rate of interest give real influence to the total of time deposit,
while inflation rate do not have an effect of reality to increase the total of time
deposit, partially. But if it tested collectively of equal obtained the value of
inflation rate and rate of interest have given real influence to the total of time
deposit. This matter have caused the value of money become decline, so that
make the society will make a priority to keep their money at bank on the basis of
obtained profit.It is important to know how it could be happened, the level of
