RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

CHAPTER III RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Research methodology is a technique that is applied by researchers to carry on his/her research to achieve the expected goals (Noviyanto, 2007: p, 18). The concepts applied by the researcher during the research are as follows:

A. Type of Research

In this research, the researcher employs a descriptive qualitative method. Walcott states: “Qualitative research is fundamentally interpretive. This means that the

researcher makes an interpretation of the data. This includes developing a description of an individual or setting, analyzing data for themes or categories, and finally making an interpretation or drawing conclusions about its meaning personally and theoretically, stating the lessons learned, and offering further qu estion to be asked.” (in Creswell, 2003: p. 82).

This means the steps done during the research are not only to collect, and arrange data, but also, analyze data to verify certain problems. The result of the analysis is then to be drawn its conclusion. As the most important part of research, data acquired in this research are in form of words/sentences selected through some processes such as observation, noting, typing etc, that is why this research includes to a descriptive design. According to Bondan and Biklen (in Creswell), descriptive methods refer to collecting the qualitative data, analyzing it, writing the result (1994, p. 171).

B. Data and Source of Data

The data include interview transcript, filed note, photographs, video tapes, personal documents, memos, and other official records (Bogdan and Biklen, 1982: 28). In this research, the researcher obtains the data from two kinds of source data:

1. The first source data is obtained from TV Series “Sex And The City

Season 6”. The series are in forms of VCDs released by Kings Media Line and its Indonesian subtitles within. The series include 20 episodes, with 15

episodes are chosen to be source data of this research, but episode number

12 is not. Nevertheless, each episode is sustainable part that is influential to each other, so that, it is essentially required to consider. Besides, the researcher also prepares the English subtitles downloaded from www.moviesubtitles.com. Hence, the data are identified. They are in forms of English neologism-content words/phrases from the series, and its translation into Bahasa Indonesia. There are 52 data found based on theoretical considerations as seen in Chapter II. After that, the researcher cuts data into sections based on referential scenes by making use Ulead DVD Movie Factory to make it concise, in consideration with the

referential scene of each datum. Last but not least, “Sex And The City

Season 6” is considered to be source data based on three reasons as follows:

a. As the latest season, it remains accessible in Indonesia. The series is fictitious. However, neologisms obtained deal with reality.

b. The dialogues consist of many newly coined words uttered by the b. The dialogues consist of many newly coined words uttered by the

2. The second source data The second source data is taken from the questionnaires distributed to key informants who are considered to have these requirements:

a. He/she has to have willingness to participate in this research.

b. He/she has to master in translation theory and practice.

c. He/she has to master English and Bahasa Indonesia. As the information, the key informants may fulfill the requirements at least two or more requirements, but, fulfilling all requirements is highly recommended. Those informants are required to gain information concerning the translation quality in terms of accuracy and acceptability. They are intended to rate data, and give responses asked by the researcher through questionnaires as well as they give information in which they think it is necessary for the research. As the procedure applied in this faculty, the researcher is required to propose three key informants who are as qualified as the criteria proposed above. Arguments, suggestions, and rates made by the three key informants, then, become data of this research, which are as important as first data.

C. Sample and Sampling Technique

To achieve the goal, this research employs purposive sampling in which the researcher is more selective based on the theoretical considerations. Moleong defines, in qualitative inquiry; sampling is gathering information as many as possible from various sources and construction (2000). It means that data of the research are derived from certain words/phrases identified as neologisms in TV Series “Sex And The City Season 6”. The data chosen are in forms of English subtitles and its subtitles into Bahasa Indonesia.

D. Method of data collection

1. Content analysis This kind of analysis is done by watching the VCDs several time, identified as visual material, then reading the English subtitles (as documents), which are available in accordance with the number of episodes, as many as possible. Dealing with the purposes of the research as mentioned in Chapter I, this is required to understand many aspects of the series such as contexts, and story plots as well as the ideas of the story. Then, the researcher takes some notes English neologisms found, and finds out its translation into Bahasa Indonesia to become the object of analysis.

2. Questionnaire Questionnaires are commonly in form of drafts containing questions given to selected persons. The questions generally include particular problems to be answered by the participants in relation to what 2. E. Technique of Data Analysis

The steps in analyzing the data obtained in this research are described into some points as follows:

1. Watching the series many time to understand the story plots.

2. Collecting the data identified as neologisms into the data file.

3. Giving a code to make the data is easier to classify, both English and Bahasa Indonesia subtitles.

4. Analyzing and describing the translation techniques used in the translation of English neologisms.

5. Distributing questionnaire to key informants to rate Translation Quality in terms of accuracy, and acceptability. Accuracy and acceptability scale are enclosed.

6. Collecting responses from the questionnaires.

7. Recording the score of each questionnaire.

9. Classifying each datum into the classifications.

10. Drawing conclusion of data analysis

F. Research Procedures

Research procedures are steps from which the researcher starts to conduct the research. The procedures are below:

1. Determining the object of the research, that is English neologisms

and its translation into Bahasa Indonesia in TV series “Sex And The City Season 6”.

2. Collecting the data needed by rewriting data contained in the English and Bahasa Indonesia subtitles.

3. Coding the data. For example: 01:09:T2/I/001/SAC-CB/SL

And from jewish to pooish. The example above means, row 1 identifies the seconds in which the datum appears, (01:09), and the cut version which is in form of “Title” in menu bar, in (T2). Row II means the number of series, (I), while, row III shows number of datum is taken, in (001). Then, row IV initialize the abbreviation of the series (SAC as Sex And The City), which is then followed by the name of casts, such CB as Carrie Bradshaw. At last, row V means forms of data whether it is in source language (SL) or in target language (TL). English neologism-content words/phrases identified are And from jewish to pooish. 4. Distributing the questionnaire to key informants.

5. Taking back the questionnaire from the key informants.

6. Analyzing, identifying, and scoring the data to answer the following problem statements:

a. The translation techniques applied in each datum.

b. To rate accuracy and acceptability scale for each datum.

7. Drawing conclusion.
