CHAPTER V CONCLUSIONS, IMPLICATIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS
This chapter
consists of
the conclusions,
implications, and
recommendations. The conclusions deal with the major summary of this study. The implications provide a reference to the involvement of this study in English
education. The recommendations are given to future researchers to conduct further
studies on this topic and to language learners to make use of this study.
A. Conclusions
This research was a study of Anthony Reid’s
Australia and Indonesi
a’s
Struggle for Independence
O’Hare Reid, 2005. The book was written in English and translated into Indonesian. The study focused on the strategies for
translating transitive verbs found in the first chapter of the book. Two research problems were formulated in order to conduct the study. The first research
problem dealt with transitive verbs and their translation found in the book. The second research problem dealt with strategies used to translate the transitive verbs.
There were two major theories used in this study. The theories proposed by Kolln 1990 and Newmark 1988 were employed to solve the research
problems. The transitive verb patterns Kolln, 1990 were employed to find out all English finite transitive verbs in the first chapter of the bilingual book.
58 Newmark’s theory on translation strategies was employed to find out strategies to
translate the transitive verbs. Based on the research results, there were 170 transitive verbs found in the
first chapter of the book. The verbs were recognized as transitive because all of those verbs employed the transitive verb patterns. There were 146 transitive verbs

The verbs understand, have, and were not settled were taken as data representative to discuss. There were also 10

Based on the research findings, 14 verbs
employed this pattern. The verb saw and was elected were taken as the examples
of data. The second research problem dealt with translation strategies. The
identification of the strategies to translate the transitive verbs was based on the theory proposed by Newmark 1988. Not all strategies proposed by Newmark
1988 were found in this study. There were only five out of 21 strategies, namely literal translation, paraphrase, transposition, naturalization, and synonymy. Literal
strategy, as an example, was used to translate the verb understand into
mengerti
.
The verb had was paraphrased into
tidak suka
by considering the context in which
the verb occurred. The verb told in the active voice in the source language SL
was translated into target language TL

by employing
transposition strategy. Naturalization was used to translate the SL verb vetoed
