Introduction ANTISOCIAL PERSONALITY DISORDER EXPERIENCED BY IGOR MALEV, THE MAIN CHARACTER IN PAULO COELHO’S Antisocial Personality Disorder Experienced by Igor Malev, The Main Character In Paulo Coelho’s Novel The Winner Stands Alone(2009): An Abnorma

Cannes Film Festival. Ewa left Igor to married Hamid Hussein, a famous fashion designer. Of course Ewa will join the Festival as the wife of the popular haute-couture. Through the day in the Festival he can accomplish what he planned six months before. He would do anything to make his dream come true. He possessed abundant money and brain to realize his will. He has done a series of assasination to several people during 24 hours in the Cannes Festival. He killed the victims randomly. He suffocates a street vendor on a park bench by employing the Russian martial art of Sambo, and he shoots a film distributor with a poison needle. Igor’s wealth gives him access to the curare he puts on the needle’s tip and to other specialized weapons such as the hermetically sealed envelope filled with hydrogen cyanide he passes along to unsuspecting recipient. Igor, who seems confuse good and evil, thinks that by murdering somebody, Ewa, his ex-wife will get the message and will consider back to him again. He did unhuman deed without any feeling of guilt. However, evil has covered him. He thinks that the people he killed will be much thank to him because he already set them free from the burden they had. From that personality side, the writer curious about a person who has unbalanced mental like Igor Malev, and repeatedly read the novel. The writer is interested in exploring what is happening with Igor Malev, especially the personality disorder he possesed and its manifestations. That’s why the writer will analyze the novel, “The Winner Stands Alone” by using psychological approach and abnormal psychology definitely. The objectives of the study are the following; to analyze the novel based on Abnormal Psychology.

B. Research Methodology

In this research, the writer uses a qualitative research. It is library research while data sources are using literary data. It aims to analyze novel using psychological approach especially abnormal psychology. The steps to conduct the research are 1 determining the type of the study,is the words, phrases, and sentences in The Winner Stands Alone 2009 by Paulo Coelho, 2 determining the object of the study, 3 determining data and data source, 4 determining the tehnique of data collection, and 5 determining the technique of data analysis.

C. Finding and Discussion

1. Finding

The character of Igor Malev indicates that he has personality disorder according to both DSM-IV TR and ICD 10, especially antisocial personality or people say ‘psychopath’. Although he does not experience all the symptom as mentioned, the experts claimed that he has at least having three of the characters. a. According to DSM–IV TR, 2000 Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders There is a pervasive pattern of disregard for and violation of the rights of others occurring since age 15 years, as indicated by three or more of the following: 1 Deception, as indicated by repeatedly lying, use of aliases, or conning others for personal profit or pleasure. When he came to Cannes, he used a fake name and passport, so nobody would recognize him. He used alias in order to be not known by other people. Igor Malev told to Gabriela and Jasmine that his name was Gunther and explained that he was a German industrialist specializing in heavy machinery and had been invited there by friends. p.296. It was obviously shown that Igor Malev was a manipulative man. He did not want his real identity to be known by other people. 2 Failure to conform to social norms with respect to lawful behaviors as indicated by repeatedly performing acts that are grounds for arrest. In the case of Igor Malev, it is obviously that he was a man with mental disturbance. He killed many people. It shows that he neglected other’s rights. “No one, absolutely no one, can threaten our privacy. We’ve spent long enough creating a fairer, more humane society. Anyone who fails to respect our moments of freedom should be removed in such a way that they’ll never even consider coming back.”p.91 3 Lack of remorse Igor Malev had no feeling guilty at all when he killed people. Despite of being guilty or sorry what had he done, he thought that he did the right thing. When he have romantic dinner in Irkskuts, Siberia with his wife, Ewa, there was a beggar who according to him was annoying. Without Ewa’s consideration he killed the man. He said “I saved him from a filthy, hopeless life in those freezing winters, with his body being slowly destroyed by booze. I let his soul depart toward the light because the moment he came into that restaurant to destroy our happiness, I knew that his spirit was inhabited by the Evil One.” p.94 He’s a good man, and when ever he’s been obliged to behave harshly, it has been in the name of a greater cause: serving his country, saving the marginalized from unnecessary suffering. P.201 4 The individual is at least age 18 years. Someone can be characterized as a person with antisocial personality disorder whenever he or she is at least 18 years old. In the novel, Paolo Coelho often explained the condition of Igor Malev and mentioned his age, that is forty years old. He has just turned forty, is in good physical shape, and, according to his annual checkup, has no health problems. P.9
