1. INTRODUCTION 1.1 The Background of the Study

Literature is one of the art written works. Literature is a kind of writing which expresses and communicates thoughts, feeling and attitudes towards life. Yet many of the things which we know called literature which started life without being written things at all. Literature is supposed to be an imaginative creation which is far from factual truth. It has been widely known of its three large genres, such as novel, poetry and drama. Each of them has much in common though they are rather different in form. Novel is a narrative kind of fictitious writing and poetry is written down is aimed at presenting on the stage.

Taylor (1981:1) says, “Literature like other arts, is essentially an imaginative act, that is, an act of the writer’s imagination in selecting, ordering, and interpreting life experience.” Based on the statements mean that literature is a kind of art that usually tells, dramatizes, analyzes, expresses the emotions, and advocates the ideas where the imagination of the author ordering the experience of life into written or oral composition by offers the pleasure.

Novel reflects the transformation of the relationship between literature and art. Novel is an invented prose narrative of considerable a lenght and acertain complexity that deal imaginatively with human experience, usually through a connected sequence of events involving group of persons in a spesific setting.

Peck and Coyle (1998:102) say, “Most novel are concerned with ordinary people and their problems in the societis in which they find themselves.” Some of novels are fiction (unreal) and some of them are nonfiction (real) based on true

(15)

story. Today, novel has attracted interest and attention for many people, especially in teenagers, and other young generation. Novel entertains to read very much.

Novel consists of some elements to build the story, those are plot, character and characterization, setting, theme, and conflicts. Conflicts can make the story of the novel is more interesting. Besides, we can gain the moral lessons and life experiences through conflicts.

Tennyson (1967: 13-14) says that plot is used figuratively in literature to designate a plan or scheme of events in a story. Plot, thus, is the order of events that ties and unties the knot of conflict. Tennyson further adds: “In discussing plot, we customarily speak of a hero or protagonist in conflict with some opponent or antagonist. Both words derive from Greek “agon” meaning contest or conflict; it is a conflict that lies at the centre of the plot, and the heart of character motivation and speech.” From the explanation above, it can be understood that conflict is closely connected to person or persons. Only do men have conflicts to understand what should be resolved next. Person or persons are manifested as character in literature.

Horton and Chester (1976) state that conflict is a fundamental dynamic of human experience and interaction. It is the necessary struggle to balance concern for self with connections to others. Because pain, suffering and stress are deeply associated with our perpection of conflict. As we know, the conflict happens from an event of a character. Thus, the character who has conflict is caused any unsatified of what to be hoped. In other words, there is a wish which is not

(16)

fulfilled. For example, if protagonist is a poor girl, one conflict that might arise would be with nature, the poor itself.

Leading character is the centered individual very dominant. As an individual, the leading focused personality. Leading character emerged as long side the extraordinary character, a character that might be called prototypical. The prototypical character is not a stereotypical but a fully rounded, three dimensional characters.

There are many conflicts faced by the character in the novel For One More Day by Mitch Albom. Chick Benetto, which leads him to end his life. He faces many conflicts since he is very young. Since he gets many problems in his life, he can not hold his problems anymore. He feels depressed and wants to end his life. Chick Benetto can not face his problems patiently and wisely. He wants an easy way to end all of his problems. In the novel For One More Day, Mitch Albom gives many conflicts that people usually face.

In this paper, the writer would like to analyze the leading character’s conflict that can be traced in the novel written by Mitch Albom entitle For One More Day. That is included Chick’s internal and external conflicts. Since the conflicts represented in the story are quite fundamental and might happen in everyone’s personal life. The conflicts in the novel also show the examples of parental love and relationship in the family. This is the background as well as the reason why the writer focuses on the analyzing the conflicts of leading character in this paper.

(17)

(19)

2. REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE 2.1 Novel

There are three mayor genres of literature of poetry, prose and drama. In which each genre has its own characteristic. The word “novel” comes from the Italian, Novella, which means the new staff that small. The novel was originally developed in the region from other forms or narrative nonfiction, such as letters, biographies, and history. But with a shift in society and development time, the novel is not only based on data nonfiction, but also author of novel can change according to the desired imagination.

