4.2 Rebellion against Religious Regulations

Emile Durkheim argues that the religion is comprised the sacred elements of social life. Durkheim also identifies collective interests and group unity as part of sacred, whereas individual concerns fall into profane category Retrieved fromboundless.com. Emile Durkheim argues that the elements of a religion are comprised of the scared elements of social life. It means that religion cannot stand without the relationship between its regulation and the society. Religious regulation takes the most important place in life to organize the social life. Shoni Labowitz in his book, God, Sex and Women of the Bible, 1998: 89 also expresses that a conventional social scientific view understands religion as a group’s collective beliefs and rituals relating to the supernatural. This thesis analysis Shelley Segal’s rebellion against religious regulations. There are two aspects which Shelley rebel against religious regulations, they are rebellious idea against religious regulations and rebellious idea against hypocrisy. 4.2.1 Rebellious Idea against Religious Regulations 44 All religions have God comments. Even though they have different ways of praying, they purpose to make a better live to others and have a close relationship with God. Ritualorreligiousregulationsarerulesthatmustbe obeyedbyreligious peoplewithoutany reasontobreak. Unfortunately, not all people are comfortable with these regulations. Shelley Segal was not born in the atheist family who didn’t believe in the existence of God. She was born on religious family where her father was known as a local president of synagogue, she is a Jews. Based on this background, Shelleyhas beenaccustomed toreligiousrulesboundin her life. She has followed her family’s religion by years. However, in themidstof her life, shemakes abig surpriseby statingthat shedoesn’t believe the existence of God and doesn’twant tobe boundbyanyrulesanymoreandthen choosestorebel againstreligious institutions. Her choicetoagainst towardsreligionis reasonable. She clearly shows her reasons in songs entitled Eve and Gratitude. Eve is one of the songs in An Atheist Album which talks about the reason why Shelley rebel against religious regulations. This song was written after Shelley had watched a YouTube clip and it stuck in her minds. This video shows a Christian woman who explained to other women why they must submit to their husband. This video really annoyed her. Through this song, she rebel against religious regulation which states that the position of woman is not equal to man, that’s why a woman should submit all the man asked to do. The bible tells me I was made for and from man And I must do for him everything that I can 45 I must surrender to his will, yeah I must submit I can’t make the household decisions coz I am unfit It tells me my place With ever-lasting grace Eve-stanza 1 Shelley opens the song Eve by using I to emphasizes the listener that the subject of this song is herself. Bible is also mentioned in the opening of this song. The Bible is the Holy Book of Christianity. From this first line, Shelley seems to impress the reader’s mind to focus on one religion, it Christianity. The reason why she criticizes Christianity in this song is because she lives in a religious society most of whomare Christian. In first line, she says that the Bible tells her that she was made from and for a man,The bible tells me I was made for and from man-line 1. The bible tells me is a kind figurative of speech of personification where Bible as a noun can acts similar to human acts. In this line, the Bible tells to her that she has been made for and from a man. The Bible announce its regulation to Shelley rather than to another person. This statement seems want to emphasize that Shelly must have obey this regulation too. The Bible tells that a woman is made for and from man,The bible tells me I was made for and from man-line 1. It wants to emphasize that a woman is firstly made for her husband to obey all the commands and later the reason why woman should submit her husband because a woman is made from man. From this line, Shelley opens the song by showing her problem to the listener that a woman should submit the man. After showing that she made for and from a man, Shelley adds that she must do everything she can for man,And I must do for him everything that I can-line 2. It means that whether she likes or not, she has to do whatever her husband commands. Still, the Biblesaysthat her jobis notonly doing what the man commands to her. She also has to 46 surrender to her husband will and submit him,I must surrender to his will, yeah I must submit-line 3. After she talks about the regulations that she has to do, then in the following line she began to express her feeling toward these regulations. In fourth lines, she expresses her sigh that she can’t make the household because she is unfit,I can’t make the household decisions coz I am unfit-line 4. Household and unfit in this case are not a denotation meaning. They are metaphor where household is refers to the way of life and unfit is refers to the inability. Moreover, what Shelley wants to say in this line that a woman can’t choose her own way and must submit all the man’s commands because a woman is