1 CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION

This chapter presents (1) background of study, (2) problem of study, (3) purpose of study, (4) significance of study, (5) scope and limitation, and (6) definition of key term. Each section is presented as follows.

1.1 Background of The Study

In this globalization era, all nations need to communicate each other. To be able to cummunicate with other countries we need English as a global language.Nowadays, English is very important, is used as a meant of international communication. As the consequent English is important to be studied, it is better to be taught in theearly time to the learner, moreover English in Elementary School has become a subject with the position as a local subject. According to Education and Culture in Suyanto (2007: 2), states that an elementary school can include extra lesson in its curriculum. It means that teaching English can be conducted in the elementary school.

Teaching English in elementary school is only giving introduction for the students to know English as soon as possible. So, when teaching them, it should be taught in a simple form and makes the students relax and interested. According to Brown (2000), physical activities such as playing game, making things, songs to gathers and drama can provide excellent contexts for children to learn English.

When children are having fun, they usually want to continue the activities. Children also need individual attention and support from the teacher to

make them feel more confident and secure about learning English,so that they felt enjoy and happy when studied English.

As a teacher, teaching English in elementary school is not easy like teaching adult students. Here, teacher needs enough preparation, the various techniques, the media, act, and the teacher must be creative to make the students interest and happy to learn English.

According to Hedge in learning a foreign language, vocabulary plays an important role. It is one of the most important aspects of the foreign language learning. Rich vocabulary helps people to understand learn new word (2000). When we are teaching an elementary school, we must give them vocabularies, because learning a foreign language need a vocabulary to know the basic of that language. So, teaching English as a foreign language needs to include about vocabulary to encourage their comprehension grow well.

The researcher agrees that vocabulary is one of the most important things for studying foreign language, but a technique of teaching vocabulary take essential attention for teacher to reach the goal of learning the foreign language. According to Suyanto (2007), technique of teaching is one factor that plays an important role in learning process. It means that the student’s success in learning activities depends on the teacher techniques. So, in teaching and presenting vocabulary, the teacher must be creative and able to explain the material clearly to make students interested and understand in it. Besides, the teacher needs to apply some techniques in order to support the teaching and learning process. Teaching

techniques are the way for making the learning process more active and helpful for the teacher to manage the classroom.

The statement above is supported by Anand (2002: 3), who investigated the technique of teaching vocabulary to children at SDN 1 Mulyo Agung Jetis, Malang. He found that the effective teaching techniques of vocabulary are guessing picture, asking and answering questions and singing a song, among those three techniques, students are interested in singing a song. They were very enthusiastic because they were free to express their styles and they felt happy. Besides, Basuki (2006:2), who investigated the technique of teaching vocabulary to the third year students of SDN Bangselok 111 Sumenep Madura, found out that the effective teaching techniques of vocabulary was include the translation technique, visual technique, the repetition technique, and the game technique. That technique is very important because students could enjoy the material presented. In short, teaching vocabulary by using various techniques are able to make a student’s enjoy the material presented and get easier to understand.

Based on the background, it is necessary for the researcher to study about the techniques of teaching vocabulary and how to apply the techniques at SDN 01 Sidorejo, Probolinggo. This school is chosen as the subject of the study,becausethe teacher that does not have any English educational background and the technique are received is able to implement the techniques.She just takessome courses in Pare. Also by using various technique at SDN 01 Sidorejo,Probolinggo, it can help the comprehension, and make the student happy and enjoy the material in the learning process.

Based on the background of the study,the problems are formulated as follows:

1. What techniques are used by the teacher at SDN 01 Sidorejo, Probolinggo? 2. How does the English teacher apply the techniques in teaching vocabulary at

SDN 01 Sidorejo, Probolinggo?

1.3 Purpose of The Study

Related to the statements of problem, the purposes of this study are:

1. To know the techniques used by the English teacherat SDN 01 Sidorejo, Probolinggo.

2. To describe how the teacher apply those techniques in teaching vocabulary at SDN 01 Sidorejo,Probolinggo.

1.4 Significance of The Study

The result of this study is expected to give contribution to the English teacher about the techniques applied in teaching vocabulary for young learners at SDN 01 Sidorejo, Probolinggo. After knowing the techniques of teaching vocabulary, the researcher hopes that the teacher is able to increase the techniques in teaching vocabulary. Furthermore, the research will contribute to the improvement of teaching techniques vocabulary of the Elementary school.

1.5 Scope and Limitation

This study will be focused on the teaching techniques used by the English teacher in teaching vocabulary at SDN 01 Sidorejo,Probolinggo. In addition, this study is limited to the fourth grade students at SDN 01 Sidorejo, Probolinggo.

1.6 Definition of The Key Terms

1. Teaching is showing or helping someone to learn how to do something, providing with knowledge, giving instruction, guiding in the study of something, causing to know or understand (Brown, 2000:7).

2. Technique is a wide variety of exercises, activities, or task used in the language classroom for realizing lesson objectives (Brown,2001:16). 3. Vocabulary is the words that need to be enriched and established as they
