f. FTA-oriented Bald-on-record Usage
The last strategy of bald on-record strategy used is orientated to face called as FTA-oriented bald-on-record usage. It is when the hearer is being cautious to
the possible threat heshe makes directed to the speaker’s face and the speaker notices or is aware of it. Hence, the speaker preemptively invites or lets himher to
impose it. It can be seen in datum number 5 in which Melvin uses this strategy in welcoming. It is happened when he already started the class and is going to begin
the debate tryout. Suddenly, James who comes late knocks the door. As a consequence, James’ action poses threat to Melvin’s negative face or his wants to
not to be imposed. In this case, James tries to be careful in impinging Melvin’s negative face. However, Melvin does not mind and lets James do it. He lets him to
come in the class. James Farmer. Jr.
: knocking Melvin B. Tolson
: Come on in. Now that Mr. Farmer has joined us,
we can begin. Sit down Mr. Farmer. Not right there. Over there.
James Farmer. Jr. : Yes, sir.
Datum number 5 Melvin performs the invitation in bald on record or in imperative form
since he is aware that the risk of James’ refusal is not great. On the other hand, if the risk is seemingly great he will probably use another strategy rather than to go
on record baldly. In a response to this, James receives the invitation and is not reluctant to impinge Melvin’s negative face by coming in the class.

g. Notice, Attend to Hearer
` To notice or attend to the hearers’ interest is one way that Melvin uses to
perform positive politeness strategy. In the total, he performs the strategy twice; the first is directed to James Farmer Jr., while the other is directed to all of his
students. The strategy used by him is to convey his admiration to his students. Also, it is used to show that he approve their ability.
For example, he uses it when giving compliment to all of his students who have joined the tryout for the debate team. He approves that they are gifted for
having such ability. The utterance itself is performed in the class before he is going to announce which students who will occupy the debate team squad for

: You are gifted, all of you. So I want you to know
that I chose this team for balance, and none of you should take it as a failure, as denigration of your
intellect.
Datum number 19 As in the utterance above, Melvin says,
“You are gifted, all of you”, meaning that he praises and thinks highly of his students for their efforts and
potentials. He does not want to let them fall by hearing the announcement. In other words, he takes notice to their remarkable possessions of competence, which
indicates that he tries to save their positive faces. Therefore, the students feel being appreciated by Melvin as their teacher. This strategy can be more or less the
redressive action of the FTA performed. After he notices and attends to hearer, he performs FTA of request that he asks his students to not take the announcement as
a failure if they cannot make it as one of the debate team members.
