ABSTRACT
This dissertation is presented as a mean to understand the success of the society of the
Batak Toba tribe, using the indigenous psychology.
Through this research, it is hoped to enrich the knowledge of the unique behavior of the
distinct individuals of a tribe or culture, especially in Indonesia, specifically the Batak Toba tribe. It
was used as a contribution to the understanding of the multi-ethnic of Indonesian people.
Berry (1999), has emphasized that the created social psychology has to have originality in
our own reality. Every phenomenon has to be portrayed according to the context, laid out and
interpreted, relatively based on the culture and ecology where the phenomenon takes place.
The objective of this research was to study and understand how the values in the culture of
the Batak Toba tribe, which are hagabeon, hamoraon and hasangapon can build the
achievement motive, the power motive and the affiliation motive of the Batak Toba tribe, so
therefore, boost motivation to achieve success.
There are three main theories which were used as the mind frame of the
researchers, of which characteristic is flexible: the values theory by Triandis, Rokeach and
Schwartz, the motives theory by McClelland and the culture inheritance model theory of
Berry and Cavalli-Sforza.
The method used was the qualitative method, with focus group discussion, survey and case
study.
This research has found that the community system of dalihan na tolu is the affiliation
motive of the society of the Batak Toba tribe. Through this community, the terminal values and
instrumental values are founded. The terminal value, that is the aimed values, consists of
hagabeon, hamoraon and hasangapon. Hence, the instrumental values as the mode of conduct to
achieve the terminal values consists of religion, hamajuon, the law/patik dohot uhum, conflict
and guidance. The terminal values are the source of the power motive and the achievement motive
in the society of the Batak Toba tribe. These three motives are dynamically in collaboration to
determine the success of the society of the Batak Toba tribe.
The parent is the main role in internalizing the values, however, hula, bore, and dongan
tubu, are actively involved in transforming them in the daily life and specifically in the traditional
activities.

Disertasi ini diajukan sebagai upaya memahami keberhasilan masyarakat suku Batak Toba
dengan menggunakan pendekatan psikologi ulayat. Melalui penelitian ini diharapkan akan
memperkaya khasanah pengetahuan mengenai perilaku unik dari individu-individu khas suatu
budaya atau suku bangsa khususnya di Indonesia dalam hal ini suku Batak Toba. Hal ini diperlukan
sebagai kontribusi terhadap pemahaman tentang manusia Indonesia yang multi etnik.
Berry (1999), menegaskan bahwa psikologi sosial yang seyogyanya kita ciptakan harus
memiliki suatu keaslian dalam realitas kita sendiri. Setiap fenomen harus dipandang
menurut konteks, dipapar, dan ditafsirkan secara relatif berdasarkan situasi budaya dan ekologi,
tempat fenomen berlangsung.
Tujuan penelitian ini adalah menelaah dan memahami bagaimana nilai-nilai dalam
konteks budaya masyarakat suku Batak Toba, yaitu hagabeon, hamoraon dan hasangapon,
menumbuhkan the achievement motive, the power motive dan the affiliation motive bagi suku
tersebut yang kemudian memotivasinya bekerja keras mencapai keberhasilan.
Terdapat tiga teori utama yang menjadi kerangka berpikir peneliti yang bersifat fleksibel,
yaitu teori values menurut Triandis, Rokeach dan Schwartz, teori motives menurut
McClelland serta teori model pewarisan budaya menurut Berry dan Cavalli Sforza.
Metode yang digunakan adalah metode kualitatif dengan focus group discussion, survei
dan studi kasus.
Penelitian ini menemukan sistem kekerabatan dalihan na tolu sebagai the
affiliation motive masyarakat suku Batak Toba. Melalui sistem kekerabatan ini
ditanamkan terminal values dan instrumental values. Terminal values (nilai-nilai yang ingin
dicapai) terdiri dari hagabeon, hamoraon dan hasangapon. Sedangkan instrumental values sebagai
mode of conduct untuk mencapai terminal values terdiri dan religi, hamajuon, hukum patik
dohot uhum, konflik dan pengayoman. Terminal values adalah sumber dan the power motive dan
the achievement motive masyarakat suku Batak Toba. Ketiga motif ini berdinamika menentukan
keberhasilan masyarakat suku Batak Toba
Orang tua sebagai tokoh utama dalam menginternalisasikan nilai-nilai, namun hula-hula,
boru dan dongan tubu secara aktif ikut mentransformasikannya dalam kehidupan seharihari maupun secara khusus dalam kegiatan adat.
