3. Mafia as the Way to Keep Family Ties
It is proven that Corleone family is an organized crime family. Building a kind of family like this, of course, needs some rules to be obeyed by the members.
According to Lucky’s The Rules of Conduct, there are five rules of Mafia Tradition. The rules are obedience, loyalty, honor, pride and silence. In the novel,
it is also described the members of the Corleone Family have those kinds of tradition to hold. Although there are betrayals in the Corleone Family, in the end
they still stand proud and tall because there are more members who keep loyal to the family than the ones who betray.
a. Obedience
Lucky’s The Rules of Conduct states that obedience means that someone is willing to do what one is told. In Mafia organization, all members must do what
their boss tells them to do. As a matter of fact, obedience is about respect. A boss is the only one who can give the order to whack someone. If Don Vito tells
someone to do something, then it is must be done. When Tom Hagen, the consigliori
, does not know what to do anymore to face a rich stubborn man from Hollywood named Jack Woltz, Tom Hagen calls for Don Vito.
On Wednesday afternoon he had called Hagen to his home and given him his instructions. The instructions had consumed the rest of Hagens working
day and left him dazed with admiration. There was no question in his mind that the Don had solved the problem, that Woltz would call him this
morning with the news that Johnny Fontane had the starring part in his new war movie Puzo 64.
Hagen is told what to do by the boss, so it must be done. No more question is needed and everything is successful.
Once Amerigo Bonasera comes to Don Vito at Constanzias wedding day. He wants Don Vito to do him a favour. His daughter is beaten badly by two boys.

A week later, the boys who beat Bonaseras daughter are beaten and badly injured. The men of Don Vito do this quickly. Not more than a minute, the guilty boys
have unrecognized faces and broken bones. The obedience of Don Vito’s men are unquestionable; they do the order right exactly like they are told to do. All
members of the Corleone Family should be willing to do what Don Vito Corleone wants them to do because he is the boss.
