CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

This chapter explains about the background of study, statements of problem, purposes of study, significance of study, limitation of the study , and definition of key terms.

1.1 Background of the study

Language is very important to establish and maintain relationship between people and society. language is a system of arbitrary vocal symbols used for human communication. By using language, people can express their idea, feeling, emotion and suggestion (Ronald Wardhaugh, 2006). Through language people can express their thought into words in order to communicate with others. Each person or a group of people has different way and language use in their daily communication. The different background such as environment and social structures make them different with each other. Despite of they have some difference environtment and social structures, English as an international language is now unifying them.

As an international language, English becomes one of the most important languages to be studied because many scientific books, novel, magazines, songs and movies are all written in English. If the readers want to improve and enlarge their knowledge, they should study about it. One of the important parts of English study is about sociolinguistics. It is the study of

(13)

the effect of any and all aspects of society, including cultural norms, expectations, and context, on the way language is used, and the effects of language use on society.

Sociolinguistics is concerned with investigating the relationships between language and society with the goal being a better understanding of the structure of language and of how languages function in communication; the equivalent goal in the sociology of language is trying to discover how social structure can be better understood through the study of language, e.g., how certain linguistic features serve to characterize particular social arrangements (Ronald Wardhaugh, 2006). It studies how language varieties differ between groups separated by certain social variables, e.g., ethnicity, religion, status, gender, level of education, age, etc. As the usage of a language varies from place to place (dialect), language usage varies among social classes, and it is these sociolects that sociolinguistics studies. The development of language is influenced by the society it self, especially, their environment. The different background of society creates a new language. One of the example is the existing of bad language.

Bad language such as swearing is a way of speaking that some people use to express their feeling of anger, annoyance, and frustration, or when they want to hurt someone else’s feeling. As a human being, anger can not be separated in a daily life. People use bad words in order to shock others and show up their dislikeness about something . it can be said that bad language commonly appears when people are angry. In this thesis, the writer focus in

analyzing bad language. Bad Language can be described as a language that is consider offensive by most people, it usually used by teenagers. Furthermore, it shows human’s characteristic. Bad language divided into many types such as taboo, slang, vulgar and swearing. Those tpes of bad language are often appear in many kinds of movies, especially adult movies. However nowadays, it also appear in animated movies or people use to call it cartoon.

Bad language has both a negative sides and positive sides. The negative side is giving a bad impression and makes you unpleasant to be with. However, the positive side of bad language it self if we see it from psychological sides is relieving pain and reducing stress. Moreover bad language words can be used in a more positive manner, in the form of jokes and humor (www.psychcentral.com).

The researcher is interested in conducting the study on the English movies, in this case the researcher uses “The Simpsons Movie” as the object of the study, an American animated comedy film directed by David Silverman in 2007. Despite it is an animated or people usually call it cartoon , the use bad language often appear in this film, moreover the number of the viewers spread out arround the world considering this film is very popular. Therefore the researcher considers that this movie is worthy to be analyzed. Nowadays bad language seems to be use as a media to attract the viewers because it is humorous. It is known that the knowledge of bad language it self bring an advantages to the learner of English. Because almost all of the

English movies contains bad language, it will be very useful for learner to know about knowledge of bad language in order to inform the English learner about bad language and to avoid misunderstanding in term of using it.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Based on the background of the study in the preceding chapter the following research problems are formulated:

1. What are the the bad languages found in “The Simpsons Movie”? 2. What are the types of bad language found in “The Simpsons Movie”? 3. What is the meaning of the bad language found in “The Simpsons

Movie”?

1.3 Purpose of Study

The purposes of this Analysis are directly related to the problem of the study. The purpose of this analysis is to get the objective description about: 1. The bad language found in ”The Simpsons Movie”

2. Types of bad language found in ”The Simpsons Movie” 3. Meaning of bad language found in ”The Simpsons Movie”

1.4 Significance of the study

The writer hopes that this analysis can be useful to those who want to know about bad language terms in English speaking country such as America, as the place settings in “The Simpsons Movie” Besides, this analysis would

able to give more information and help people to communicate and interact with English speaking countries people.

In sociolinguistic field, this analysis will be useful to:

 Inform the English learner about bad language and to avoid misunderstanding in term of use it.

 Be used as a learning material.

1.5 Limitation of the study

This analysis is intended to identify and describe bad language that is used in a movie, moreover the limitation of this study is analyzing “The Simpsons Movie”, an American animated comedy film directed by David Silverman in 2007.

1.6 Definition of the key terms

 Analysis : the process of breaking a complex topic or substance into smaller parts to gain a better understanding of it (www. wikipedia.com)

 Language : system of arbitrary vocal symbols used for human communication ( Ronald Wardhaugh, 2006)
