CHAPTER III RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter discusses the methodology and procedures applied to discover the answer to the problem. This chapter is significant because it elaborates significant steps of doing the research. It consists of five sections namely, 1 research method, 2 nature and sources of data, 3 research setting and participant 4 data gathering technique and 5 research procedure and 6 trustworthiness.

A. RESEARCH METHOD

This research employs hermeneutics phenomenological study to describe and interpret the teachers‟ lived experience in teaching English using blended learning. Hermeneutics phenomenological research focuses on lived experience which looks at individual‟s or person‟s experience of phenomena. Hermeneutics phenomenology, as one of research methods of interpretative research, intends to gain deeper understanding of the nature of meaning of everyday experiences Van Mannen, 1990. Interpretative phenomenological research was the guided theory to answer this study whose aim is to describe and interpret the participant‟s lived experience and perceptions of a phenomenon. He also stated that the experience of someone‟s life had already been meaningful for hisherself. It could also be meaningful for others when it is interpreted to get better understanding. According to him phenomenology describes how one orients to lived experience, h ermeneutic describes how one interprets the „texts‟ of life, and semiotics is used to develop a practical writing or linguistic approach to the method of phenomenology and hermeneutic 1990:4. Meanwhile, Creswell 2007: 57 argues that a phenomenological study interprets individuals‟ lived experience of a certain concept or phenomenon. He emphasizes that a narrative study is a study that reports the life of a single individual. Phenomenology has a strong philosophical component to it. According to Creswell 2007 it derives heavily from the writings of Edmund Husserl, a German mathematician, and those who developed his views such as Heidegger, Sartre, and Marleu-Ponty. When doing the phenomenological research, there are two approaches to take. They are hermeneutic phenomenology which relies heavily on the work of van Manen and empirical, transcendental, or psychological phenomenology which is suggested by Moustakas. In this study, the researcher attempted to describe and interpret the phenomenon of teaching English using blended learning. The information is acquired mainly from interview. However, observation was also done to support the information. The information is used to discover the lived experience of teaching English using blended learning covering how teachers understand, perceive it, do it, judge it, think about it.
