Lynette was wrong at all. After the incident when the fire burnt the forest, Lynette finally figured out that Josh’s family loved her and accepted her as the family
member. For the first time, she was not teetering on the outside edge of the family,
gauging their acceptance of her. For the first time, she had no doubt of her welcome. She was one of them. She belonged. p. 123
The quotation above shows us that Lynette’s need on belongingness has been fulfilled.
4. Esteem Needs
Maslow states that the most stable and therefore most healthy self-esteem is based on deserved respect from others rather than on external fame or celebrity
and unwarranted adulation p. 22. The esteem needs in this study is related to the beauty of the main
character. Lynette as the main character always admired her cousin beauty. She never realized her beauty.
The motivation is Lynette’s jealousy. She always felt that Debbi was prettier than Lynette.
Based on Maslow, healthy self-esteem is based on deserved respect from others. In this study, the respect came from Lynette’s uncle.
I see that. Shows how dumb the boy is. You’re twice the girl Debbi is, twice as pretty, too.
Josh The extravagant compliment amazed her. You know I’m not.
Sure you are. Just you wait. Soon as you hit fifteen, sixteen, Jeremy’s gonna have to stand in line to get a word with you. p. 60-61
The position of esteem needs in hierarchy of human needs is higher than love or belongingness needs. However, in Some Other Summer, this level of need
emerges preceding the level of love or belongingness needs. As what has been
stated in Chapter II, there are 7 exceptions in the hierarchy of human needs. In this analysis, one of them is used to help the analysis of this novel. The exceptions
used in this analysis is that there are some people in whom, for instance, self- esteem seems to be more important than love 1987, p. 26. In relation to this
explanation, Lynette’s self esteem led her to the decision not to wait for Jeremy’s love any more.
The hierarchy of prepotency in terms of consciously felt wants or desires rather than behavior. Based on the explanation given previously from
physiological needs until esteem needs, it can be seen that Lynette motivation to fulfill the needs in her life was based on the want or desire to fulfill the hunger of
something. The desire and want become the determinant of Lynette’s behavior. In simple way, it can be said that Lynette’s motivation comes from the desire to
fulfill the lack of particular need which then leads her to behave in proper way so that she could achieve the satisfaction of the fulfillment of her needs.
Based on Maslow explanation, there are five levels of hierarchy of human needs. There is no evidence in Some Other Summer that can lead into the analysis
on self-actualization level. In this study, there are only four levels of hierarchy of human needs that can be applied.
The explanation given in this section cannot be separated from the theory of characterization. Characterization and motivation are associated with human
needs. The lack of a particular need has strong impact on one’s behavior. A person who is lack of a particular need is always being motivated to fulfill that
need.

CHAPTER V CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTION
This chapter consists of two sections. They are conclusion and suggestion. The first section is conclusion. It contains the conclusion of the analysis of the
study. The second section in chapter five is suggestion. This section is divided into two sub-sections. They are suggestion for further research and for teaching
implementation.
A. Conclusion
There are two points that can be concluded as the results of this study. The first conclusion is the character of Lynette. The second is
Lynette’s motivation to fulfill the needs.
In the Some Other Summer, Lynette is described as a pretty young girl. She has no parents. Her father was disappeared when she was five and her mother was
drowned when she was seven. Lynette was an impatient girl. Her day was full of disturbance from her cousin, Eddie, and she always reacted to it badly.
Most of this story tells about Lynette’s love story. She loved someone named Jeremy. In this story, Lynette felt the hunger of love from Jeremy. Lynette
always felt the pain because of her love. Debbi who was Lynette’s cousin always tried to attract Jeremy’s attention. Everything that Debbi did to Jeremy made
Lynette jealous. Jealous is the symbol of the hunger of love. The hunger of love that she felt became her motivation to make a change in her life.
