The Analysis of the Major Characters Personality and Its

commit to user 44 Due to the environmental condition, the main mission is to survive in the island, therefore logics is the most dominant aspect required to observe and determine the actions that should be taken, therefore in this early chapter, the role of ego is dominant. Because the schoolboys has just recently been cast away from a mature civilization, the influence of it still have a hold in their action though not as dominant as logic, therefore in this early chapter, superego gives contribution though it is less than what ego does. The force of savage potential has always been a latent threat to the logic and conscience. Yet, it comes along the possibility to give the survival force a better chance of succeeding. This is the role of Jack at this early chapter, a latent conflict which may occur not far from the present, but his stance of existence is undeniable. Therefore, in this early chapter, Id give a slight contribution and a slightly wider chance of survival by focusing on immediate needs which possibly become more essential to the upcoming perspective.

C. The Analysis of the Major Characters Personality and Its

Development Along the N ovel’s Progress, Signified by the Major Events that Happen, in Relation to Freudian Psychoanalysis Theory. In order to analyze the development of the characterization and interaction quality between the main characters and the littlunts, the researcher will take commit to user 45 several events which are considered as the major shifting points of the characterization and interaction quality.

1. Starting Point; Ego Dominant Role; The Boys Deserted in the

Island, the First Tribe Meeting, and Ralph Elected as Chief. These three major events have mostly been discussed on the previous subchapter. The importance of these events is that they provide a starting point and a historical background which is about to develop as the novel progresses. On these early parts of the novel, as seen on the previous subchapter, the role of ego is dominant though it is still affected by the force of id and superego, it always able to channel the forces into a balanced system. The boys’ arrival in the island and their first tribe meeting shows their relation with the “mature” civilization and their effort to imitate one in the island they newly discovered. The knowledge they have can be considered as imperfect one since they are still within the process to absorb it as their main reference to act in the larger scale society. However, the different circumstance they find in the island requires them to act as far as their understanding can go. The influence of their earlier civilization, as represented by Piggy, lead them to have such law and order which lead them into the first tribe meeting and the election of chief. It is also represented on how the littlunts obey the early and simple law and order made by the major characters. Their need of survival and expectation of being rescued into the civilization they were bounded to, lead them to indirectly choose the part of personality which provide best chance to serve both aim; the ego. commit to user 46 Ralph, the main character with dominant ego feature, is being elected as the first tribe chief by means of voting. It shows how ego plays essential role on the early chapter where all characters have just cut off the force of civilization. However, the road to elect Ralph as chief was leaded by Piggy’s idea of the tribe meeting. And Jack was cornered by the dominant vote which refuse him. Yet, later on, Ralph give Jack a role as chief hunter which he understand will suppress Jack’s urge to become dominant. This early part of the novel shows that Ego and superego were dominant at first but still bear that Id has a potential dominant which at this early stage, can still be suppress when the children are still aware with ego and superego’s role.

