B. Nature of Data
In order to answer the research questions on the effectiveness of cooperative learning to enhance t
he participants‘ communicative competence as well as to boost their learning empowerment, the research has several types of
data, namely: numerical from students‘ written reflection, field notes from observation, document from students‘ writing project, and interview transcript
from the video recording. The first data relate
with the participants‘ communicative competence. The data were taken from their authentic tasks in the form of written project through
the creation of wall magazine and in the form of oral interview in which the researcher was able to see how they comprehended and answered the questions.
Beside taken from the authentic tasks, the data were also obtained from the participants‘ reflective writing in which some questions relate with how they were
able to interact or communicate using the target language with their friends during the learning through cooperative learning activities.
The second data relate with the participa nts‘ learning empowerment. It
was taken from the observation through multiple observers who were conducted by the class teacher and a text-book writer who has experiences in dealing with
English for young learners. It wa s also taken from the students‘ written reflection.
C. Research Setting and Participants
This action research project involved participants enrolling in the English community at a non-school setting that the researcher established. The total
48 number of the students was around twenty five; seventeen of them came from
public school which is mostly occupied by those of middle to low social status while eight of them studied in another public school which was based on Islamic
values. All of them however come from the same district called Minomartani which is divided into some smaller areas namely Plosokuning 1, Plosokuning 2,
Plosokuning 3, Plosokuning 4, Plosokuning 5, and Tiyasan . They live separately
in those various small areas. There were nine females participating in the project. The main goal of gathering the young learners is to help the participants to be able
to use English communicatively. During the research, however, the number of the participants was
decreasing because many of them participated in some religious activities conducted at around the same time with the schedule in which they usually have
English class in the non-school setting. The total number of the participants in the study is nine students of elementary schools. The study was conducted in a non-
school setting where the participants gathered and practiced English every Saturday for about one and a half hours to two hours.
