5. The Use of Synonymy Strategy
There was only one transitive verb which was translated with synonymy strategy. Newmark 1988: 84 states that synonymy is used when there is no one-
to-one equivalent translation of the SL. When an SL word cannot be translated into TL word as a single word to transfer the same sense, synonymy is applied in
order to obtain the same sense between SL and TL. Table 4.15 illustrates the use of synonymy strategy.

The SL word harried was translated into TL as

. The SL word would not obtain the same sense if it was only translated as

. The SL word had to include both Indonesian meanings. Otherwise, the meaning could not be equivalent. When the
SL word was translated as
mengganggu dan menyusahkan
, the sense was equivalent.

transitive verbs in Reid’s book were translated with different strategies. There were five strategies used to translate transitive verbs in
this study, such as literal translation, paraphrase, transposition, naturalization, and synonymy. The findings of these strategies were also presented in the form of list
attached in the appendix 2.

CHAPTER V CONCLUSIONS, IMPLICATIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS
This chapter
consists of
the conclusions,
implications, and
recommendations. The conclusions deal with the major summary of this study. The implications provide a reference to the involvement of this study in English
education. The recommendations are given to future researchers to conduct further
studies on this topic and to language learners to make use of this study.
A. Conclusions
This research was a study of Anthony Reid’s
Australia and Indonesi
a’s
Struggle for Independence
O’Hare Reid, 2005. The book was written in English and translated into Indonesian. The study focused on the strategies for
translating transitive verbs found in the first chapter of the book. Two research problems were formulated in order to conduct the study. The first research
problem dealt with transitive verbs and their translation found in the book. The second research problem dealt with strategies used to translate the transitive verbs.
There were two major theories used in this study. The theories proposed by Kolln 1990 and Newmark 1988 were employed to solve the research
problems. The transitive verb patterns Kolln, 1990 were employed to find out all English finite transitive verbs in the first chapter of the bilingual book.