2. Early Conflict between Ego and Id Tension between Jack and Ralph and Talk about Beastie

As the novel progresses, early conflict occurs between Ralph and Jack. The conflict is led by different perspective of priority between Ralph and Jack. Even though it seems as a minor problem but the Philosophical basis of the problem is very essential. Both set the idea of survival and both offer different kind of convenience which may lead to further conflict of separation. “We’re on an island. We’ve been on the mountain top and seen water all around. We saw no houses, no smoke, no footprints, no boats, no people. We’re on an inhabitant island with no other people on it.” “And another thing, we can’t have everybody talking at once. We’ll have to have „Hands up’ like at school.”TLOTF page 44, Ralph All the same you need an army--for hunting. Hunting pigs-- Jack slammed his knife into a trunk and looked round challengingly. TLOTF page 44, Jack And he wont be interrupted: Except by me. commit to user 47 Well have rules he cried excitedly. Lots of rules Then when anyone breaks em-- TLOTF page 45, Ralph, Ego Defence mechanism; Sublimation At this part of event, Ralph, who is elected as chief, struggles to establish order in the way that he sees the most logical way to survive by having both long term and short term survival method, Jack serves and offer only immediate fulfilment of biological needs which is food. Jack seized the conch. Ralphs right of course. There isnt a snake-thing. But if there was a snake wed hunt it and kill it. Were going to hunt pigs to get meat for everybody. And well look for the snake too-- Well make sure when we go hunting. TLOTF page 50, Jack My fathers in the Navy. He said there arent any unknown islands left. He says the Queen has a big room full of maps and all the islands in the world are drawn there. So the Queens got a picture of this island. TLOTF page 51, Ralph And sooner or later a ship will put in here. It might even be Daddys ship. So you see, sooner or later, we shall be rescued. We want to be rescued; and of course we shall be rescued.LOTF Page 50-51, Ralph, Ego Defence mechanism; Rationalization In order to be accepted as chief, Ralph applies his logic to both get attention from the litlunts, Jack, and Piggy. The term he uses are some logical assumption from realistic observation and what Freud called as Rationalization in deciding the steps he is taking and giving assurance to everybody. While Jack, though he also thinks and considers security issue, the matter he is taking in concern is the immediate one. Here, both Ralph and Jack methods serve them well in getting acceptance both ways which are; between Jack and littlunts for Ralph, and between Littlunt commit to user 48 and Ralph for Jack. The littlunt are satisfied while Jack gets the job he wants, and Ralph take it as a success of his method. This can be seen as in this line: The assembly was lifted toward safety by his words. They liked and now respected him. Spontaneously they began to clap and presently the platform was loud with applause. TLOTF page 51, Littlunts And differ from both Jack and Ralph, Piggy tries to simply get everyone’s voice to be heard and everyone’s fear to be overcome. He is keeping the moral value alive in the assembly. Youre hindering Ralph. Youre not letting him get to the most important thing. TLOTF page 45, Piggy Nobody knows where we are, said Piggy. He was paler than before and breathless. Perhaps they knew where we was going to; and perhaps not. But they dont know where we are cos we never got there. He gaped at them for a moment, then swayed and sat down. Ralph took the conch from his hands. TLOTF page 46, Piggy Piggy knelt by him, one hand on the great shell, listening and in terpreting to the assembly. “He wants to know what youre going to do about the snake-thing. TLOTF page 48, Piggy In conclusion, this Event maps the lining idea and point of views of each major character which in the previous chapter are observed have dominant feature of Id jack, Ego Ralph, and Superego piggy. While Ralph keep focusing on the logical way to survive in a long period, Jack focuses to fulfil the immediate biological needs, and Piggy to keep everyone listened and comfort moral value. Thus, at this section, though the contribution from jack and Piggy serve in a balance within Ralph system, their difference certainly contribute potential threat to the organization they are trying to build. However, in a general range the role of Ralph ego in this chapter is dominant. commit to user 49 3. Early Sign of Weakening Superego; Bonfire, Jack and Litlunt Ignores Tribe’s simple Rule of Speaking The bonfire, this is the moment when the difference and factually weak order break into a bigger and more real conflict. After Ralph delivers task and duties, it turns out that the littlunt is not much of obedient personals. The conflict started when even a burst of fire leave the chief and order he carries with nothing but his loyal follower. This is also when Jack, as dominant Id character, shows how persuasive he can be in such a landscape among the littlunts. Jack who was smirking and showing that he too knew how to clap. LOTF page 51, Jack Jack clamored among them, the conch forgotten. Come on Follow me LOTF page 52, Jack Ralph was left, holding the conch, with no one but Piggy. LOTF page 52, Ralph Jack’s dominance of id brings him to seek anyway possible to dominate other and to eliminate any obstacle barring he and his urge. For example the conch which is the symbol of order in the assembly which limit his urge to speak and express his willing. “The conch doesn’t count on top of the mountain,” said Jack, “so you shut up.”LOTF page 51, Jack Beside Jack’s burst of dominance, this is also where Piggy’s voice, as the character that is dominant in superego loses his influence over the littlunt and other main characters. “I got the conch,” said Piggy, in a hurt voice. “I got a right to speak.” They looked at him with eyes that lacked interest in what they saw, and cocked ears at the drum-roll of the fire. Piggy glanced nervously into hell and cradled the conch. Piggy lost his temper. “I got the conch Just you listen The first thing we ought to have made was shelters down there by the beach. It wasn’t half cold down there in the commit to user 50 night. But the first time Ralph says ’fire’ you goes howling and screaming up this here mountain. Like a pack of kids” LOTF page 61-62 Though Piggy struggles to speak of the right and order which is formerly established, the fact that the littlunts are still within the early stage of latent phase makes the littlunts in no confusion whether to hold on a considered weak order, or to go for the immediate excitement. This fact is closer to Jack’s nature Id which give him advantage to easily drive most of the littlunt to his order or his side. This event signifies Jack’s potential to take over the littlunts’ interest and influence their point of view due to their common nature. An early stage of latent phase means children who are already find excitement to the surrounding world including the social one but having yet an independently mature perception of it since they are in the early process of building it. This excitement demands compliance, and with a minimum pressure of the mature social environment the demands require an immediate compliance, and the term immediate compliance is closely related to the feature of Id.

