51 Graph 4.1 Fry Graph Readability Level of Get Along with English 1 Estimated per Hundred Words Each Passage Based on the Graph 4.1 above, the intersection of X and Y was at 7 area. It was considered as the readability level of the textbook. Meanwhile, the user of textbook was the tenth grade students of senior high vocational school. It meant that the readability level of Get Along with English was three levels lower than the real grade of the students recently. The difficulty level of the textbook was equalized with the seventh grade level of junior high school. Was the declining of readability level a problem for the students? The answer would be presented in the discussion the second part of this chapter. 2 The Readability Level of English for SMK 1 To draw the Fry graph readability of English for SMK 1, this study calculated the X and Y value in the same way like the previous textbook. The first calculation was estimating the numbers of syllables to determine the X value. The second one was estimating the numbers of sentences in a hundred words to determine the Y value. There were three passages of the textbook which would be measured by Fry Readability Graph to know the readability level of it. Therefore the X and Y values got from these three passages. The average of both X and Y values of the passages would be determined as the X and Y value of the textbook. Later on, the intersection of X and Y indicated the readability level of the English textbook, in this case English for SMK. The number of syllables in every passage quite different. The first passage comprises 109 words and 186 syllables, in a hundred words it 52 consisted of 175 syllabes. The second passage consisted of 230 words and 313 syllables. And in a hundred words it consisted of 132 syllables. While the third passage consisted of 134 words and 177 syllables. In a hundred words consisted of 143 syllables. The other determination of Fry readability graph was the number of sentences in a hundred words. The first passage consisted of 109 words and 7 sentences, when it was referred to the previous explanation that every ten words can be estimated as a sentence. Therefore, this passage consisted of 6 sentences in a hundred words. The second passage consisted of 230 words and 13 sentences. In a hundred words it comprised 6 sentences. The third passage as a whole passage comprised 134 words and 12 sentences. In a hundred words this passage consisted of 9 sentences. The Table 4.2 below described the average syllables and sentences in every hundred words of each passage. And the Y value as the average sentence in a hundred words of English for SMK 1 was 7. Both X and Y would intersect each other and it was considered as the readability grade level of the textbook.
