ABSTRACT
Majority of Indonesian territory is water area. One of water area that potential to increase the
wealth of inhabitant is waduk. One of important things in waduk is plankton.
This descriptive explorative research aimed to understand the density of plankton population,
water quality of waduk, and the relationship between the density of plankton population and
water quality in Waduk Selorejo, Malang, in March 2008. The samples were taken from inlet,
central position of waduk and outlet, within three times (morning, afternoon, evening) and each
of them with three times repetition. The density was calculated from the number of individual of
given species divided by the number of location.
The highest density of fitoplankton population and zooplankton was at station 1 in afternoon.
The lowest density of fitoplankton was at station 3 in the morning, while the lowest density of
zooplankton was at station 4 in the morning. The density of fitoplankton was highly correlated
with temperature, the lightness, DO, NO3, PO4, and pH. The density of zooplankton was highly
correlated with temperature, the lightness, DO, NO3, and PO4. In conclusion, there was a
correlation between water quality and the density of fitoplankton and zooplankton population in
Waduk Selorejo, Ngantang Subdistrict, Malang District.
