CHAPTER 4. RESEARCH RESULT AND DISCUSSION
This chapter presents the description of the experimental treatment, the results of supporting data, the results of primary data, the analysis of the posttest, the
hypothesis verification, and the discussion. The main activity of the research was to investigate whether or not there was a significant effect of using NHT technique on
the seventh grade students‟ tense achievement at SMPN 2 Balung-Jember in the 20112012 academic year.
4.1 The Description of the Experimental Treatment
As has been explained in Chapter III, the experimental group VII-C received treatment that was teaching tenses by using NHT technique, while the control group
VII-B received no treatment being taught by using lecturing and giving exercise techniques. The teaching learning process was conducted in two meetings. In the
first meeting, the researcher taught Simple Present Tense to the students, while in the second meeting the researcher taught Present Continuous Tense to the students. The
materials for both the experimental and the control groups were all the same, except the activities in teaching tenses.
The researcher faced a problem when teaching tenses using NHT technique dealing with monitoring the students. There were nine groups each group consisted
of 4 students in the experimental class. It was not easy to monitor all students in the same time. Besides, some students rejected the groups which had been formed by the
researcher. To overcome this problem, the researcher was helped by the English teacher of SMPN 2 Balung, Jember, and one of his friends. The teacher asked the
students to make groups as the researcher had formed and monitored the students‟ activities during the discussion process.
