CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

This chapter discusses background of study, statements of the problem, purposes of the study, scope and limitation, significance of the study, and the definition of key terms.

1.1 Background of Study

Language is an important tool of communication. Through language we can express our opinion, ideas, suggestion and so on. Language makes our communication easier. “Language is a term of communication in speech and writing used by people of a particular country” (Oxford Dictionary, 2003).

According to communication in speech and writing, people use many kinds of language form, namely, verbal and written expression. In the verbal expression, they use it in daily communication with their social life. On the other hand, the written expression can be expressed widely into many kinds of written forms, for instance, letters, essays, novels, songs, etc.

This research will focus on verbal expression of language in “Drive Angry” movie. “Drive Angry” movie tells about a person who runs out of the hell and meets people in the earth. When the actor communicated or socialized with others, many of them used bad language in their communication. They usually use bad language in order to express anger, exhaustion, and to show the intimacy of each speaker. This research specially focuses on bad language used by the actors and actresses in that movie.

According to Anderson and Trudgill (1990), there are four kinds of bad language. Those are swearing, misuse, taboo, and slang. Bad languages areusually

(10)

used in informal situation, not in formal ones. Bad language refers to something that is taboo and or stigmatized in the culture, it cannot be interpreted but used to express strong emotions and attitudes.

To see how the definition works, we can look at the word “shit”. It literally refers to a tabooed item, namely exrement. However, when it is used for swearing, it is not meant in the literal sense, but to express strong emotions and attitudes. The example of bad language commonly known are shit, Christ, cow, bitch, etc.

The focus of this analysis is the bad language found in “Drive Angry” movie. Then, the analysis will be concerned on the description about the existence of bad language in “Drive Angry” movie, because it involves many kinds of expressions. Hopefully, this analysis will enlarge the reader’s knowledge about sociolinguistics, especially about bad language.