Taylor (1981:62) says that novel is a prose of work of quit some length and complexity which attempts to reflect and express something of the quality or value of human experience or conduct. Watson (1979:4) also says that a novel is a way learning about how things were or are-cognitive instrument; and those who distruct stories as evidence should consider how often in conversation we use them to make a points or answer questions. It means novel has many function to inform or make a points or in some subjects of distruct stories.

Novel can portray character and actions which represent of real life, dealing with human life, passion or ambition, desire, joy, sadness, feeling, thought, egoism and many related to human life.

In analyzing a novel, one should apply a series of steps in order to get better understanding about the novel, about the theme, plot, character and setting. All these elements built a qualified completeness of literary value. One of the

(20)

members of society, and the author’s distinctive view of how people are related to society and reflected in the presentation of every character.

A novel can be analyzed from several of point of view. It can be analyzed from the moral, social, and religious points of view. In this case, the writer is interested in discussing about the conflict that is dominant in this novel, which it will relate to moral and social life.

2.2 Character

Character is very important element in literary works such as novel, drama or even poems. The character can be human, or even animal. In a novel, the character usually dominated by human as the character, while the character in a novel has his/her own personality equal to human. The personality of the character will lead the character to act such emotional, behavioral, and all the logical things that deals with the problems which be faced by the character.

Therefore, the character of the novel mostly has a value of a human in real life. Roberts and Jacobs (1993:20) state, “Characters are the person present in dramatics of narrative work, who are interpreted by reader as being endowed with the moral and dispositional qualities that are expressed in what they say in the dialogue and what they do in action.”

In a novel, the character can be defined as a verbal representative of human being. Through their action, speech, description, and commentary, the authors portrayed characters who are worth caring about rooting for, an even loving, although there are also characters to be laughed, dislike or even hated, to quote Roberts (1993:131).

(21)

There can be simplified that the character in a novel is a description and a representation of a person qualities. It can be shown by the creation of the characters in a novel from their action, gesture, speech, and behavior. These term can be used by the readers to identify the characters in a novel, because the character in a novel has equal qualities as a person in real life. The attempt of the author describes the characters in a narrative work known as a characterization.

Burroway (2003:98) says, “Character as conflict, Rich characterization can be effectively (and quite consciously) achieved by producing a conflict between methods of presentation. A character can be directly revealed to us through appearence, speech, action, and thought. If you set one of these methods at odds with the others, then dramatic tension will be produced.”A character in a fiction may realize in a number of way. Characters have been constructed to make out an action. They words that they say and the comment that made by the creator depend on how they are presented.

2.3 Conflict

Conflict is one of social process which happened in our life which involves some of people or group of people which challenge each other which has inviolacy impact. Actually conflict comes from cooperation and competition. If competition appears in the middle of our life, maybe we can not find conflict. Conflict is must happened in our life. Conflict as a concept can help to explain many aspects of social life such as social disagreement, conflicts of interests and fights between individuals, groups or organizations. It is common that everyone

(22)

Conflict is not always has negative impact. With the conflict, we can get the best solution in every problem that happened in our life. Sociologically, cooperation and competition do not always work together. When cooperation and competition do not run well, the tendency of conflict happens is greater. Conflict is disappointed situation when the desired wants do not come true. Thus, conflict may have positive and negative aspect. It is positive if the conflict has been resolved in mutual way. And it will be negative it the conflict brings chaotic situation or even disaster.

Conflict is a necessary element of fictional literature. It is defined as the problem in any piece of literature and it is often classified according to the nature of the protagonist or antagonist. Conflict is actual or perceived opposition of needs, values and interests. Taylor (1981:7) says, “Conflicting judgement or values can also be brought to bear on the same character or event, and inapproprite (contrasting) settings or style employed. In this several ways dynamic tension are created.”

