1.2 Statement of the Problem

Based on the description of the background of the study, the researcher makes up the research questions below: 1. What are the types of person deixis found in the novel? 2. What are the translations of person deixis in the novel?

1.3 Objective of the Study

The objective of this study: 1. To find out the types of person deixis used in the novel. 2. To describe the translations of person deixis in the novel.

1.4 Scope of the Study

This study focuses on the analysis of person deixis found in Indonesia translation of the novel. To make the limitation of the research, the researcher only conducts the research of finding out about categories of deixis words person deixis also the equivalences of deixis translation in target text.

1.5 Significance of the Study

The outcome of this research is expected to give valuable contributions theoretically and practically. Theoretically, this study is to contribute as the source of deixis. Practically, the result of the research is expected to be useful for: 1. The Writer The result of this study is expected for the writer as referent in study English especially in deixis area. 2. The Reader The result of this study is expected to be useful for the readers to enlarge their knowledge about deixis. 3. The University The result of this study is expected to be useful for the university especially for English Department student.

1.6 Thesis Organization

This thesis is arranged into several chapters. In every chapter the researcher tried to elaborate them into the order below: Chapter I: Introduction. The first chapter consists of background of the study, statement of the problem, scope of the study, objective of the study, significance of the study and thesis organization. Chapter II: Review of Related Literature. This chapter is arranged to support, to explain and to direct in analyzing the problem of the data. The theories are used: definition of translation, translator, pragmatics, definition of deixis, and equivalence in translation. Chapter III: Research Method. The third chapter consists of research design, unit of analysis, source of the data, technique of the data collection and technique of data analysis. Chapter IV: Data Analysis. This chapter covers the analysis of the data that presents the research findings and discussion. Chapter V: Conclusion and Suggestion. It is the conclusion of the study and suggestions related to the subject which is analyzed. 7