4. Turning Point, Conflict between Ego and Id, Id Achieve First Triumph;

Further Tension between Ralph and Jack, Jack and His Hunters Kill a Mother Pig The best thing we can do is get ourselves rescued. LOTF page 73, Ralph Rescue? Yes, of course All the same, Id like to catch a pig first-- LOTF page 73, Jack I was talking about smoke Dont you want to be rescued? All you can talk about is pig, pig, pig LOTF page 75, Ralph, Ego defence mechanism, Reaction Formation But we want meat I was working too-- LOTF page 75, Jack commit to user 51 There was a ship. Out there. You said youd keep the fire going and you let it out LOTF page 99, Ralph The tension between Ralph and Jack are basically caused by their different perception of survival. However, it develops into a dominance wrest and personal jealousy between the two. The raising tone within their conversation and the Defence Mechanism shown by Ralph signifies the depressed stance of himself which represent the dominant feature of ego. Further, driven by failure, success, and ignorance toward each other, it bears the chance of separatism. The moment Jack succeeded to kill a mother pig is essentially a significant moment which expand his latent potential of getting the littlunts’ interest. With the nature of early stage of latent phase, Jack already has early advantage like presented on the previous subchapter. And the time he provide the mean to serve everyone’s immediate urge which is hunger, he knock what is left from Ralph’s long term and miss implemented conception Look Weve killed a pig--we stole up on them--we got in a circle- - I cut the pigs throat, said Jack, proudly, and yet twitched as he said it. Can I borrow yours, Ralph, to make a nick in the hilt?” There was lashings of blood, said Jack, laughing and shuddering, you should have seen it Well go hunting every day —“LOTF 97-98, Jack . And beyond that simple fact above, the experience of having the immediate urge fulfilled, drive Jack and the littlunt to focus only, become dominant, and closer to savagery in getting it. It also brings them farther from the previously established order, from ego and superego. Voices broke in from the hunters. We got in a circle-- We crept up-- The pig squealed-- _Kill the pig. Cut her throat. Spill her blood._LOTF page 97, HuntersLittlunts commit to user 52