Roberts and Jacobs (1993: 1694) say, “Conflict is a struggle between opposing forces or the opposition between large groups of people, or between protagonist and larger forces such as natural objects, ideas, modes or behavior, public opinion”. Conflict is usually reflected or accompanied by the external and internal action. Conflict often forces characters to make a decision, to act or not to act, to behave according to a personal moral code or an external moral code, to compromise or to refuse, to grow and change or to remain more less or less the same. The point at which characters make this choice is usually the climatic

(23)

moment of the story. The effects or implications of this choice usually represent the conclusion.

Based on the discussion above, it can be concluded that the types of conflicts can be divided into two categories; they are the internal conflict and the external conflict.

The internal conflict is known as a struggle within one's self; a person must make some decision, overcome problem, quiet their temper, resist an urge, respond the idea, against a mode or behavior, and the like. This struggle that takes place in a character's mind called internal conflict. For example, a character may have to decide between right and wrong or between two solutions to a problem. Sometimes, the character must deal with his or her own mixed feelings or emotions.

The internal conflict is more commonly referred to as “man vs. self”, as the name suggests, it deals with a character who has to overcome and change something about his or her being that they are struggling against what they have in mind. Common types of internal conflicts include overcoming fears, will, and ego-flaws. These types of conflicts are often difficult to pin down and rely heavily on emotion.

On the other hand, the external conflict is the struggle of the character against the force from outside. There are several kinds of these external conflicts that the character might face. First, the character against another character, this is happened when the character is in conflict with another character, the most

(24)

antagonist character. Their conflict may take the shape of envy, hatred, anger, argument, avoidance, gossip, lies, fighting, and many other forms action. Second, the character against the society, this conflict is occured when the character have the opposing and different thinking about ideas, culture, modes, opinions from the most common people have in the society. Third, the character against the nature force, this conflict will be faced by the character when the character has to face such a natural phenomena or disaster (disease, fire, flood, cold, famine). For example, when the character has to endure the disaster from the natural force.

(25)

3. CONFLICT ANALYSIS

Conflict can be divided into two categories, they are internal conflict and external conflict. Internal conflict is a private war within oneself. It could be anything from deciding between two or more choices in deciding many things in our personal life. There is internal conflict between good and evil strength and weakness love and hate. Internal conflict refers to emotional or analytical struggles a character has due to his values, his role and society, or the company he finds with himself. Chick has many internal conflicts in his life. It start from the beginning of story, He was not invited by his daughter when she gets married. She only sent the wedding card and picture of her wedding.

Chick’s internal conflict can be seen when he decides to try a suicide in early October’s night. He can not face his problem anymore and it makes him become depressed. He still can not believe that a man like him who has ever been an athlete will try to end his life. It can be seen on the quotation below :

An one night, in early, I decided to kill myself. Maybe you’re surprised. Maybe you figure men like me, men who play in a World Series, can never sink as low as suicide because they always have, at the very least, that “dream came true” thing. (Albom, 2006:6)

Chick decides to end his life because he can not hold his problems anymore. He decides to go home to Pepperville Beach, in which he grows up. He is very confused before doing his action. He moves around his apartment. He walks in circles before deciding to go. Finally, he takes his gun and wants to end his life by using his gun. It can be seen in the quotation below:

(26)

actually stuffed the wedding photos down the garbage disposal. Somewhere in the middle of the night I decided to go home, meaning Pepperville Beach, the town where I grew up.

I stumbled down to the garage, found my car, put the gun in the glove compartment, threw a jacket in the backseat, maybe the front seat, or maybe the jacket was already there, I don’t know, and I streched into the street. (Albom:2006:11)

In his conflict, he has a difficult choice. If he takes a suicide, he does not face his problem anymore and will not meet. But if he does not do it, he will face his problems and he can not hold the problems. He feels that he does not has any better choice. Both of his choice will not take his happiness back.

