Paper ini berjudul “ A Brief Study of Characterization of Sidney Sheldon’s Novel

The Sky is Falling. Novel merupakan salah satu prosa naratif yang berhubungan

dengan sifat – sifat manusia. Setiap novel berisi tentang kehidupan manusia. Berbagai alasan mengapa orang – orang sangat tertarik untuk membaca sebuah novel. Salah satunya adalah mereka tertarik dengan karakter tokoh yang muncul dan jalan cerita yang ditampilkan. Dari sini pembaca bisa mendapat pesan moral yang terkandung. Disini penulis mencoba menulis karakter – karakter tokoh utama dan tokoh pendukung dalam cerita ini. Dalam novel ini terdapat empat karakter utama yang terdiri atas Dana Evans, Jeff Connors, Roger Hudson dan Taylor Wintrop dan delapan belas karakter pendukung yaitu, Matt Baker,Elliot Cromwel,Abbe Lasman, Kemal , Paul, Julie, Rachel Stevens, Thomas Henry, Madeline, Victor Booster, Jack Stone, Pamela Hudson, Diefer Zarder, Vincent Manchino, Antonio Persico,Marcel Falcon,LeeHopkins, Sasha Shadnoff .Di sini penulis menggunakan metode perpustakaan. Penulis mencari buku yang berhubungan dengan novel yang memberikan penjelasan mengenai pengertian novel dan karakter.Penulis juga mencari informasi dari internet mengenai biografi dari pengarang novel tersebut.

1. INTRODUCTION

Background of the study

There are many reasons why people excited in reading a novel. One of the reasons is because of the characterization. Sometimes characterization in a novel can influence the readers after reading a novel. It can influence their attitude or even change their mind or on anything.

In this paper, the writer would like to study about characterization in Sidney Sheldon’s novel falling in the sky because this novel is full of ambition, passion, feelings, conflict, sadness and happiness.

Characterization is divided into four categories, namely : main character, peripheral character, protagonist and antagonist. The writer wants to study about these characterizations, because there are so many characters in this novel. It is full of conflicts and sturdiness. With such situation, the writer would like to describe about the characters.

Scope of the study

In writing this paper, the writer would like to concentrate on characterization on how they play the role in the story on Sidney Sheldon’s novel

The Sky is Falling.

Purpose of the study

Purpose of this paper is to describe about characterization as expressed in Sidney Sheldon’ novel The Sky is Falling. The writer would like to find out whomever the characters, namely : main character, peripheral character, protagonist and antagonist and to describe their characterization presented in the novel.

Significance of the writing

The writer hopes that this paper can be useful for readers, especially for English diploma student to encourage them to study literature for their final assignment

2. A BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF CHARACTERIZATION

2.1 Characterization

The description of characters helps us to understand the author’s intent. In real life, we are told from an early age not to judge people by external appearance. However, in fiction the opposite is more often the case: physical description in variable a sign of what lurks beneath the surface, given the brevity of most short stories; these physical details may be minimal but revealing in their lack of particulars.

The characters in a novel usually appear completely, for example the correlation of the characteristics of physical, the condition of social, behavior, characteristics and habit, etc. and also how the relation among the characters is directly or indirectly. Because of that, it will give the illustration more clearly and concrete about the situation of those characters in a novel can give more impression.

Characterization can be presented either directly or indirectly. Direct characterization takes place when the author literally tells the audience what a character is like. In indirect characterization, the audience must deduce for themselves what the character is like through the character’s thought, actions, speech, looks, and interaction with other characters.

Characterization is the method used by the writer to develop a character. The method includes showing the character’s appearance, displaying the

character’s action, revealing the character’s thoughts, letting the characters speak, and getting the reactions of others.

Stories, like plays, are about characters that though not real people, are drawn from file. A character is reasonable facsimile of a human being, with all the good and bad traits of being human. A story is usually concerned with a major problem that a character must face. This may involve interaction with another character, with a difficulty situation or with an idea or general circumstances that force action. The character may win, lose or tie. He or she may learn and be the better for the experience or may miss the point and be unchanged.

