CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION

This chapter contains of background of the study, statement of the problem, purpose of the study, significant of the study, scope and limitation, and definition of the key term. Each section is presented as follows:

1.1 Background of Study

Language takes an important role in human life. As a society member, we need a language to build a relationship with others. As a means of communication, language is not only used to give and get information but also arouse humans feeling. By using language, we can share our feeling such as happiness, sadness, disappointment, and anger to someone else or about something. At least, there are three kinds of language; spoken language, written language and silent language.

Written language also related to literature because literature is a part of language and it is usually in written form. According to Kennedy (1983), “literature is kind of art, usually written, that written that offers pleasure and illumination”. It means that literature as a kind of art which is interesting and giving enjoyment for the readers. By using literature, we can express our experience, thought, ideas and also feeling in beautiful language.

There are close relation between literature, language and society. The theme of literature usually based on real condition or problems in one society. According to Moody(1987) in Ade et all (2008) “states that literature springs from our in born love of telling a story, of arranging words in pleasing patterns, of

expressing in words some special aspects of our human experience”. One kind of literary works which is combined between written and spoken language is drama. Usually, the story of drama based on written form which is performed by the actor or actress in spoken language with dialogue on the stage. Drama develops every period based on the development of technology. One of the dramas which is interesting is film.

However people are never satisfied, they always try to develop something new in their life included literary works especially drama. They created a new literary works to get simpler and better, the product of the development of drama is called as movie or film. “Film is a movie that includes of motion picture which

has story that create the illusion of motion and continuity or a form of entertainment that enacts a story by a sequence of images giving the illusion of continuous movement”(Vassiliou 2006:2). Film become more popular than drama because the viewer could see it anywhere without sitting in front of the stage, such as drama, film also tells what happens in human life, fiction and non-fiction in the past or future like the real situation. It usually tells about culture, human’s feeling, love, sacrifice, humanity, struggle and sorrow.

Film is chosen as one kind of literary works that is interesting to be analyzed. When watching a film, viewers will not only get entertainment or education, but also can find exploration of human personality, problems and feeling. In film there are many characteristic of person and human behavior.

English Vinglish is one of films which tell about family, love and struggle of life in United States of America which is often described as a center of the

world. Sashi, the main character is a traditional Indian housewife living in Pune. In Indian culture, people are judged based on their knowledge of English, among other things. When Sashi spoke English, her own children and her husband (Adil Hussain) always laugh eventhough they think they are just being playful, constantly tease and make fun of her. When Sashi wants to go to United States of America to prepare for her niece’s wedding, she found that her English was worst. When she ordered a cup of coffee at coffee shop, the waiters did not understand about her order. In order to please her family and society to make life just a little easier, Sashi taken upon herself to enroll in an English speaking course. As she overcame her insecurity and masters a new language, she undergoes a transformation and even meets people with the power to forever change her life in the big city.

This film has topics to be analyzed and discussed like learning English. Learning English is the most interesting topic, because not always people who live in United States of America can speech English well. This, study attempts to discuss and analyze about the foreigner to learn English in United States of America in “English Vinglish” film by Rahul Nanda.

1.2 Statement of Problem

Based on the background of the study above, the research investigates the following problem:

1. What are the reasons of Sashi to learn English as a foreigner in the United States of America in English Vinglish film by Rahul Nanda?

2. What are the ways of Sashi to learn English as a foreigner in the United States of America in English Vinglish film by Rahul Nanda?

3. What is the result of Sashi to learn English as a foreigner in the United States of America in English Vinglish film by Rahul Nanda?

1.3 Purpose of Study

The purpose of the study is related to the problems of the study as follows:

1. To mention the reasons of Sashi to learn English as a foreigner in the United States of America.

2. To identify the ways of Sashi to learn English as a foreigner in the United States of America.

3. To know the result of Sashi to learn English as a foreigner in the United States of America.

1.4Significant of Study

The significance of the study is to explore to the readers in the appreciation and understand more literary studies especially film. This analysis can be stimulus for the readers especially who want to spend their leisure time to see the literary works as much as possible to get knowledge about life.

It is hoped that the readers will get the understanding about the content of English Vinglish film that focuses on the main character to learn English in United States of America, as well as the reader can overcome the same problem that may happen in their personal life.

1.5Scope and Limitation

This study is focused on the film English Vinglish. This study is focused on Sashi to learn English as a foreigner in the United States of America. For the limitation, it is focused on the reasons and the ways and of Sashi to learn English in United States of America.

1.6 Definition of Key Term

The definition of key terms in the research is aimed at avoiding misunderstanding the terms which exist in the research. The terms that are necessary to be defined as follows:

1. Analysis is trying to examine all parts of work in relation to the whole, select for examination one aspect or element or part that relates to the whole. (Jhonson, 2006)

2. Sashi is one of the main characters in English Vinglish Film

3. Foreigner is a person who comes from a foreign country; someone who does not owe allegiance to your country. (Oscar Wilde, 2004)

4. English Vinglish is the title of film that will be analyzed

5. Film is a movie that include of motion picture which has story that create the illusion of motion and continuity or a form of entertainment that enacts a story by a sequence of images giving the illusion of continuous movement. (Vassiliou, 2006:2)

7. Learn is process of which man and other animals are capable. (Gagne, 1988)