Chick’s internal conflict can be seen when he meets his long-dead mother, who has passed away eight years ago. He does not believe he can meet his long-dead mother. It feels like it is crazy and unbelievable for the real life. It can be seen in the quotation below:

When I opened my eyes, I was surrounded by fallen pieces of the tree. Stones pressed into my stomach and chest. I lifted my chin, and this is what I saw: the baseball field of my youth, coming into the morning light, the two dugouts, the pitcher’s mound.

And my mother, who had been dead for years.

I don’t expect you to go with me here. It’s crazy, I know. You don’t see dead people. You don’t get visit. You don’t fall off of a water tower, miraculously alive despite your best attempt to kill yourself, and see your dearly departed mother holding her pocketbook on the third-base line. (Albom, 2006:24)

The failure of Chick in trying suicide makes him does not believe that he can still alive. It takes him to meet his mother again. The meeting between he and his mother is a strange event. He knows that his mother has passed away eight

(27)

years ago. He thinks that it is just his hallucination. It can be seen in the quotation below:

In that moment, I was so stunned by seeing my mother again that correcting it seem impossible. It was dream-like, and maybe part of me felt I was dreaming, I don’t know. If you’ve lost your mother, can you imagine seeing her right in from of you again, close enough to touch, to smell? I knew we had buried her. I remembered the funeral. I remembered shoveling a symbolic pile of dirt on her coffin. (Albom, 2006:49)

In that meeting Chick’s mother asks him to stay one more day with him. He still has trouble to think all of it. He does not know to explain the leap that he makes. Like as he can not speak about it. He does not know that it is a different about how to speak to dead people. He should make a choice whether he wants to stay or not with his mother. He does not want it to end but he knows that it is impossible to faced. It can be seen on the quotation below:

“It took a few seconds to find my voice, as if I were remembering the instructions on how to do it. How do you talk to the dead? Is there another set of words? A secret code?

“Mom,” I finally whispered. “This is imposible.” (Albom, 2006:55)

Chick feels that it is unbelievable to stay and spend the day with dead people. He wants together with his mom but he can not do it. If he follows his mother’s request, she will be happy. But if he does not want to follow her, she will regret. He wants to make his mother happy. He can not decide it. He still feels confused.

(28)

Chick’s internal conflict can be seen when he must choose his father’s question about being a mama’s boy or daddy’s boy. It can be seen in the quotation below :

My father once told me, “You can be a mama’s boy or a daddy’s boy. But you can’t be both.”

So I was a daddy’s boy. I mimicked his walk. I mimicked his deep, smoky laugh. I carried a baseball glove because he loved baseball, and I took every hardball he threw, even the ones that stung my hands so badly I thought I would scream. (Albom, 2006:21)

The quotation above shows that Chick chooses to be a daddy’s boy. He thinks that a boy should follow his father and a girl should follow her mother. So, since Chick chooses to be a daddy’s boy, Chick should follow his father’s command. He obeys his father’s rule, especially for being an profesional athlete as profesional baseball player. His father is ambitious in making Chick like what he wants. It can be seen in the quotation below :

And when it came to me, the only thing I had to worship was baseball. He was pitching to me before I could walk. He gave me a wooden bat before my mother let me use scissors. He said I could make the major leagues one day if I had “a plan”, and if I “stuck to the plan”.

And so, from the time I was seven years old, I scanned the newspaper for the box scores of my future employers. I kept a glove at my father’s liquor store in case he could steal a few minutes and throw to me in the parking lot. I even wore cleats to Sunday mass sometimes, because we left for American Legion games right after the final hymm. (Albom, 2006:31)

The quotation above shows that Chick tries to do the best for his father. Even his father ignores him, and never shows any appreciation to Chick’s achievement. Chick keeps on a planning higher target that he can achieve. Chick never has truly his father’s love in his life and he feels that it is so difficult to get

(29)

his father’s love. Chick has his own theory about his father’s love. It can be seen in the quotation below:

You see, here’s my theory : Kids chase the love that eludes them, and for me, that was my father’s love. He kept is tucked away, like papers in a briefcase. And I kept trying to get in there. (Albom, 2006:33)

The quotation above shows that it is the reason why Chick always obeys his father’s command, even his father never shows his love to him.

