ABSTRACT
This report entitled The Translation of the text that describing the picture
inside the brochure by using gerund. The writer uses four brochures that mostly
related to hydrology term as the source of data in his analysis.The writer uses descriptive method to analyze the data. The writer uses three steps when collecting the data for the job training report, first step is by collecting the brochure, second step is by making an observation on the text that describe the activity or process, third step is by making an explanation about how the text can describe the picture effectively.
During the job training, there were several problems found related to my responsibility. They are, looking for the appropriate lexical-equivalent for the picture, making a simple and specific text translation that is appropriate with the picture, understanding the technical term which is different compare with commonly used term. The solutions used to solve the problems are by looking from LITBANG PUSAIR guide book, and using brochure with English form to understand the common technical term in brochure or leaflet that related with hydrology. The writers also browse from reliable website with hydrology term on internet.
The result of this report indicates that, to translate the text that describe the activitiy inside the picture effectively, gerund can be used as one of many ways.

Laporan ini berjudul The Translation of the text that describing thepicture inside the brochure by using gerund. Penulis menggunakan empat brosur
yang kebanyakan berhubungan dengan istilah hidrologi sebagai sumber data
dalam analisisnya.Penulis menggunakan metode deskriptif untuk menganalisa data. Penulis
menggunakan tiga langkah sewaktu mengumpulkan data untuk laporan PKL,
langkah pertama adalah mengumpulkan brosur, langkah kedua adalah dengan
pengamatan kepada text yang mendeskripsikan aktivitas atau proses, langkah
ketiga adalah dengan membuat penjelasan tentang bagaimana text tersebut
menjelaskan gambar secara efektif.Ada beberapa masalah yang dijumpai selama melakukan PKL yang
berhubungan dengan tanggung jawab penulis. Masalah yang dihadapi penulis
adalah mencari padanan kata yang sesuai dengan apa yang digambarkan,
membuat terjemahan text yang simple dan akurat yang sesuai dengan gambar,
memahami istilah teknik yang berbeda dengan istilah-istilah pada umumnya.
Solusi yang dilakukan untuk mengatasi masalah adalah dengan mencari dari
kamus, menggunakan gerund untuk membuat kalimat efektif yang menjelaskan
gambar, menggunakan brosur yang berbahasa inggris untuk lebih memahami
istilah teknik yang biasa digunakan dalam brosur yang berhubungan dengan
hidrologi, serta menggunakan internet dalam mencari arti dari istilah teknik yang
ditemui dalam penerjemahan.Hasil laporan ini mengindikasikan bawah, penggunaan gerund dapat
digunakan dengan berbagai cara, untuk menerjemahkan teks yang menjelaskan

CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION1.1. Background
“Experience is the best teacher”. The meaning of this old proverb is that you can get all the lesson that you need but without experience to apply your lesson all of it would not be usefull. The writer, as student, has a responsibility to polish his skill therefore the writer does the job training. The implementation of job training is to provide a chance for the students to apply all the skills they get in the class and to apply the experience on how to work responsibly and full of discipline. Finally, through the Job Training, the writer can learn how to handle work load and can adapt with work environment situation.
The report is entitled “The translation on the text that desribe the picture
inside brochure by using gerund”. The reason why the writer choses this topic
because gerund is based on a verb and therefore expresses action or a state of being. This is interesting because we can see how gerund can ease readers in understanding text brochures.
The writer chooses Pusat Litbang Sumber Daya Air because; first, the company has program in international communication related with the use of English languange, therefore, I can practice, polish and apply my English languange skill. Second, the company needs a translator for the program.

1.2. Objectives
1. The writer writes the report in order to confirm that the job training was done responsibly.
2. The application of all the lesson that writer get from the class in order to finish the task given during the job training.
1.3 Method
The writer uses three steps when collecting the data for the job training report, first step is by collecting the brochure, second step is by making an observation on the text that describe the activity or process, third step is by making an explanation about how the text can describe the picture effectively. The writer uses descriptive method to analyze the data. According to Travers (1978) “Descriptive method is to describe the nature of situation as it exist at the time of the study and to explore the causes of particular phenomena”.
1.4 Place and Time of Job Training
The writer took the job training in Pusat Litbang Sumber Daya Air (PUSAIR) which is located at Jalan Ir. H. Juanda No. 193 Bandung. The job

training took place for approximately a month, beginning from 3 until 30 August, 2010. The time of the job is from 9 to 11 o’clock.
CHAPTER II THE GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE COMPANY
2.1 General Description
LITBANG PUSAIR established in 1936 by the dutch. The first name of this company is Departement Verheer en Waterstaat. Today this company is under the Ministry of Public Works. This company generally related to the development of water resources for public services. The activities of LITBANG PUSAIR are mainly related with:
1. Providing expertise to support the availability of reliable water resources infrastructure and the development of research for water resources.
2. Evaluation and analysis of water resources research and development products.
3. Study on the application of water resources technology.
4. Collecting and processing water resources data.
5. Implementation of quality testing and preparation of technical advices and services.
There are four division in LITBANG PUSAIR : 1. Standard and Product Dissemination Division.
2. Development of Expertised and Infrastructure R&D Division.
3. Programming and Cooporation Division.
4. Administration Division.

