CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

A.

BACKGROUND OF STUDY
Education is essentially developing individual potential as human
beings so that they can live optimally, both as individuals and as part of
the community and have the moral values and social as a way of life 1.
In natural manner, every human being is born into the earth to be
educated and even educate (pedagogic) in various ways and efforts which
done by parents, teacher assistant, tutor, educator, maid, baby sister, as
well as the surrounding community regardless of its form. Like behavior,
speech and insight, knowledge that has been delivered, directly or
indirectly, will contain element of education and will be impressed in the
minds of each personal conscience2.
Basically, human tend to develop theirself into a better one, more
mature and more stable. However, a person's tendency to develop his
ability does not happen just like that, without any effort for the
development of personality he has, because every human being has the
ability and uniqueness.
Life is change, and change can be meant by leaving the past to
welcome the new, improving the old things, or establish new things that

previously did not exist. The prior changing action that must be concerned
by students is to become outstanding students. The efforts to do in order to
achieve the performance is to maximize their capabilities.
The organization is a container for students to actualize
theirselves3. Meanwhile, the students have a main responsibility as a
student. Merging a role as a student and organizer within the student’s self
would be a big responsibility so that they can run those activities well. As
a student, they are required to be able to master the academic material,
while as a student organizer has a great responsibility as the controller of
the organization.
In Qoran, Ali Imron : 104, Allah SWT asks human beings to create
or participate in organization in order to act the kindness.

“And let there be [arising] from you a nation inviting to [all that is]

good, enjoining what is right and forbidding what is wrong, and
those will be the successful4

Virtue means a goodness. It means that the goodness should be
useful for the human being. Organization is a group of people who have
the same goals and useful for the members. The benefit has a wide
meaning. While, organization in education has academic and nonacademic benefits.
Student organization is a forum for students to proceed, both in
learning and education which obtained through the formal and non-formal
activities. In an organization, there are so many activities in which all
members of the organization should participate in it. The active and good
organization will often train its members in both academic and leadership.
In terms of academic activities, they conduct for example in the form of a
study or a discussion related to the theme of education, making some
collaboration researches with faculty, campus, or even with some
lecturers. In terms of leadership, they conduct such a leadership training
for members and prospective members, create an event that automatically
will need a committee. Through this committe, the members’ leadership

will be trained. According to the former of Students Executive Board of
Islamic Faculty in 2013/2014 period, organization has important role in
developing the students potential. In organization, the students can know
and develop thier skills and potential. In addition, organization will train
the students’ social ability in the community5. While, according to the
Chief of Syariah Students Association in 2014/2015 period, he said that
the students will be able to solve the probelms wisely, and the students
will have mental in solving problems6.
Organization has a very important role for students as mentioned
above, but for those who are not interested in organization, organizations
are viewed not have important role. Organization is viewed as time
confiscator and it is detrimental because disrupt the academic activities on
campus7.
According to Tonny Trimasanto, students are classified into two
groups, they are apathetic students and active students on campus
organization. Apathetic students are students who join the lectures
actively, and everything is measured by the achievement of semester credit
and a high GPA so they can achieve a degree as soon as possible. While

active student is a student who is active in various student organizations on
campus, which is often referred as "campus activist"8.
Both types of students have contrasting differences when entering
the workforce, activist students tend to be more sociable than apathetic
student. In organization, students are trained to be able to socialize with
other people, in addition, by joining organizations students are also trained
to develop strategies and to manage time, themselves and others. So the
student organization is important because it can change the character of a
person to be a productive student9.
Besides the positive side of the organizations, often we hear the
negative side of the students who were active in the organization, such as
the activists were identical with the title "Eternal Student". That is due to
fall asleep with the activities of the organization and then forgot to
academic tasks so that lectures is overridden and not able to complete his
studies in a timely manner. Sometimes, activist students are prone to be
dropped out because they was busy in the organization compared to the
lecture. Another assumption says that the skills are not only obtained
through following any organization. Some students who do not follow the
organization on campus also has a good soft skill abilities. This is a
fraction of view from many people about organization.
The problems of students activeness happen in the organization in
Islamic Faculty. In new academic year, many students who participate in