It is different with his mother who always loves him very much. Chick also loves her very much and never doubts his mother’s love. She loves Chick in best and worst time. It can be seen in the quotation below:

She wasn’t easy on me, don’t get me wrong. She smacked me. She scolded me. She punished me. But she loved me. She really did. She loved me falling off a swing set. She loved me stepping on her floors with muddy shoes. She loved me through vomit and snot and bloody knees. She loved me coming and going, at my worst and at my best. She had a bottomless well of love for me. (Albom, 2006:33)

However since he has choosen his father, the major priority in his life is his father than his mother. He obeys and follows everything that his father wants. He puts his mother in the second of the situation in his family. Although Chick sometimes has a dilemma for whom to be choosen between his father or his mother. He always fulfills his father wishes but his father never shows his love for him. On the other hand, he often ignores his mother because of his father but his mother keeps loving him without his request.

(30)

from being “daddy’s boy” to “mama’s boy”. He follows what his mother directs to him. Although he still has the passion to pursue his father. Playing baseball is his father’s passion while studying in the college is his mother’s passion. But Chick keeps on changing the focus of his life between them. It can be seen in the quotation below:

So, year after year, I pulled on new team uniforms—red socks, gray pants, blue tops, yellow caps—and each one felt like I was dressing for a visit. I split my adolescence between the pulpy smell of books, which was my mother’s passion, and the leathery smell of baseball gloves, which was my father’s. (Albom, 2006:112)

Chick keeps on playing baseball because when he plays the game he can picture his father and it can cure him from his lost. However, he also wants to follow his mother’s wish because since his father has gone, his mother always tries to fill up the missing part with her love. He always stays between them and it makes him weak. He does not even has his own self-determination. Thus, when his father suddenly comes back into his life and asks him to focus on baseball again, he experiences internal conflict whether he should continue his study in the college and make his mother proud of him or follow his father’s command.

In his second year in the college, he has taken part in several tournaments which include some potentials baseball recruiters based on his father’s urge. Until one day there is a talent-seeker who comes to them after the game and offers Chick to join their club. His father supports Chick and directly sets the plan for him. However, at that time Chick is still confused whether he has to follow his father’s plan or his mother’s. It can be seen in the quotation below:

(31)

What about school?”

He scratched his chin. “What about it?”.

I flashed on my mother’s face, walking me through the library. I tried not to think about it.

“The St. Louis Caaardinals,” my father drawled, long and slow. He ground his shoe into the grass. Then he actually grinned. I felt so proud I got goose bumps. He asked if I wanted a beer and I said yeah, and we went and had one together, as men do. (Albom, 2006:123)

At that time, Chick feels that he will be able to obtain his father’s love again with his achievement in baseball, but he also thinks about his mother. Chick still regards his mother, so he calls his mother to tell her about his meeting with his father. It can be seen in the quotation below:

“Dad came to a game.” I was on the pay phone in the dorm. This was well after my father’s first visit, but it had taken me that long to find the courage to tell her.

“Oh,” my mother finally said.

“By himself,”I quickly added. For some reason, that seemed important.

“Did you tell your sister?” “No.”

Another long silence.

“Don’t let anything affect your studying, Charley.” “I won’t.”

“That’s the most important thing.” “I know.”

“An education is everything, Charley. An education is how you’ll make something of yourself.”

I kept waiting for more. I kept waiting for some horrible story about some horrible thing. I kept waiting the way all children of divorce wait, for evidence to tip my scales, a tilt in the floor that made me choose one side over the other. (Albom, 2006:123-124)

In this situation, Chick can choose to follow his father’s command and pursue his dream to be a professional baseball player. On the other hand, he can also choose to ignore his father considering his deed to the family, continue his

(32)

chooses he has the same consequence that will make him disappointed with his choice.