In fiction, a character may be defined as a verbal representation of a human being. Through action, speech, description, and commentary, authors portray characters that are worth caring about, rooting for and even loging, although there are also characters you have may laugh at, dislike or even hate.

Character can be defined as “story doer” or “characterization”. It is a whole unity between a character and his characterization, because it is not rare that mentioning a name of certain character directly signal us to his characterization. Stanton (1965:17) says: :the use of character term itself in any English suggest two different, that it as the story characters presented, and as behavior, attraction, willing, emotion, and moral principal possessed by the characters”.

In a story emphasizing a major character, you may expect that each action or speech, no matter how small, is part of a total representation of that

complex combination of both the inner and outer self that constitutes a human being.

Characterization is the process of creating characters in fiction, often those who are different from and have different beliefs than the author. A writer can assume the point of view of child, and older person, a member of the opposite gender, someone of another race or culture, or anyone who is not like them in personality or otherwise. In novels, characterization is character development, which helps to establish themes.

The character indicates to the person who plays in the story, for example as the answer of the question: “who is the main character in this novel?”, or “how many players in this novel?”, or “who is the protagonist and antagonist in this novel?” and so on. The character indicates to characteristics and attitude of the player. In addition, more indicates to the personal quality of a player in a story. According to Jones (1968:33) states, that characterization is the description of clear image about someone who appeared in a story.

Abraham (1981:20) states that characters is people who appeared in a narrative drama, and the readers interpret it as the person who has a moral quality and a certain tendency such ass being expressed in what they did.

The meaning of characterization is larger than character because characterization includes the problem of who is the character of this novel, how is the character of him or her, so that it can give a description that clear to the reader .

Therefore, in characterization contained two aspects: contents and type. Actually, what and who is the character in a novel do not important during the reader can identified at that character (Jones,1968:33) or interpret that characters according to the logic of the story of the perception.

2.2 Main Character and Peripheral Character

When reading a novel, we usually face several characters that appeared in the story. However, each characters has different role. We can see from the role point of view or the level of importance of the character in the story, there is character that only appeared once in the story. The character that called first is central character or main character,. Whereas the second is peripheral character.

Main character is the character that often appeared in the almost each event is the important and the special character, so that we feel, is so dominates the story. In certain novel, the main character always appeared in almost each event and can be found in each page of novel. Usually, a synopsis made for the main character. The main characters in a novel can more than one person.

On the other hand, there are characters that appeared once or something in the story, and may be relatively in short portion, which is called peripheral character.

2.3 Protagonist and Antagonist

Protagonist is the character who is favorites by the reader. He or she like a hero or the good people, because he or she always does ideal role, the rules and values in society. The reader always gives sympathy and emphasis by the protagonist character.

On the other hand, the protagonist is, it should be pointed out, not always the hero of the story. Many authors have chosen to unfold a story from the point of view of a character that, while not central to the action of the story to be the protagonist; even if the protagonist’s actions are not heroic, the are nonetheless usually vital to the progress of the story. Neither should be the protagonist be confused with the narrator, they may be same, but even first person narrator need not to be the protagonist. As they may simply be recalling the event while not living through it as the audience is.

The antagonist is the character of the story that presents the opposition against which the heroes or protagonist must contend. In the classic style of the story where in the action consist of a hero fighting a villain; the two can be regarded as protagonist and antagonist, respectively. However, authors have often created situations that are more complex. In some instance, the story is told from the villain’s point of view, in such a story, the hero is regarded as the chief antagonist of the story.

The antagonist is any character in literally work that opposes the effort of the antagonist (hero or main character). Many stories have only a single antagonist (or one main one), while longer works, especially novels, may have many antagonist.

