DATA GATHERING TECHNIQUES RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

participants and setting are expected to provide complete and different data. Having different setting will make the researcher get different finding on what the participants understand, believe, feel, do about teaching English using blended learning.

D. DATA GATHERING TECHNIQUES

In this section, the researcher will reveal the steps to collect the data. The techniques employed to answer the research problem were interview, classroom observation, and document checks. The main technique to acquire the main data was the in-depth interview. The interview was conducted to the research participant and was audio-recorded. Notes were also taken to get the more complete description of how the participants feel. The notes also function as the back up data in the time when recording devices failed as argued by Creswell 2003. To conduct the interview, the researcher used some guidelines. The guidelines were based on the narrative concept. The interview can actually be divided into two, namely pre interview and in-depth interview. Pre interview was conducted after the observation to gain some clarification of what the participant did during the teaching. Besides, it is also to prepare the in-depth interview. Pre- interview is significant in recognizing the style of the participant in describing the way the participants understand, believe, judge, feel about teaching English using blended learning. The interview is then transcribed into narrative to be analyzed further. Observation was done in classroom to discover the participants‟ action in teaching English using blended learning. During the observation, notes were taken to document the participants‟ behavior in teaching English using blended learning. The notes of observation were then crosschecked with the documents from the interview. The observation, in other words, is to discover whether the real action in the classroom confirms the action stated in the interview. All the participants‟ action was recorded in form of video. The researcher also conducted the document checks to answer the research problem. The documents needed to be checked are the lesson plans and other teaching administrative documents. The document is significant to discover whether the teachers‟ action confirms the planned activity in the lesson plan.