However Chick decides to follow his father’s command and ignore his mother. Chasing his father’s love by his achievement is something that he really wants to do. Since he never gets his father’s love purely, at the same time he has already got his mother’s love without any condition set up by his mother. Chick has his own theory about his parent’s love. If his mother said it, he believes it.

Her only flaw was that she didn’t make me work for it. You see, here’s my theory: Kids chase the love that eludes them, and for me, that was my father’s love. He kept it tucked away, like papers in a briefcase. And I kept trying to get in there. (Albom, 2006:33)

The quotation above shows that how his mother loves Chick very much and Chick knows that. Although he knows that his mother has more pure love for him, Chick still puts his father’s command as the first priority in his life. Chick does it on purpose. He really wants to get his father’s love and he wills to sacrifice his mother for that. He ignores his mother and he treats his mother badly by making her very disappointed with his decision of leaving the college.

Chick’s internal conflict can be seen when his father requests him to playing baseball on his mother’s birthday. It can be seen in the quotation below:

“Chick, I was talking with Pete Garner.” “Pete Garner—”

(33)

“Yeah?”

I walked the phone away from the guests. As I cupped the receiver with my free hand, I glanced at two old women sitting on the couch, eating tuna salad from paper plates. “They got their Old Timers game, right?” my father said. “And Pete tells me Freedie Gonzalez bailed out. Some crap with his paperwork.

“I don’t get why—”

“It’s too late for them to make calls for a replacement. So I say to Pete, ‘Hey, Chick’s around.’ ”

“Dad. I’m not around.”

“You can be. He don’t know where you’re at.” “An Old Timers game?”

“So he says, ‘Oh, yeah? Chick is?’ And I say, “Yeah. In good shape, too—”

“Dad—”

“And so Pete says—” “Dad—”

I knew where this was going. I knew it immediately. The only person who had a harder time giving up my baseball career than me was my father. (Albom, 2006:157-158)

The quotation above shows that Chick’s father forces him to join the baseball game. Chick knows that his father is the only one who wants him to keep staying in his baseball career. But Chick ignores to do it because he thinks that he still has a job and he never gets exercise anymore. It can be seen in the quotation below :

“Why would they want me—” “That’s how these things—” “I haven’t swung a bat in—”

“—Happen, that’s how they happen, Chick. You get a foot in the door—”

“But I—”

“It’s who you know when these jobs open—” “Dad. I have a job.” (Albom, 2006:159)

Chick feels that his father will be more angry in hearing his statement about the ignoring of join the game. His father dismisses his current existence as

(34)

lost. However there are many things he wishes that he wants to ask to his father, but he ends the call and promises to call back him. Chick is dilemma and let himself to thinking about the conversation between his father. It can be seen in the quotation below:

There are a lot of things I wished I’d asked him. Instead, I said I’d call him back. I hung up the phone. And I let the oppoturnity my father had “finagled” dance around my head. (Albom, 2006:160)

Chick thinks about his father’s offering hardly and it makes him to agree to join the game. He has imagined his swing for the game. Chick lies to everybody there, especially to his mother who wants him to stay with her. He makes his untruth like he has a job meeting, instead there is not right. It can be seen in the quotation below :

I tried to focus. I tried to wrap my mother’s birthday party around me. But my father, a thief in many ways, had robbed me of my concentration.

I had to lie to everyone there. I wasn’t hard. I wore a pager for work, and I called it from the downstairs phone, then went upstairs quickly.

I faked the return phone call. Faked my dismay. Faked a story about having to fly to a client who could only do the meeting me on a Sunday, and wasn’t it awful? (Albom, 2006:160-161)

External conflict deals with the problems of the world. The story’s characters will struggle against the circumstances of external conflict, they may even suffer internal conflict resulting from the issues of external conflicts, but this is not as simple as internal conflict. External conflict occurs when characters are involved in the world’s woes, such issues as community, nature, government and other characters are all examples of external conflict. External conflict manifests

(35)

itself as man versus man, man versus nature, man versus society. Chick also has many external conflicts in his life. Such as conflict between he and his mother, between he and his ex-wife and between he and his sister.