3.1 The Main Characters

3.1.1 Dana Evans

Dana Evans is a reporter and journalist who is extremely popular with a credit of having returned after covering the strife torn Sarajevo. She now is an anchorwoman with a leading TV channel She is a woman who has a nice face, black hair, slim body, grey eyes. She is also has a pleasured smile. She is loved wherever she is. She has also brought home an adopted boy, Kemal , who had lost not only both his parents but also an arm in the war and bombing of Sarajevo. It can be seen from the quotation below :

“Dana Evans, pada usia 27 tahun, berwajah cantik, dengan sosok langsing, rambut hitam kelam, mata abu-abu cerdas, wajah berbentuk hati, dan tawa yang hangat, menggugah.” (Sidney Sheldon, 2001: p.14)

She is a daughter of colonel. It makes her and her father should move from one place to other place. As her live gives her any chances to get any experiences. Dana is a famous journalist in USA. Many of her news get the best rank in all over the USA. She is belong to educated person. She is very beautiful, not only from her external appearance but also from her internal appearance. She could make a very touching news, that’s why she has so many admirer who admire her news so.

Dana Evans has just came back from SARAJEVO, BOSNIA, and HERZEGOVINA. She is rushing to a meeting with the last member of Winthrop family, Gary Winthrop. A few hours later after the interview with Dana Evans. Gary Winthrop was shot and killed by some thieves who were, supposedly, stealing some paintings-the rest of the Winthrop family were killed in a series of suspicious “accidents” a few months beforehand. Then, she began to investigate, delving deeper and deeper into the family’s secrets to get some information of this accidents. After that she tells her boss matt, that she wants to investigate it, first of all she is looking for some people who ever worked at his house and meets some of his close friends. It can be seen from quotation below:

“apa sebenarnya yang ingin kau katakan, Dana? Matt, aku ingin mengatakan bahwa lima kematian keji yang menimpa sebuah keluarga dalam kurun waktu kurang dari setahun tidak mungkin dari sekedar kebetulan.” (Sidney Sheldon, 2001: p.61)

3.1.2 Jeff Conors

Jeff Conors is Dana Evans’s boy friend. He met Dana Evans in Washington Tribune Network. He has been already 30 age of years, but he has a younger face than he should be. He has a pleasured and charming character. It can be seen from quotation below :

“Ia berusia tiga puluhan, tinggi dan ramping, dengan wajah kekanak-kanakan dan pembawaan tenang dan santai yang menarik hati. Jeff dan Dana saling jatuh cinta, dan mereka sudah bicara tentang perkawinan.”

Jeff Conors was a pitcher all-star before he got broke his leg, and now he is a reporter on air of sport programmed in Washington Tribune Network where Dana Evans is. He also writes daily column for Washington Tribune Syndicate. It can be seen from quotation below :

“Disitulah Dana berjumpa Jeff Conors. Pria itu dulu pitcher All-Star sampai ia menderita cedera lengan dalam kecelakaan saat bermain ski. Jeff kini reporter on air acara olahraga di WTN, juga menulis kolom harian untuk Washington Tribunne Syndicate.” (Sidney Sheldon, 2001: p.17)

3.1.3 Taylor Winthrop

He is a handsome man who can fascinate people around him. He has black hair, blue eyes, and thick chin. It can be seen from the quotation below:

“Dana memasukkan sebuah kaset, dan gambar seorang laki-laki tampan mempesona muncul di layar. Raut mukanya keras dan tegas. Ia memiliki rambut hitam, mata biru jernih, dan dagu kokoh.” (Sidney Sheldon, 2001: p.63)

Taylor Winthrop could be categorized as the richest man in Rusia. He has a lot of properties not only in Rusia but also in other countries such as Libya, Iran, Irak, Pakistan, Korea Utara dan China. He could achieve those all because of plutonium. Plutonium is a kind of fuel, the prime stuff to make an atomic bomb. The main aim of Krasnoyarks -26is making plutonium.

