Try Out Instrument

1. Try Out Instrument

a. Validity

Based on the research design, the researcher prepared the instruments of collecting the data that is the students’ ability in writing words. Before the researcher went testing the sample of the research, the researcher validated the test with the internal validators, they were the researcher’s lecturer in writing subject (Madam Hidayati Daeli, S.Pd) and two English teachers (Mrs. Yuli Asnita Harefa, S.S and Mrs. Meytin F. Harefa S.Pd). The sheets of internal validation can be seen in Appendix 7a until 7c, the tests were stated valid.

Futhermore, the researcher did the try out instruments in SMP Negeri 1 Gido to get the validity and reliability of the test. It was done to seek external validation, reliability and item facility tests. The researcher asked students to fill the blank of descriptive text that was provided by the researcher. The researcher did the try out for both tests, they were the test for pretest and the test for posttest. Then, the researcher gave the students’ value based on the test they had done that was fill the in excercise test and substituted into the product moment formula to examine whether the items were valid or not.

Based on Appendix 10a and Appendix 10b in Table 10 and 11, it shows that r count > r Table (0.361 with n=30), it means that the result of the validity test computation from item number 1 to 20 of both the pre-test and the post-test were stated VALID.

b. Reliability

After the test was valid, the researcher continued to examine the reliability of the test. The result of the computation of the reliability by using KR-21 in Appendix 11a in Table 13 shows that the reliability score of the pre-test was r count >r Table . The result of r count was 0.817 and r Table with n=30 at the significant 5% (α = 0.05) was

0.361. It can be concluded that the pre-test was Reliable.

The result of the computation of reliability by using KR-21 in Appendix 11b Table 14 shows that the reliability score of the post-test was r count >r Table . The result of r count was 0.954 and r Table with n=30 at the significant 5% (α = 0.05) was 0.361. It can

be concluded that the post-test is Reliable.

c. Item Facility Analysis

Item facility analysis is used to find out the difficulty, medium, and easiness of the items. The result of the computation of Item Facility (IF) analysis of pre-test was the difficult items of the test were 2 (10%), medium items of the test were 8 (40%) and easy items of the test were 10 (50%). It can be seen in Appendix 12a, Table 15. The result of the computation of Item Facility (IF) analysis of post-test was the difficult items of the test was 2 (10%), medium items of the test were 11 (50%) Item facility analysis is used to find out the difficulty, medium, and easiness of the items.
