The Technique of Data Collection

E. Data Analysis

The researcher used textual analysis, technique of identification and interpretation sets of either verbal or non verbal signs. This technique is useful for three type of analysis: the discourse analysis, conversation analysis, and narrative analysis. Textual analysis can be conducted everywhere in which people find a text. This research technique was included as narrative analysis where it is an analysis of storytelling. At a glance, Wilson‟s The Illustrated Mum is “only” a children‟s story telling ab out how two girls dealing with “abnormal” mother. In the surface, it is merely telling the characters activities without normal mum. Whatever the author intends to tell to the audience, an interpretation is still possible. In textual analysis, especially narrative analysis, “Researchers are interested in how the story is structured and also what functions the story serves, such as building community, maintain relationship, or establishing group identity and values” Vanderstoep and Johnston, 2009: 218. The researcher saw this text as the voice of the marginal group: child, which presented unconventional images of children that were different from conventional images of children and ways of deconstructing conventional 72 children‟s books. Wilson‟s The Illustrated Mum was interpreted by the researcher herself. Based on the deconstruction theory, she needed to find and determine unconventional images of children and the ways deconstruction were presented in the novel. The researcher conducted questioning, observing, recalling, noting, coding, and identifying process. She used some steps: 1 reading and rereading Wilson‟s The Illustrated Mum carefully and comprehensively, 2 signing and noting any words, phrases, clauses, sentences, and paragraphs related to the unconventional images of children traits and roles and the ways deconstruction are presented, 3 identifying, writing down, and selecting the relevant data based on the research questions, 4 classifying the relevant data based on the categories and sub categories, 5 analyzing and interpreting the data, 6 extracting data to make new alterative reading on Deconstruction and, 7 applying the measure of trustworthiness of the relevant data by triangulation.

F. Data Trustworthiness

Triangulation is a process of seeing by using some angels. It is important to make sure that the data relevant to the researcher objectives are 73 trustworthy. This process is better than checking the data done by the researcher alone. It is done to make the data more reliable and trustworthy proven by more researchers. Therefore, the researcher rechecked the data that had been collected and she was helped by two students of English Literature Study Program of UNY. In addition, she consulted them to her thesis advisors about the problem, theories, data, and results of this research. The researcher hoped that checking and rechecking could reduce the flaws in collecting the data.