5. Broadening Id’s Dominance; Jack Invites Everyone to a Feast where

They Eat the Meat With the unlikely succeeding order and Jack’s triumph to bring meat to everyone, Ralph’s position is getting more recessive. His influence toward the littunts is a lot repressed. Since he is within the same body as the other the urge of biological needs eventually gets him within the weaker position. Ralphs mouth watered. He meant to refuse meat, but his past diet of fruit and nuts, with an odd crab or fish, gave him too little resistance. He accepted a piece of halfraw meat and gnawed it like a wolf.LOTF page 103, Ralph, Ego Defence Mechanism; Repression The lines above shows exactly the relationship of ego and Id that they are within the same kind of body and related to one another, and affecting one another. On the lines above Ralph shows the burden of not being able to act as the way he thinks correct but to defence his existence in what Freud called as Repression. With Ralph, the dominant ego, repressed, Piggy, the dominant superego, who already has a weak position due to the nature of the littlunt and the environmental condition, is getting recessed even more. Jack who sees this picture is using his advantage to satisfy any urge he has against Piggy. Piggy spoke, also dribbling. “Aren’t I having none?” Jack had meant to leave him in doubt, as an assertion of power; but Piggy by advertising his omission made more cruelty necessary. You didnt hunt. No more did Ralph, said Piggy wetly, nor Simon. He amplified. There isnt more than a haporth of meat in a crab. LOTF page 104, Piggy, Jack With many advantage on his side, Jack cannot bear the urge to dominate, to have influence to the other, and to have his role literarily convened by the commit to user 53 other. This is also the even which comply as a significant turning point when the other feature of personality among the major character, Ego and Superego, show its edge before the feature of id in wilderness. Then Jack leapt to his feet, slashed off a great hunk of meat, and flung it down at Simons feet. Eat Damn you Take it He spun on his heel, center of a bewildered circle of boys. I got you meat Numberless and inexpressible frustrations combined to make his rage elemental and awe-inspiring. I painted my face--I stole up. Now you eat--all of you--and I-- LOTF page 104, Jack Jack, recovering could not bear to have his story told.LOTF page 105, Jack

6. Id’s Peak of Dominance, Piggy and Simon are Murdered

“We’ll hunt. I’m going to be chief.”LOTF page 190, Jack The conflict continues and become a beginning of a war among the major characters and demands victims both from them three alone and the extension of their influence, the littlunts. The fact that Simon was killed a moment after he realize that the beast, The Lord of the Flies, which was feared by the littlunt does not exist and it is only a manifestation of the inner force, shows that the conflict, the beast and the war is actually manifestation of inner war within every littlunt. Yet Simon is killed before he is able to share his understanding, he was killed due to the overwhelming savagery within the littlunts and he was misunderstood as the beast itself, this event shows how an urge and unconscious inner force of human personality can be dangerous that people can lost their humanity during its process. “Kill the beast Cut his throat Spill his blood” The blue-white scar was constant, the noise unendurable. Simon was crying out something about a dead man on a hill. “Kill the beast Cut his throat Spill his blood Do him in” The sticks fell and the mouth of the commit to user 54 new circle crunched and screamed. The beast was on its knees in the center, its arms folded over its face. It was crying out against the abominable noise something about a body on the hill. The beast struggled forward, broke the ring and fell over the steep edge of the rock to the sand by the water. At once the crowd surged after it, poured down the rock, leapt on to the beast, screamed, struck, bit, tore. There were no words, and no movements but the tearing of teeth and claws. Then the clouds opened and let down the rain like a waterfall. The water bounded from the mountain-top, tore leaves and branches from the trees, poured like a cold shower over the struggling heap on the sand. Presently the heap broke up and figures staggered away. Only the beast lay still, a few yards from the sea. Even in the rain they could see how small a beast it was; and already its blood was staining the sand.LOTF page 219 That was Simon. That was murder. It was dark. There was that--that bloody dance. There was lightning and thunder and rain. We was scared I wasnt scared, said Ralph slowly, I was--I dont know what I was.LOTF page 224, Ralph, Ego Defence Mechanism; Repression Simon’s death pushes Ralph to his edge so that he has to apply both Repression and Regression to survive. When his logics cannot serve him against the savagery shown by Jack’s tribe, he push the unpleasant impulses back to his unconscious, it is shown on the way he is unable to recognize what kind of feeling he felt. And other than thinking logically, eventually he prefers to be absent minded and just act like when he was still innocent. Ralphs voice, low and stricken, stopped Piggys gestures. He bent down and waited. Ralph, cradling the conch, rocked himself to and fro. LOTF 224-225, Ralph, Ego Defence Mechanism, Regression With Simon’s death, and Ralph’s condition, the one threatened most is Piggy who already has weak position from the beginning; his major feature of superego does not serve him well in the land where neither superior norms nor rule exist. And even with his position, the last words he says is to act based on the rule established. commit to user 55 Let me speak. He shouted. I tell you, I got the conchLOTF page 258, Piggy I got this to say. Youre acting like a crowd of kids. The booing rose and died again as Piggy lifted the white, magic shell. Which is better--to be a pack of painted Indians like you are, or to be sensible like Ralph is? Which is better--to have rules and agree, or to hunt and kill? Which is better, law and rescue, or hunting and breaking things up? LOTF page 259, Piggy The conch was the symbol of order established by the assembly previously, yet it was only the character with dominant superego dare to speak of it in this late part of the novel. The conch is also destroyed along with Piggy’s death. He was killed when his speech simply annoys the other littlunts who do not want to be bothered with rules and norms. It symbolize the death of both order and a part of humanity, which will leave only savage urge, Id, and logic, ego.

