CHAPTER V CONCLUSIONS AND SUGGESTIONS
This chapter is divided into two parts. The first part is conclusion of the analysis of the answer of the questions stated in the problem formulation. The
second part is suggestions for the future researches and teaching English related to the study.
A. Conclusions
From the analysis three conclusions can be drawn. First conclusion relates to Marguerite’s character as portrayed in the novel. Marguerite is the major
and the main character. Besides, she is described as a compelling character. She is a smart and imaginative person. Since her childhood, Marguerite loves to read a
lot of books especially literary works. She also experiences living with her grandmother and her own mother. These cause a change of her perception of life
as a black girl from her childhood up to her adolescence. She grows from an unconfident black girl into a confident girl.
Second conclusion relates to Marguerite’s life as a black woman portrayed in the novel. Marguerite’s life as a black girl is full of experiences. In
her childhood, Marguerite as a young girl has to face some experiences that make her sad or unconfident such as racism, being abandoned by her parents, self-
unconfidence and also sexual abuses. When living with her grandmother, Marguerite and her family have already faced unfair treatments from white
people. Besides, Marguerite also has to face the fact that her parents have
abandoned her and Bailey and sent them to their paternal grandmother. When living with her mother, at her age of seven, Marguerite experiences a bad event.
She is raped by her mother’s boyfriend, Mr. Freeman. It takes her to the muteness for some years. That event has a strong effect on young Marguerite’s life. In her
adolescence, the appearing of racism is stronger than before. It is shown when she gets a toothache and her brother bailey sees a dead body of black man. Marguerite
is a smart girl, it is described in the novel that she is at the top of her class. But as a black girl even she has the top score of her class, she gets difficulty in getting a
job even as a streetcar conductor. Thirdly, the conclusion relates to Marguerite’s perception about life as a
black woman. From the analysis some perceptions of life appear because of her experiences during her stay with he grandmother up to her parents’ house, and her
childhood until her adolescence. First, in her childhood Marguerite’s perception of her appearance as a black girl is bad. She even thinks if she is in the wrong place
and becomes an unconfident girl. She also perceives that her parents do not really love her and her brother Bailey. Marguerite’s perceives that her parents have
abandoned her and her brother Bailey. Because of her lack of parents’ love she perceives that Mr. Freeman’s bad treatment is part of parents’ affection. That
event influences Marguerite’s perception about sexual life in her adolescence. It is traumatic for her. Second in her adolescence, Marguerite perceives that racism is
part of her life as a black girl. It is shown in her life during her stay in her grandmother up to her parents. Racism cannot be avoided in her childhood until
her adolescences. Marguerite also perceives that life is hard, full of conflict and
problem, sex is a bad thing and even thinks that male and female relationship only concerns sex. Those perceptions appear because her experiences during her live.
For Marguerite, life as a black woman is also a struggle. In the novel, Marguerite always struggles for her life. One of the examples is when she is pregnant and has
a son in the age of sixteen years old. The last perception is Marguerite perception of life as a black woman is shown that nothing wrong with her appearance as
black woman, she becomes proud and confident as a black woman. Marguerite’s life is more colorful after she becomes a mother for her son.
B. Suggestions
