2.2.6. The Existing Method in SMA N 1 Kandangserang

Based on the observation, in teaching English, the teachers in SMA N 1 Kandangserang often use explanation and direct instruction. Both of them are conventional method only giving explanation about the material in front of the class, and asking the students to make written work in the final meeting. Both of the explanation and the instruction are needed in teaching and learning process. Those may help the students to learn basic skill and to get information about the materials although it will consume the students’ time. As the performance skill, writing needs more than it. Giving many practices to the students are better to develop their skill. Explanation and instruction are often used by most of the teacher. By those methods, the teachers activate students’ relevant prior knowledge and experiences, then help them to connect it to the new knowledge they will gain from the lesson. Those methods also familiarize the students to focus on the lesson. Explanation and instruction are the conventional and traditional ways in teaching and learning because the class will be teachers’ oriented. Therefore, the students have limited time to develop their skills. They tend to be the follower in teaching and learning process. Those methods make 32 the students be passive because the teachers do not give more time for practicing. They just give the material and then instruct the students explicitly to produce the written work, so most of the students will be confused how to start it. From the description above, the teacher should apply the effective method to improve the students’ writing skill. It should give a lot of time for students to write and help the students to start writing because as stated before that one of the difficult things in writing is to start it. Task Based Learning and Teaching TBLT is one of the approaches which can be used to teach writing. By using Task Based Learning and Teaching TBLT, the teacher is expected to make a progress in developing students’ writing skill than using conventional method.