A hundred thousand sciences and technician lived and here. Taylor Winthrop knows what the function is. He gets much properties and it makes him became the greedy one. Then he decides to authorize it at all. And then his partner

Roger Hudson knows what he did, after that Roger Hudson asks someone to kill him. It can be seen from the quotation below :

“Dana mencoba memahami segala yang di dengarnya mengapa Taylor Winthrop dibunuh?, ia jadi serakah dan memutuskan untuk menguasai sendiri bisnis itu. Ketika mitranya mengetahui apa yang dilakukan Winthrop, ia menyuruh orang membunuhnya.” (Sidney Sheldon, 2001: p.350)

3.1.4. Roger Hudson

He is the major leader of senate before he got retired.. he ever worked with Taylor Winthrop in one or two comities. Perhaps he knows about the secret of the accident. As he had worked with Taylor Winthrop for a long time enough. It can be seen from the quotation below :

“Kamu mungkin bisa menemui Roger Hudson. Ia pimpinan mayoritas di senat sebelum pension, dan pernah bekerja pada Taylor Winthrop dalam satu atau dua komite. Ia mungkin tahu tentang sesuatu. Dia mengulurkann tangannya dan berkata “saya adalah kepala komite angkatan bersenjata.” (Sidney Sheldon, 2001: p.134)

Roger Hudson has a resolute face. He is fifty years old, with a couple grey of eyes, cool and smile cautiously. He keeps away and takes care. It can be seen from the quot ation below :

Roger Hudson berwajah tegas, berusia limapuluhan, dengan mata kelabu dingin dan senyum waspada. Sikapnya menjaga jarak dan hati-hati.” (Sidney Sheldon, 2001: p.133)

3.2 The Peripheral Characters

3.2.1 Matt Baker

Matt Baker is Dana Evans’s boss. He is a kind man. He is a short man whose hair is black. He is belong to a wise and smart man, that’s why sometimes he could be patient in any cases of his assistants. He is the operator of WTN (Washington Tribune Network). Washington Tribune Enterprises is a kind of station of television. It can be seen from the quotation below :

“Matt Baker berperawakan pendek, berambut kelabu, berusia lima puluhan awal. Sikapnya yang tegas dan tak sabaran dipicu oleh otaknya yang cemerlang dan selalu resah. Ia memakai setelan kusut yang kelihatan seperti habis dipakainya tidur, dan Dana curiga memang itulah yang terjadi. Ia yang mengelola operasi WTN, stasiun televise Washington Tribune Entrprises.” (Sidney Sheldon, 2001: p.16)

3.2.2 Elliot Cromwell

Elliot Cromwell has a very charming attitude, open minded, and easy to smile to everyone. He is a millionaire but, there is so much stories how he can achieve those all. He is such a puzzle, unpredictable.

He is almost love all of Dana Evans’s news. It can be seen from the quotation below :

“Elliot Cromwell berusia enam puluhan, dengan sikap ramah, terbuka, dan mudah tersenyum. Ia milyarder. Tetapi ada selusin kisah berlainan tentang bagaimana ia meraih kekayaan luar biasa itu, beberapa diantaranya tidak terlalu sedap didengar. Dalam bisnis media massa, yang bertujuan menyebar informasi, Elliot Cromwe; merupakan teka-teki.” (Sidney Sheldon, 2001: p.16)

3.2.3. Abbe Lasmann

Abbe Lasmann is an assistant of Matt Baker. She is a sexy woman. She has red hair. She used to help Dana Evans in doing anything. it can be seen from the quotation below :

“Abbe Lasmann, asisten Matt yang seksi dan berambut merah.” (Sidney Sheldon, 2001: p.15)

When Dana is hunted by Roger Hudson, Dana gets fear and she is confuse where she should stay for a while, then Abbe lets her to stay in her apartment. Abbe says that she will be save over there as no one will search you over there. It can be seen from the quotation below:

“Abbe Lasman berbicara. “Kau bisa memakai apartemenku. Tak seorangpun akan berpikir untuk mencarimu disana.” (Sidney Sheldon, 2001: p.395)

But it’s just her lying, she is a slanderer, she is a partner of Roger Hudson. Abbe hears that Jeff Conors wants to search Dana and Matt tells him that Dana is in her apartment, so she calls Roger as soon as possible to hide Dana to other place soon. It can be seen from the quotation below :