Posey is Chick’s mother. She loves both of her children very much, Chick and Roberta. She always supports what Chick does. She keeps do the best for him and she thinks that all of it for the goodness for Chick’s life. But Chick does not realize the big affection that she has been given to him. Even he does not like if his mother forbids him to do something that he likes to do.

Chick’s external conflict with Posey can be seen when Posey asks her children, Chick and Roberta, to have some ice cream. It can be seen in the quotation below :

“How about some ice cream?” she said. “Yeah! Yeah!” my sister said.

“I have practice,” I said.

“Oh, why don’t you skip the practice, OK?”

“No!” I protested. “You can’t skip practice; you have to go.”

“Says who?”

“The coaches and everyone.”

“I wanna go! I want a cone!” Roberta said. “Just a fast ice cream?” my mother said. “Gaw! No! OK?” (Albom, 2006:83)

The quotation above shows that Chick does not go for a fast ice cream with his mother and sister, and keeps insisting on going to the practice without thinking about his mother feeling who can not have a time together with her children. Even Chick knows that his mother does not look well and his mother requests him to skip his practice for a minute, he keeps on his statement. So that,

(36)

Chick’s external conflict with Posey can be seen when Posey finds Chick’s cigarettes in his sock drawer when Chick is fourteen years old.It can be seen in the quotation below :

“Charley! We talked about this! I told you not to smoke! It’s the worst thing you can do! What’s the matter with you?”

“You’re a hypocrite!”

She stops. Her neck stiffens. “Don’t you use that word.” “You smoke! You’re a hypocrite!”

“Don’t you use that word!”

“Why not, Mom? You always want me to use big words in a sentence. There’s a sentence. You smoke. I can’t. My mother is a hypocrite!”(Albom, 2006:85)

The quotation above shows that Chick does not like the inhibition of his mother who does not like him to smoke. He feels that it is not fair and says that his mother is a hypocrite because his mother smokes too.

However his mother takes the cigarette away. Chick does not care about it and even say that he is sick to see how his mother dressing. It makes his mother is being more angry and slaps him for times. It can be seen in the quotation below:

“I’m taking these away,”she yells, grabbing the cigarettes. “And you are not going out, mister!”

“I don’t care!” I glare at her. “And why do you have to dress like that? You make me sick!”

“I what?” Now she is on me, slapping my face. “I WHAT? I make you” –slap!—“sick? I make”—slap!—“you SICK?”—slap!—“Is that what you”—slap!—“said?”— slap, slap!—“Is it? Is that what you THINK OF ME?” (Albom, 2006:85-85)

The conflict makes Chick running to the garage and stays away until the dark. His mother does not punish him. She even takes the cigarettes in his room. He finds his mother is crying in her room.

(37)

Roberta is Chick’s sister. She loves their mother very much. After their mother and father have divorced. She always asks their mother where their father is and what the reason their father leaves them.

Chick’s external conflict with Roberta is when Roberta tells Chick that she wants their mother should get married again because she feels that their mother still pretty and she does not want her mother to be alone all the time. It can be seen in the quotation below :

“I think Mom should get married again,” Roberta said. This was one time when I called home from college. “What are you talking about?”

“She’s still pretty. But nobody stays pretty forever. She’s not as thinas she used to be.”

“She doesn’t want to get married.” “How do you know?”

“She doesn’t need to get married, Roberta, OK?”

“If she doesn’t get somebody soon, nobody is gonna want her.”

“Stop it.”

“She wears a girdle now, Charley. I saw it.” “I don’t care, Roberta! God!”

“You think you’re so cool because you go to college.” “Cut it out.”

“Did you ever hear that song ‘Yummy, Yummy, Yummy? I thinkit’s so stupid. How come they play it all the time?” “Is she talking to you about getting married?”

“Maybe.”

“Roberta, I’m not kidding. What did she say?”

“Nothing, OK? But who knows where the hell Dad is. And Mom shouldn’t have to be by herself all the time.”

