B. The Causes Underlying the Errors

1. Data Presentation

After figuring out the errors that the participant made in their test, it is important to know the causes of the errors they committed in the test and the causes they had not really mastered the English phrasal verbs. Thus, to discover the causes why the students made errors in using the phrasal verbs, the researcher conducted semi-structured interview. The researcher chose five students who had low scores in the test to be interviewed. Then, during the interview, the researcher used Indonesian language in order to make the interviewees more convenient to express their opinion. The interviews were also recorded and transcribed in order to make it easier to analyze the findings. The questions and the information obtained in the interviews are summarized in Table 4.11. Do you realize that you still made some errors in using phrasal verbs? • Most of them stated that they did realize it. • One student hesitated and stated that it was confusing so he did not know whether it was correct or not. b. In your opinion, why did you make these errors? • One student admitted that he lacked concentration because of the test and the time limitation. • Some students stated that they had learnt it before but they forgot it. • All this time, they do not really try to learn and understand it deeply. • Some of them got confused because there is no fix rules to determine which particle to follow which verb. Moreover, the position of particle was also confusing. • They stated that they also got confused because a verb if added by a new particle will cause a new meaning. Thus, the meaning of phrasal verbs was also confusing. 4 Do you have any suggestion for the teacherslecturers related to the teaching of the English phrasal verbs? • Most of them said that the lecturers need to give them further explanation about phrasal verbs, not only giving them exercises. • One student argued that the lecturers have taught them well enough. For the further explanation about the phrasal verbs, the students indeed should learn them by themselves. 70