The writer worked as a translator in Sub Division, Development & Corporation which is part of Programming and Cooporation Division. The activities of this Sub division is related with dissemination of research development through scientific forum, scientific publications, exhibitions and cooperation with other company related with the development of water resource.
The writer activities during the job training is to translate the brochure and leaflet from English to Indonesia or vice versa for the exhibition of water research and development.
CHAPTER III THE DESCRIPTION OF ACTIVITIES
3.1 Job Position and Coordination
3.1.1 Job Position
The writer was given a job position as a translator at cooperating sub division which is led by Programming and Cooperation Division. This division has a project to use two kind of languange for their brochure, English and Indonesian language or vice versa.
3.1.2 Coordination
In Pusat Litbang Sumber Daya Air, the writer coordinated with the manager of Cooperating sub division who had the specification of responsibility as follows:
1. Dra. Rita Eddy a. Job Position : Manager of Cooperating sub Division.
b. Job Responsibility : Giving work and guide the member of the job training.
In LITBANG PUSAIR, the writer was guided by Mrs Rita Eddy. She gives task to the writer to translate brochure and leaflet in English to Indonesia or vice versa. This job must be done during the job training. After finishing the task, the writer must bring his translation to Mrs Rita Eddy for reviewing. She will give comment, and advice based on the result.

3.2 Responsibility
LITBANG PUSAIR has a program to held an exhibition in January 2011, The writer was given responsibility to translate the booklet and poster that are going to be published and distributed during the exhibition.The writer focuses on translating the brochure from Indonesian language to English language.
3.2 ‘The Translation of the text that describing the picture inside the
brochure by using gerund’.3.3.1 Explanation
During his job training the writer was given task to translate several brochures from Indonesian languange to English languange or vice versa. When I was given my first assignment, my instructor also tells me several things about translating brochure. The most important part when translating brochures is the choice of word and languange that I use must be simple, effective, and straight-forward. In brochure there are pictures that act as a visual guide to the reader, usually this picture also include short text to describe the picture. Before translating the texts that describe the picture, I had to analyze them. The writer used two steps when analyzing the text. First, I must understand the meaning of each word and then understand the context of the text in order to get a good translation. I use
www.free-dictionary.com from internet and Oxford dictionary to help me
understand the meaning of each word. The short texts that describe picture also have significant information. When trying to get effective and straight-forward

languange for this text, the writer decides to use gerund. Examples below are the pictures that the writer tries to translate :
Data 1 :
This brochure is about how to construct GFRP as one of the promising solutions in water distribution especially in the tertiary units. This picture is describing about an activity of a person to put a paint layer on top of the iron gate.

In instances, when I translate Proses untuk melapisi pintu besi into the target language, I can use word-for-word to translate it into Process to cover the
iron gate which is an infinitive form where there is a –to infinitive before the verb.
The writer tries to simplify the word even more because I was instructed to make the translation as efective as possible and also because the space provided in brochure to write down the text are not sufficient. These pictures describe about

activity so I must find the words that show this description. In this case the word would be process to cover.
When the writer sees from www.free-dictionary.com the meaning of: Process : a series of action bringing about a result Cover : place something upon or over to protect or conceal.
These phrases combine into:
Process to cover is a series of action to put layer of material covering something
else.Then the writer tries to make the word simple by using reduction to the text by omitting the word process to, so that the phrase changes into cover the
iron gate and the word cover is a verb.
This is still unacceptable because this text is clearly a guide that describes about the activity inside the picture while the meaning of cover the iron gate is like telling the reader to do it instead of describing the activity inside the picture. Therefore, the writer can use gerund which is a verb form to make it specific. The use of gerund in this case is by adding –ing to the word cover that becomes
covering. The meaning of covering is now changing into a series of action to
place something upon or over protect or conceal, the writer can replace the word
Process to cover with covering and combine it with iron gate that becomes
covering the iron gate.9 Data 2 :
This is the second picture from GFRP WATER GATE that the writer translates. This picture is describing about an activity of a person to weld the key on iron gate construction.