“Jeff Conors ada di sini. Ia mencari Dana, saya pikir anda sebaiknya menyingkirkannya dari sana, mereka akan datang ke sana (Sidney Sheldon, 2001: p.400)

3.2.4. Kemal

Kemal is an orphan that Dana Evans takes from Sarajevo. He has a smaller body than he should be in his ages. He is thin and pale with his red hair, he has no a right hand. It can be seen from the quotation below :

“Elliot Cromwell mengernyit. “Kemal adalah bocah laki-laki yang kau bawa dari Sarajevo.” Kemal berumur dua belas tahun, sosoknya kecil untuk usianya, kurus dan pucat, dengan rambut pirang acak-acakan dan dagu yang menunjukkan kekerasan hati. Di tempat lengan kanan bajunya kosong.” (Sidney Sheldon, 2001: p.19)

For some years he must live in a very bad circumstances in which there is too much riots that happened, too much bombs that kill his families as well, and one of the bomb has pulled his hand. It can be seen from the quotation below :

“Dana mulai bicara, Mr. Henry, Kemal baru berusia dua belas tahun. Selama berttahun-tahun ia harus tidur dengan suara ledakan bom di telinga, bom yang juga telah membunuh ayah, ibu dan saudara perempuannya. Salah dari bom merenggut tangan kanan nya.”

(Sidney Sheldon, 2001: p.50)

3.2.5. Paul Winthrop

Paul is the eldest son of Taylor Winthrop. Paul was dead in an accident of traffic. He slips into canyon. according to inspection of corpse, he is dead in the place where he is slipped into. It can be seen from the quotation below :

“Di tikungan inilah mobil Paul Winthrop tergelincir dari jalan dan terjerumus ke jurang. Menurut kantor pemeriksa jenazah, ia tewas seketika akibat benturan itu. Tidak ada penumpang lain. Polisi sedang menyelidiki penyebab kecelakaan itu (Sidney Sheldon, 2001: p.66)

3.2.6. Julie Winthrop

Julie is the only one daughter of Taylor Winthrop. She is dead in an accident when she is playing ski. Julie is a great player, she can play in a terrify area. Playing ski alone at night in a terrify way makes her get the accident even she used to play in the area. It can be seen from the quotation below :

“Dana meraih satu kaset lain. Sebuah jalur ski di pegunnungan Juneau, Alaska. Seorang pembawa berita dengan pakaian tebal berbicara,”…dan disinilah kecelakaan ski yang tragis itu terjadi kemarin malam. 3.2.8. Thomas Henry

Thomas Henry is the head master of Theodore Roosevelt Middie School. He is a wise man who has a responsibility for each of his doing. He fires Kemal from Roosevelt because Kemal has broke Ricky Underwood’s nose. He can not aid what kemal did. Then he suggest Dana to look for other school. It can be seen from quotation below :

“Anda lihat apa yang saya maksudkan, miss Evans,” Thomas Henry berkata. “sikapnya itu saya-saya tidak tahu bagaiman menjelaskannya. Saya merasa kami tidak bisa lagi mentolerir tingkah laku Kemal. Saya sarankan anda mencari sekolah yang lebih cocok untuknya.” (Sidney Sheldon, 2001: p.130)

3.2.9. Madeline

Madeline is Taylor Winthrop’s wife who has a prestige attitude, loyal and friendly to others. She is a beautiful woman in her ages. She is a generous woman. She is standing in front of a building with a group of children. She gives a clinic care center for the children who get any violence or a victim of some riots. It can be seen from the quotation below :

3.2.10. Victor Booster

Victor Booster is an African-American with a hard face and a couple of sharp eyes. He is a bald man, it makes his head seems glows under the light. It can be seen from the quotation below :

“Victor Booster adalah orang Afrika-Amerika, dengan wajah keras dan mata tajam. Kepalanya yang gundul berkilau di bawah lampu langit-langit.” (Sidney Sheldon, 2001: p.70)

