4.1.3 Image Classification

Spectral signatures for land cover classes of interest were described with the use of training sampling areas, which were: 1 image acquisition on 15 April 2000 : cloud shadow, forest, paddy field, shrub, settlement, bare land, water bodies, inundation area and cloud, 2 image acquisition on 16 May 2006 : water bodies, mangrove, forest, settlement, paddy field, shrub, bare land, inundation area, fish pond. Next, the pixels of each input image were assigned to classes using maximum likelihood algorithm. Finally, the individual classes were grouped together to produce the map of swamps and not swamps areas. The supervised classification result for image acquisition on 15 April 2000 can be seen in Figure 16. The supervised classification result for image acquisition on 16 May 2006 can be seen in Figure 17. 38 Figure 16 Classification result for image acquisition on 15 April 2000 Figure 17 Classification result for image acquisition on 16 May 2006 Image acquisition on 15 April 2000 satellite image was classified into the 9 classes with the percentage area that can be seen in Table 13. Shrub area is the biggest area with the percentage 29,20 and followed by paddy field with percentage 21,00. 39 40 Table 13 Land covers area summary report for image acquisition on 15 April 2000 ClassRegion Area ha Area km 2 Percentage Water bodies 59,454.72 594.55 8.13 Cloud 14,810.40 148.10 2.03 Bare land 98,815.68 988.16 13.50 Cloud shadow 5,087.52 50.88 0.70 Forest 30,785.76 307.86 4.21 Inundation area 37,758.24 377.58 5.16 Paddy field 153,853.92 1,538.54 21.00 Shrub 213,857.28 2,138.57 29.20 Settlement 116,817.12 1,168.17 16.00 Total 731,240.60 7,312.41 100 Image acquisition on 16 May 2006 satellite image was also classified into the 9 classes with the percentage area that can be seen in Table 14. Paddy field area is the biggest area with the percentage 23,00 and followed by shrub area with percentage 16,00. Next, the pixels of each input image were reclassified to get the swamps and not swamp classes. Based on the Ramsar Convention 1971 that swamps is one of the wetland forms that included in the non-forested peat lands so for Image acquisition on 15 April 2000, swamps areas were formed from bare land, inundation area, shrub and paddy field. The others were formed as not swamps areas. Meanwhile for Image acquisition on 16 May 2006, swamps areas were formed from bare land, inundation area, shrub, mangrove and paddy field. The others were formed as not swamps areas.
