- José: Hello everyone, we are going to discuss the “Art of Parenting”.

  • Pilar: We have just prepared an interesting exposition about how to be good parents. (JOKE) Certainly I´m not the most appropriate person to talk about this, because I don´t have children.
  • José: The first cry of your new born child heralds the beginning of a new learning experience.

You are now responsible for a living, breathing creature, which is dependent on you for everything, and not only for the first few years but for ever!

  • Pilar: Even though I don’t have any children of my own, I have however a huge experience working with teenagers. Lots of times we have to deal with several kinds of problems regarding the education of our teenagers, well, we´re going to explain what sort of situations we could find, then we´ll propose some personal advice and to conclude/ finally we´ll explain the key words, because we know that could actually be the only thing that you are interested in. (JOKE)
  • Pilar: Normally, teenagers are usually rebel and they have a tendency not to respect the rules, they usually think that it´s a way to be more popular in among their firends. On the other hand, young people don´t usually understand how important taking responsibility for/accepting their mistakes can be, that is, to be a responsible person. Also, it´s very common that teenagers only think in themselves, egocentrism is another problem we´d like to speak about, due to egocentrism many adolescent do not respect other people.

There will be many challenges ahead for the new parent from sleepless nights to boyfriend angst, from influences outside your control, for example, media, peer pressure. (peer pressure, that is, pressure from other children their own age)

  • José: Each person deals with this in their own way, some parents prefer strict guidelines and rules while others prefers a more laid back approach.

 If you are too strict your children could see you as a monster, they will do everything that you order them, but but they might not learn anything. If you are too laid back your children could not learn the discipline which everyone needs to be successful these days.

  • Pilar: Frequently, parents need qualities similar to a ¿superhero? (JOKE) (they have to be a teacher, psychologist, nurse, cook and so on) but the main quality that parents need is PATIENCE. Parents have to learn how to keep calm/kee their hair on and try to solve the problems speaking with their children; under no circumstances should they use violence. Also, there are some parents who, without actually meaning to, overprotect their children, which can be really detrimental for their education. Providing a good education to your children is the key for their fut
  • - José: Unfortunately there is no instruction book, so you have to learn as you go along. Learn from your mistakes and don’t take it too seriously!!! - Both: A sense of humour is vital!!! - Both: That’s all. Bye