He says that Dana and her friends such a coyote who bites the corpse and he gets angry. It can be seen from quotation below :

Jack Stone is a chief petty officer of Mr. Victor Booster in FRA. He has a tall body, slim and he has a nice face in her early forties. It can be seen from the quotation below :

He has a small body, pale with a couple of green eyes and curved face. He is a driver of Taylor Winthrop, he is paid by Taylor Winthrop as Taylor has killed Gabriel Falcon. Taylor Winthrop promises that he will saves him and take him out from the prison. It can be seen from the quotation below :

3.2.18. Sasha Shdanoff

He is the leader of developing economic international office. He is the only one of the witness who knows about the secret of Taylor Winthrop. He is the reason why Roger Hudson wants to help Dana. Roger has been so long to search for him. But he doesn’t find him yet. Then Dana tells Roger that she has found Sasha. Then he is killed by Roger Hudson. It can be seen from the quotation :

3.3.1.Dana Evans

Dana Evans is a kind woman. Even she has knew that Rachel is the widow of Jeff Connors, but when Rachel got breast cancer, she lets Jeff to accompany Rachel while she is taken care of in hospital. It can be seen from the quotation below :

“Jeff menhembuskan nafas dan berkata bahwa Rachel mengidap kanker payudara dan ia memintaku untuk ikut bersamanya ke Miami, Dana memeluknya dan berkata, “tentu kau harus pergi.” (Sidney Sheldon, 2001: p.178)

3.3.2.Jeff Connors

Jeff is a kind and loyal man. As he knows that Rachel gets breast cancer and Rachel asks him to go with her. Before he approves her to go with her to Miami, he gets permitted to Dana. Even he knows that their wedding party will be coming soon, but he decides to postpone it for a while and go to Miami to take care her there. It can be seen from the quotation below :

3.4. Antagonist

3.4.1. Roger Hudson

At first time he is belong to a kind man who cares to help others. He always helps Dana in seeking for Sasha Shadnof, he always helps Dana whenever she asks for any help, but unfortunately, that’s just his lying. He acts as if he is a hero for Dana. After Dana finished to find Sasha, he decides to kill Dana as soon as possible. It can be seen from the quotation below :

“kau telah mendapatkan informasi yang kami butuhkan, kau sama sekali tidak berguna bagi kami lagi, dan kami mau menyingkirkan mu.” (Sidney Sheldon, 2001: p.406)

3.4.2. Pamela Hudson

Pamela Hudson is a horrible woman. She acts as if she is a friendly and kin woman who cares to everyone especially Dana’s son, Kemal. She suggest Dana to take a baby sister who will save Kemal while she goes to other countries. But, in fact it’s just her lying to mask everything well. After that, she wants to kill Dana sooner when Dana told her that she has already know about the secret of the accident. It can be seen from the quotation below :

“Begitu Roger meletakkan telepon dan berkata bahwa Dana telah mengetahui segalanya, Pamela berkata “kalau begitu kita harus segera menanganinya.” (Sidney Sheldon, 2001: p.361)

Victor Booster is a thrilling man. He has a horrible face. When Dana met, he shouted Dana and said with a very loud voice that makes Dana got fear. 4. CONCLUSIONS AND SUGGESTIONS

4.1 Conclusions

After studying the characterization through Sidney Sheldon’s Novel The

Sky is Falling, finally the writer concludes that there are four main characters in

Sidney Sheldon’s Novel The Sky is Falling, namely Dana Evans, Jeff Connors, Taylor Winthrop, Roger Hudson. Each of the main characters has different role to complete the story.

There are eighteen peripheral characters in this novel, namely Matt Baker, Elliot Cromwell, Abbe Lasman, Kemal, Paul, Julie, Rachel Stevens, Thomas Henry, Madeline, Victor Booster, Jack Stone, Pamela Hudson, Dieter Zander, Vincent Manchino, Antonio Persico, Marcel Faloon, Lee Hopkins, Sasha Shdanoff.