rangka besi” into the target language, the writer can use word-for-word to
translate it into “Process to weld the key on iron frame into the target language, which is an infinitive form but the writer still need to understand the context so that the writer can use an effective word without altering the meaning from the original text. This picture describes about an activity, so the writer must find the word that show this description. In this case the word would be process to weld. When the writer sees from www.free-dictionary.com the meaning of:
Process : a series of action bringing about a result Weld : joint two metal parts by applying heat.
These phrases combine into:
Process to weld the key on iron frame is a series of action to joint two metal parts
by applying heat.10
Then the writer tries to make the phrase simple by using reduction to the text by ommiting the word process to, so that the pharase changes into weld the
key on iron frame and the word weld is a verb.
This is still unacceptable because this text is clearly a guide that describes about the activity inside the picture while the meaning of weld the key on iron
frame is like telling the reader to do it instead of describing the activity inside the
picture. Therefore, the writer can use gerund which is a verb form to make it specific. The use of gerund in this case is by adding –ing to the word weld that becomes welding. The meaning of welding is now changing into a series of action
to joint parts by applying heat, so the writer can replace the word Process to weld
with welding and combine it with the key on iron frame that becomes welding the key on iron frame.

This is the Second brochure that the writer translates. This brochure is about the use of fiber glass reinforced cement to replace iron as a material to construct water gate for water distribution to meet water requirement for plant growth in the tertiary unit. This picture is describing about an activity of a person to strengthen the iron gate construction.

This is the fourth brochure that the writer translates, this brochure is about Prototipe SARASS. This picture is describing about an activity of a person to put coarse and zeolit inside the infrastructure.

From the picture and the text we can clearly see the activity that is occured. The writer must find the word that show this description. In this case the word would be Install. When the writer sees from www.free-dictionary.com the meaning of:
Install : The state of being installed These phrase combine into:
Install the coarse and zeolit is the state of installing coarse and zeolit and the
word install is a verb.16
This is still unacceptable because this text is clearly a guide that describes about the activity inside the picture while the meaning of install is like telling the reader to do it instead of describing the picture. In order to describe the activity more specific, the writer uses gerund which is a verb form. The use of gerund in this case is by adding –ing to the word install that becomes installing. The meaning of installing is now changing into The state of being installed, so the writer can replace the word Install with Instaling and combine it with coarse and zeolith that becomes Installing the coarse and zeolith.
3.4 Problem and Solution
During his job training the writer found difficulties in translating a text that describe picture inside brochure and translate it into an effective text without altering the meaning. The writer confused on how to find the most suitable word from source languange to target languange, to make a simple and effective text that must coherence with the picture, and to understand the technical term which is different compared with the commonly used terms.
In order to cope with the problem, the writer found the solution by understanding the context of the text and to use the dictionary to find the word on the target languange with suitable meaning with the word on the source languange. The writer uses gerund to make the text simple but still have specific meaning when describing a picture. When trying to understand the technical term, the writer uses guide book from LITBANG PUSAIR and uses English brochure to understand the common technical terms in brochure or leaflet that

related with hydrology. In addition, to search those terms, the writer also browses from reliable website with hydrology terms on internet.
CHAPTER IV CONCLUSIONS AND SUGGESTIONS
4.1 Conclusion
The conclusion of this report tells you about the activities of the job training which the writer did at LITBANG PUSAIR addressed at Ir. H. Juanda Street No. 193 Bandung. The writer was assigned to Sub Division, Development & Corporation which is part of Programming and Cooporation Division as a translator. This sub division activities are to make scientific forum, scientific publications, exhibitions, and cooperation with local or foreign company. The writer task is to translate brochure and leaflet for promoting media about the company research and development.
This brochure and leaflet were in Bahasa Indonesia which is translated into English for English speaking readers. The problems that the writer found are finding the most suitable word, making a simple and effective text that must coherence with the picture, and understanding the technical terms which are different compare with the commonly used terms. The solutions for this problems are by understanding the context of the text and to use the dictionary to find the most suitable word that is acceptable by the target languange. The writer also uses gerund to make the text simple and effective but still coherence with the picture.
Furthermore, the writer also uses guide book from LITBANG PUSAIR, English brochure and leaflet as comparation, and understands the general terms that are usually used in technical brochure and leaflet. Next, the use of internet is also

helpfull in finding data about technical term from reliable website that is related to technical hydrology. The goal of this report is to share about how gerund can be used to describe a picture more specific.
4.2 Suggestion
After conducting the job training, the writer suggestions are as follow:
4.2.1 Faculty
The faculty should make cooperation and relation with companies, so that the student can easily get a place in a company.
4.2.2 English Department
English Department should give more information and reference about list of institution or company for the student.
4.2.3 Students
Student need to find as much as information they can get from every resource such as internet, books, magazine to help them during job training. In most case during the job training, the english literary student was positioned as a translator so the more you know about English word the better it would be.
