CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

1.1

Background of study
Language is important for society. People need language to communicate with

someone else in their daily life. Without language they cannot express their ideas,
emotions, and feelings in spoken and in written forms. Trudgill (1983:13) states that
language is not simply a means of communicating information, it is also a very
important means of establishing and maintaining relationship with other people. In
society language also has an important role for human beings to communicate with
each other. People cannot be separated with language because language what the
member of a particular society use for communication.
Language has important function in society, on how to communicate with each
other. However, speech in almost any society can take different forms, like a dialect
in one region is different with another region. For example the dialect between east
java and central java is different.
Sociolinguistics is a study of language and culture in society. It is an effort to find
correlation between language and society, and observe any changes that occur in our
society. Sociolinguistics related to human society, including culture, norm,
expectations, and context on the way language is used. Trudgill (1983:32) states that
sociolinguistics is part of linguistics which is concerned with language as a social and
cultural phenomenon. It investigates the field of language and society and has close

1

connections with the social sciences, especially social psychology, anthropology,
human geography, and sociology.
There are a number of different branches of literature such as drama, poetry,
novels, songs, short story, and movie. All of these are works of the imagination or the
capacity for invention. The primary aim of literature is giving pleasure and
entertaining those who are voluntary to it. In addition, literary works express a series
of happening such as their social problems, struggle of life and conflict. Movie gives
so many useful values and messages to the human life that is complex with many
conflicts to be faced. It can give contribution to build up sensitivity to the
environment either. Movie touches all of our lives, because it is a display that
represented from reality that happened in our society. By watching movie, the
audience can find the exploration of human personality, and find many different
characters of people and get information about various behaviors and attitudes. Those
things can make them mature and able to know the way how to handle the difficult
situations and understand about other people’s thought. Movie is made not only for
pleasure, but by watching movie, we can take some lessons related with human life
such as how they adapt each other, how they communicate with God, nature, or
everything around them.
According to Andersson and Trudgill (1990), bad language is a damn language. It
is used to show the expression or strong emotion and attitudes. Besides, it refers to
something that is taboo or stigmatized in the culture and should not be interpreted
literally. Bad language is usually used to express anger, and other strong emotions
that the speaker feels. Sometimes, it is also used to insults someone whom the
2

speaker hates. Some people use bad language to show their bad feeling. Somehow,
bad language is used in all of the aspect unexpected in a literary work such as film.
Most of western film contains of bad language, even it has a lot of good message for
them who watch it.
The researcher take “Legion” movie to help the reader to get information and
knowledge about bad language that used in it, because from the movie itself the
reader can understand about the meaning of it and they can learn about the usage of
bad bad language. Bad language is prohbitted to use in the society, because most of