Each of characters in this novel has a different way of think and attitude behavior. we live in individual and social being. We have to respect each other and try to be a kind one. We have to know how to make a good relationship to each other. Consequently, there are no people can lives alone without having social contact so we have to know how to make all better.

By Reading this paper the writer hopes the readers to understand about the characters in this novel. The readers will know how to discern the difference between Protagonist and Antagonist. The writer hopes that this paper would be useful for the next research. 1.Synopsis

The main character to this book is Dana Evans, an anchorwoman for the

press, who was also featured, though not as a main character, in another of Sidney Sheldon's book, The Best Laid Plans. The story starts off with a prologue, a mysterious auction that involves a huge amount of money. Dana Evans had just came back from Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. She is rushing to a meeting with the last member of the Winthrop family, Gary Winthrop.

Dana couldn't believe that accidents had wiped out one of the most prominent families in the world. She began to investigate, dwelving deeper and deeper into the family's secrets. Meanwhile, Kemal, the crippled boy (he only has one arm) Dana found in Sarajevo, caused trouble and launched into fights at school, due to the fact that some bullies, mainly a boy named Ricky Underwood, kept insulting Dana.

Dana was called to school a couple of times to manage Kemal. Kemal was finally expelled after he hospitalized his tormentor, Ricky. Jeff Connors, Dana's fiance, is also occupied, looking after Rachel Stevens, his ex- wife, who

was recently diagnosed with breast cancer. Rachel is a model, one of the highest paid in the world, and was Jeff's wife for 4 years. Due to Dana's investigations, and him taking care of Rachel, they postponed their wedding to a later date. Dana couldn't find anything remotely suspicious about the Wintrops family and was on the verge of giving up when she unexpectedly stumbled upon a case against Taylor Wintrop, while searching the internet for apartments for her, Jeff and Kemal.

The case was filed by Joan Sinisi and was later dropped for some mysterious reason. Dana soon found out that Taylor Wintrop paid a huge settlement for the case to be dismissed. To Dana's astonishment, Joan refused to talk about the case, and asked her to leave. When Dana finally persuaded Joan to tell her, Joan "accidentally" fell down from her balcony and died. Her death was ruled out as an accident, even though its impossible for her to fall out of her balcony accidentally, due to a four foot wall preventing it. The maid taking care of Joan left after the "accident", to visit her family. As she, determined despite the dangers, followed her leads, Dana befriended Roger Hudson was a former senate leader and billionaire who had some strange connection to Taylor Wintrop, and his wife, Pamela Hudson. They helped Dana a lot on her investigation, although Roger Hudson was very uncomfortable when Dana started talking about Taylor Wintrops. Dana became friends with the couple when Kemal broke an extremely expensive vase, she'd been forced to take Kemal with her when he got into major trouble at school, and the Hudsons' told her not to worry. She also made an enemy

screamed himself hoarseand told her to leave before she even got ten words out. Booster's aide, Jack Stone, became her friend when he helped her out, by warning her off Booster's abruptness and anger towards the media.

2.Biography of The Author

Sidney Sheldon was born on February 11th,1917, in Chicago, Illinois. He attended Northwestern University briefly during the mid – 1930s, but did not

continue to peruse his avenue. He was in U.S Army Air Forces, and was discharged in 1941, at which time he collaborated with Ben Roberts on his first screenplay in 1948 for The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer (1947), then went out to write a list of screenplay which includes Easter Parade (1948), Annie Get Your Gun (1950), and Jumbo (1962). It seems his early success knew no restrictions, as he also won a Tony Award in 1959 for the Broadway Musical “Redhead”.

In 1963 Sheldon began to create, produce and write television series, for which he gain incredible popularity. The Patty Duke Show (1963-1966) and I Dream of Jeannie (1967-1970) which received several Emmy Nominations. The Naked Face (1970) was Sheldon’s first novel, and was awarded the Mystery Writers of America Edgar Award for best mystery novel. This began a consistent stream novels, which brought him to the best sellers list an extraordinary number of times and included recently “The Stars Shine Down”(1992) and “Nothing Last Forever”(1994).