“Stop cursing,” I said.

“I can say whatever I want, Charley. You’re not my boss.” (Albom, 2006:126-127)

The quotation above shows that Chick does not agree with Roberta’s statement that wants their mother to get married again because she wants their

(38)

happiness. Chick keeps on his statement. And his sister keeps let their mother to married.

Chick’s external conflict with Roberta is when Roberta says the impolite word to their father who has left them for along time. It can be seen in the quotation below :

“Is she talking to you about getting married?” “Maybe.”

“Roberta, I’m not kidding. What did she say?”

“Nothing, OK? But who knows where the hell Dad is. And Mom shouldn’t have to be by herself all the time.”

“Stop cursing,” I said.

“I can say whatever I want, Charley. You’re not my boss.” (Albom, 2006:127)

The quotation above shows that Chick does not like his sister statement about their father. He thinks that his sister may not say it. He harshs her. Roberta is angry and feels that she can say everything she wants. Chick knows that Roberta does not know anything about their father. It can be seen in the quotation below:

She was fifteen. I was twenty. She had no idea about my father. I had seen him and talked to him.

(Albom, 2006:127)

The marriage of Catherine and Chick was broken because of the Chick’s silliness. After Chick leaves his family, he receives the wedding card from his daughter, Maria. The letter says that his daughter has already married and she does not invite Chick as his father.

Chick’s external conflict with Catherine is when he was not invited to their daughter’s wedding. He tries to ask all about it to Catherine. He decides to call her

(39)

and wants to know the reasons why he was not invited. It can be seen in quotation below :

“Why?” I said when she answered. “Chick?”

“Why?” I repeated. I’d had three days to lather up my anger, and that was all that came out. One word. “Why?” “Chick.” Her tone softened.

“I wasn’t even invited?”

“It was their idea. They thought it was . . .” “What? Safer? I was going to do something?” “I don’t know—”

“I’m a monster now? Is that it?” “Where are you?”

“I’m a monster?” “Stop.”

“I’m leaving.”

“Look, Chick, she’s not a kid anymore, and if—” “You couldn’t stand up for me?”

I heard he extale.

“Leaving where?” she said. “You couldn’t stand up for me?”

“I’m sorry. It’s complicated. There’s his family, too. And they—” (Albom, 2006:9-10)

The quotation above shows that Chick is disappointed about Catherine. He feels that Catherine does not tell the truth about their daughter wedding. She can not stand up for him and supports him to attending the wedding. She stands up more to groom’s family. In his conflict, He can not get the reason and thinks that it must be Catherine’s idea for not inviting him.

4. CONCLUSION AND SUGGGESTION 4.1 Conclusion

We can find some conflicts that happened to the leading character in Mitch Albom’s For One More Day. It can be the internal conflict and external conflict. This conflict usually happens because there is choice of life. The writer finds Chick’s internal conflict and external conflict. There are the internal conflict of Chick with himself and external conflict Chick with his mother, ex-wife, and sister.

Chick’s internal conflict can be rooted back to his childhood. It starts from his parents especially his father who asks him to choose to be “mama’s boy” or “daddy’s boy”. The question of his father has made him to choose to be a daddy’s boy. Although he knows that his mother loves him very much while his father does not do. It makes him a dilemma. He should decide to choose the action what he should do between whether he should follow his father’s wishes or his mother’s. He can not hold his past life problems. It leads him to end his life by trying suicide. However it does not success and makes him to meet his long dead mother who is impossible to meet. The external conflict happens between Chick and his mother, ex-wife and his sister. He faces the different conflict from the other. The external conflict between he and his mother are happened when he does not like the action that his mother does to him since his father leaves them. He considers what his mother does to him is fault. The external conflict between he and his ex-wife are happened when he does not accept his daughter’s decision who is not invited him to attending her wedding party. So he asks the reason for it

(41)

to his ex-wife. The external conflict between he and his sister are happened when he disagrees of his sister’s request who wants their mother to get married again. 4.2 Suggestion