7. Ego being Dominated and Cornered by Id’s Force; Ralph is Alone

and Jack’s Tribe sets Out to Kill Him Im chief LOTF page 261, Jack You got to join the tribe. What dyou mean by it, eh? said the chief fiercely. What dyou mean by coming with spears? What dyou mean by not joining my tribe? LOTF page 262, Jack With the conch gone, Piggy’s and Simon’s death, Jack pronounce himself as Chief and set a new tribe. As a tribe which is conducted with someone with dominant Id, Jack begins to force everyone to join the tribe or else they will be considered as enemy and will be hunted. You got to go, Ralph. You go away now —“ You got to go because its not safe-- --they made us. They hurt us-- --its a tribe---- they made us-- --we couldnt help it-- LOTF page 269-270, Sam and Eric littlunts commit to user 56 Listen, Ralph. Never mind whats sense. Thats gone-- They hate you, Ralph. Theyre going to do you. Theyre going to hunt you tomorrow. I dunno. And Ralph, Jack, the chief, says itll be dangerous-- -- and weve got to be careful and throw our spears like at a pig. “Were going to spread out in a line across the island-- --were going forward from this end-- --until we find you. LOTF page 271, Sam and Eric littlunts Jack’s action of forcing everyone to join his tribe signifies how far a man can be without rules and norms, and the way he force other to obey him can be seen as the seed of dictatorship. This event leaves Ralph alone and hunted. And Ralph’s role in this late part of the novel, serve as the remaining part of humanity before the savagery. And with the littlunts, willingly or unwillingly obey Jack’s savage order; Ralph is once again pushed to the edge of his dominant feature. It shows how en ego might develop in wilderness without the boundary and help from superior order. Even the littlunts, represented with Sam and Eric, tell Ralph to not mind his senses. And he ends up being cornered by all members of the tribe, signifying how dominant Id can develop to be without supervision from superior norms and rules. 8. Restoration of Civilization, Force of Superego; A Rescue Party Arrives and Ralph and the Others Leave the Island A naval officer stood on the sand, looking down at Ralph in wary astonishment. On the beach behind him was a cutter, her bows hauled up and held by two ratings. In the stern-sheets another rating held a sub- machine gun. The ululation faltered and died away. LOTF page 287-288, Ralph A rescue party, symbol of the adult world, superior order, eventually arrive and save Ralph from his death. It symbolize the pressure of mature society can commit to user 57 influence and limit the development of one’s personality which is in this case shown mostly as Id part of personality. The arrival of the rescue party serve both as symbol of law and order which limit the previously uncontrolled development of Id and cover the irony of how people are unaware of their own evil potential. It can be seen on the following lines; “Nobody killed, I hope? Any dead bodies?” “Only two. And they’ve gone.” The officer leaned down and looked closely at Ralph. “Two? Killed?” Ralph nodded again. The officer knew, as a rule, when people were telling the truth. “We saw your smoke. And you don’t know how many of you the re are?” “No, sir.” “I should have thought,” said the officer as he visualized the search before him, “I should have thought that a pack of British boys —you’re all British, aren’t you?—would have been able to put up a better show than that —I mean—” “It was like that at first,” said Ralph, “before things—” He stopped. “We were together then—” The officer nodded helpfully. But the island was scorched up like dead wood — Simon was dead —and Jack had. . . The tears began to flow and sobs shook him. He gave himself up to them now for the first time on the island; great, shuddering spasms of grief that seemed to wrench his whole body. His voice rose under the black smoke before the burning wreckage of the island; and infected by that emotion, the other little boys began to shake and sob too. And in the middle of them, with filthy body, matted hair, and unwiped nose, Ralph wept for the end of innocence, the darkness of man’s. LOTF page287-290 The closing of the novel leads to the two conclusion of the influence of Norms, believe, and values to people development within latent phase and how people are unaware of what they might