CHAPTER V CONCLUSIONS AND SUGGESTIONS

This chapter consists of two main parts. The first part deals with the conclusions drawn by the researcher from the research results and the data analysis. The second part then presents some suggestions to the lecturers, the students, and the future researchers.

A. Conclusions

The research was aimed to find out the mastery of phrasal verbs, especially the separable and the inseparable phrasal verbs, among the sixth semester students of ELESP of Sanata Dharma University. There were two research questions which were answered in the research. They were 1 How well have the sixth semester students of ELESP mastered two types of the English Phrasal Verbs, the separable and the inseparable phrasal verbs? and 2 What are the possible causes of the students’ errors in using the separable and the inseparable phrasal verbs? In order to answer those research questions, the researcher employed two kinds of instruments. They were a test and an interview. To answer the first research question, the researcher administered a test which was divided into three parts and consisted of forty 40 items. The errors committed by the students in each part of the test were discussed further. In part I, in which they should associate the verbs with corresponding particles and put the particles in correct positions, the errors were mostly caused by associating the 75 verbs with wrong particles. Although they associated the verbs with wrong particles, they mostly could put the particle in the right positions. Then, mostly errors in this part appeared in the items which consisted of the inseparable phrasal verbs. Then, in part II, which had fewer errors than the other parts, most of the students’ errors came from the items with the inseparable phrasal verbs. Different from the first and the second, the last part of the test had different result. Most of the errors merely came from the items with the separable phrasal verbs which had obligatory separation. From the errors committed by the students in using the phrasal verbs, it could be seen that the students were quite familiar to the separable phrasal verbs since in part I and II they could put the corresponding particles in the correct positions. It showed that they knew the rules of optional and obligatory separation of the phrasal verbs. However, they were not familiar to the inseparable phrasal verbs. It could be seen from the results of the test which show that most of the errors came from the inseparable phrasal verbs. Then, based on the results of the test, the mean score was 58.8. This score has reached 56 of the maximum score, which is the minimum standard of mastery. In other words, the students had mastered the English phrasal verbs, particularly the separable and the inseparable phrasal verbs. However, according to the scoring category, this score belongs to the category of sufficient which means that their mastery was not really good yet. The interview, which was conducted to answer the second research questions, figured out that the lack of knowledge and the lack of concentration 76 because of time limitation were the main causes for the errors. The students had ever learnt about phrasal verbs, but since the students did not learn about phrasal verbs deeply and did not practiced, they did not know exactly what phrasal verbs are and they did not know about the types of phrasal verbs. Even though in doing the test they indeed seemed to know the forms and the rules of using the separable and the inseparable phrasal verbs, while being interviewed they admitted that they did not know the meaning of the forms of the separable and the inseparable phrasal verbs. Further, they admitted that they still found difficulties in using those forms, whether the verbs should be separated or not, especially when they met the inseparable phrasal verbs. Then, they also admitted that they could not concentrate well because of the time limitation. They felt nervous to decide the correct answer then finally they made errors. Further, based on the researcher’s observation, they were not able to concentrate well because of the late comers that distracted their attention to the test. In conclusion, although the students had learnt about phrasal verbs since Senior High School, the results of the test show that they still found difficulties in using two types of phrasal verbs, the separable and the inseparable phrasal verbs. The students often made fatal errors such as separating the inseparable phrasal verbs. This implied that the students had not had enough knowledge of the English phrasal verbs. Above all, their mastery of the English phrasal verbs can be said sufficient. 77
