had never encountered before. This was the result of questionnaire item number 4, wh
ich reads “The guessing from context technique helps me find out the meanings of the words I have never encountered before.” The level of agreement
on this questionnaire item reaches 100. This could mean that Clarke and Nation’s procedure for guessing from context can still be taught to the first
semester students of the English Extension Course with more time allotted.
B. Recommendations
Through this section of the thesis, the researcher would like to propose several recommendations to all parties who may benefit from the research.
1. For the Lecturers of English Extension Program
Based on the results of the questionnaire, it can be concluded that Clarke and Nation’s procedure for guessing from context helped the students involved in
the study learn some new vocabulary items. However, the t-test result did not indicate that the vocabulary learning technique significantly helped them. As the
researcher pointed out, this could be the result of the lack of time allotted for the students to thoroughly understand the procedure. Therefore, the researcher
suggests that the lecturers teach the vocabulary learning technique to English Extension Course students with a few necessary adjustments.
Two meetings are clearly not enough for the students to comprehend the guessing from context procedure. Although 60 of the total research subjects
believed that they had fully understood the procedure after two weeks of exposure, the posttest results suggest otherwise. Therefore, the lecturers could
teach the procedure to the students for more than two meetings. Eight meetings should be sufficient for the learners to understand the procedure and use it
appropriately. To help the students understand the procedure quicker, the lecturers could
assign them to do more homework and class discussion. The lecturers should also encourage the students to be more active and ask more questions in the
discussions if they seem confused. During the practice, the students are likely to make many mistakes. It would be most helpful if the lecturers assure the students
that it is completely normal for them to make mistakes during the learning process.
Additionally, anyone who plans on using Clarke and Nation’s guessing from context procedure for teaching purposes must keep in mind that this
procedure can only be taught to more advanced learners, such as college students. This is due to the fact that the procedure requires the learner to analyze the parts
of speech of unknown words as well as recognize the relationships between words and sentences in context.
2. For Future Researchers
As far as the researcher is concerned, this research could have been conducted better. Instead of giving the students more examples of how the
procedure should be done, the researcher asked the students to do the exercise after only one example. This, of course, was because of the time constraint.
Setting a few more examples and asking the students to do the procedure step-by-