become. The law and order both serve as a mean to build and a mean to seal which result to both order and unawareness of the inner latent threat. commit to user 58 D. The Formulation of the Analytical Results of the Characters Personality and its development along the novel’s progress in Relation to Freudian Psychoanalysis Theory From the Previous subchapter, the development of the major characters personality in wilderness and their dominance toward one another and the littlunts can be illustrated as the following diagram; Major Characters Personality and Dominance Development : Ralph Ego : Novel’s Progress : Jack Id : Dominance and Influence : Piggy Superego toward one another and littlunts From the illustration above, it can be analyzed that the development of each characters with their variably different characteristic feature has made significant changes in the way of interaction, dominance and influence toward one another and the littlunts within a relatively short period of time. commit to user 59 At the beginning of the novel, the three major characters show a balanced influence and dominance toward one another and the littlunts. It shows an illustration of the stability and influence of the civilization from which they were coming from. Within the hold of civilization of mature personality and superior outer force, the characters are able to hold back the inner force within them in order to be accepted within the society. In Freudian Dynamics Personality development, the latent phase is the phase where a person is moving from the development of self gratification, dominated with the feature of Id and Ego, to the social acceptance toward himher. This is where a person learns about the social norms, beliefs, and values. This is also the phase where a person’s superego is supposed to develop according to the surrounding social environment. The early chapter of the novel give an illustration on how far the personalities can develop and achieve stability shown by the older boys as the three major characters. Yet, the novel also set a benchmark due to the dominant feature among those three and the potential carried by the littlunts who are mostly still at the early phase of latent phase. With the variably dominant feature of personality of the three major characters, the development of them can be represented in a more visible way through their interaction and dominance toward one another, and within a larger scale, toward the littlunts. Ralph with the dominant of ego, Jack with the dominant of Id, Piggy with the dominant of superego maps the inner dominance interaction to become more visible to be analyzed. commit to user 60 Ralph as the character with dominant ego feature has the most fluctuating development along the novel’s progress. It starts with the balanced position toward both Piggy, the superego, and Jack, the Id. With the dominant ego which represents logical way of thinking grant him the respect and influence from most of the littlunts on the early chapter of the novel. His purpose to have both long and short term of survival was accepted well by all. However, as the realistic feature of ego, it demands conditions for each plan he gives. The conditions required, demands discipline and restrict some part of immediate urge had by the littlunt. In wilderness, it turns out to be less binding than where it uses to be within the mature civilization. It is proven as the novel progresses, Ralph influence and all the order he tried to established are getting ignored more and more. The distant result provided by ego seems to be less effective than expected. This issue later on drive the littlunts and Jack who are represented to have dominant feature of Id, who requires immediate compliance of the biological urge. Whit this kind of condition, Ralph’s influence which was dominant at the early chapter falls into regression within the progress of the novel. Overwhelmed by the Jack’s superiority in complying the littlunt and his own biological urge, Ralph dominance sinks into a recess and eventually become dominated. Piggy with the dominant feature of superego has less advantage compared to both Ralph and Jack. His superego feature which is supposed to be developed during the latent phase is against the fact that there is no socially mature civilization in the island. With no holds of superior social boundaries and the early phase of the younger littlunts whose superego has not been developed extendedly, commit to user 61 Piggy’s dominance falls earlier than the other two major characters. It becomes worse when Jack’s dominance ascend due to his Id feature which gives him advantage toward the surrounding environment. Close to the end of the novel, his death symbolizes complete obliteration of superego among the littlunts. Different from the other two major characters, Jack’s dominant feature of Id give him significant advantages in relation with the setting of the novel. The Id within people’s personality is the oldest and the most savage part of human. It is driven by the biological demand of the body and immediate urges. At the early chapter of the novel, it is held back by the superiority of the civilization from where he formerly came from. That condition is proven on how Jacks decided to get along with the assembly at the early chapter. However, his focus on preserving biological needs further grants him more influence among the littlunts and overthrow the other two major characters influence. The other feature of Id is that it purely wants to act freely as the urge tells a person to act. It does not stand for rule which often limit their compliance effort to satisfy the urge. Therefore, in a later progress of the novel, it seeks dominance and omission of other restricting feature which are ego and superego’s features. The rising dominance of Jack is also supported by the fact that according to the Freudian Dynamic Personality Development theory, the phases before latent phase are mostly developing the role of Id and ego. Therefore, the role of both Id and Ego within the early phase of latent can be considered to be dominant since the superego is supposed to develop later on within the process of Latent Phase. Yet in order to develop the superego, mature and superior form of society commit to user 62 is needed. This condition is against the condition of the island in which there is neither adult nor mature form of civilization. With no supervision and boundary of a mature social environment, the urges of Id and ego are less limited in term of compliance effort. This condition is a contrary to the condition required for superego to develop. With superego in no condition to develop, the role of Id and ego is rising. And supported with the deserted island condition which is hard for logic of adolescence to process about, ego, though have a balanced position with Id earlier, and is falling as the further progress. With no limitation and boundaries from norms from the mature and superior society, the biological urges influence is overwhelming. There is no force of environment which requires the littlunts to behave the way they usually required to. There is only survival and getting the biological demands fulfilled. And with this condition, Id’s role is in advantage. Moreover, Jack’s success to provide meat for the littlunts grants him more reason to feel more superior to the other major characters. And with the sense of superiority, he eventually seeks to dominate. As the novel progresses, Jacks’ role is rising, Piggy’s role is falling, and Ralph’s role is in peril. This is an imbalanced feature of the usual condition of people in which when they are supposedly developing their Latent Phase. The contrast environmental issue from what is commonly happen lead to as well a contrast result. With the Id dominates the other two personality structures, humanity recess into an earlier stage of savagery. It is also supported with Piggy’s death who is dominant in superego, and Ralph being dominated by Jack’s Tribe. commit to user 63 At the end of the novel, the plot stops with the arrival of a rescue party. The rescue party itself can be considered as the symbol of mature and superior form of civilization. This signifies that the condition is back to what it is supposed to be happening in latent phase, an outer superior force holding back and limiting the Id’s urges and its compliance efforts. The arrival of the rescue party, whether intentionally or not, restores the required condition of the Freud’s Theory of latent phase; the unconscious process of learning to control the inner forces of personality, in order to become balanced and accepted by the surrounding social environment.

E. The Formulation of Golding’s Idea toward Adolescence latent