not able to walk in their own way. From the first line bythe fourth line Shelley has expressed about the Bible said toward woman’s attitude to man than her close the first stanza by emphasizing that she should do the regulations forever It tells me my place, With ever-lasting grace-line 56. In this first stanza, she opens the song by showing what she rebel against religious regulations. Shearguesthat it is unfairwhen the men andwomenare createdwithdifferent positionsin religious life. She clearly shows her rebellion against this situation wherea womancannot choosingher own way. Then, in the following stanza, she emphasizes again about her feelings towards the religious regulation against the position of man and woman. The bible tells me I must be silent you can’t hear my voice My role has been divinely defined and I have no other choice I may not be a teacher of man, I must cover up my shame These are the laws of the one who in vain I cannot name He tells me my place With ever-lasting grace Eve-stanza 2 47 In the second stanza, the Bible is continuously talks about how woman’s attitude towards the man. Shelley expresses that the Bible tells her to be silent until no one can hear her voices, only the men who are allowed to speak. Inthiscondition, the womenmayfeelunfair, depressedandbored, buttheyare notallowedtospeakandexpresstheirfeelingsto the world. Then, she says that her role has been defined so that she can’t change her life even though with hard effort,My role has been divinely defined and I have no other choice-line 8. It seems she wants to show that women feel uncomfortable in this situation and she want to get freedom but unfortunately her life has been defined. Then, in the following line she says that she could not possibly be a teacher of man I may not be a teacher of man, I must cover up my shame -line 9. She wants to say that she has more capability than othermen, but the Bible said that a woman must be silent then she has to submit and cover her shame. This is expressed that a woman not only obeys all what the man says, but she also be silent. The last line is the repetition of the first stanza,He tells me my place, With ever-lasting grace-line 1112. Same with the first stanza, in the second stanza Shelley also mentions about the Bible that this book is good with its grace, but she doesn’t like with the rule which showing that the position between womn and woman is not equal. But, what makes them different that in the first stanza she says that the Bible talks to her about her place rather than in the second stanza she uses he to refers the man who vain that she doesn’t know,These are the laws of the one who in vain I cannot name-line 10. The bible tells me that I am unclean I am impure you cannot touch me and it has nothing to do with where I’ve been It is part of who I am, It is because I corrupt man 48 I was asking for it just by being a woman He tells me my place With ever-lasting grace Eve-stanza 4 The attitude of women towards the men is not only stop at the second stanza, but also discussed in the fourth stanza. The fourth stanza also talks about the position of the woman in a religious life. Shelley opens the fourth stanza by explaining that the Bible talks to her anymore. In this stanza the Bible says that she is unclean,The bible tells me that I am unclean-line 15. It means that she full of sins. In almost all of stanzas, Shelley repeatsThe bible tells me, this is a repetition where this device functions to emphasize the important point. Shelley repeats The bible tells me for four times in this song. She repeats this sentence wants to emphasize to the reader that she doesn’t complain to some people who follow a religion but she rebels against the rules or regulations in the Bible, especially towards the position between women and men. In fourth stanza, the Bible tells again about who a woman is. The Bible says that a woman is unclean,The bible tells me that I am unclean-line15. Uncleanmeansthatthe personisdirty. Dirty in this case is a metaphor which means sin. So, this statement explains that a woman is unclean because of her sins. However, inthissongShelleyonlyshows the women’ssin, shedoes notshow themen’s sin. Thiscaseshowsthatwomenare only seen fromthe negative side not in positive side. TheBible describes that a woman is unclean so they can’t be touched and it has nothing to do about this condition,I am impure you cannot touch me and it has nothing to do with where I’ve been-line17. It describes how weak a woman is that she can’t clean up and unfortunately no one cared about her. In the following lines Shelley expresses the reason why woman is described so unclean. It is because she is a corrupt 49 man,It is part of who I am, It is because I corrupt man-line 18. A corrupt man in this case means that a woman can damage the life of a man that is why a woman does not have equal status with man. As usual, this stanza also closed by a repetition of everlasting grace,With ever-lasting grace-line 20. This shows a contrast condition where in the previous lines Shelley expresses a negative side from the Holy Bible, but in this line she shows a positive side of the Bible. Shelley wants to mention that the Bible is good with everlasting grace, but she disagrees with the rules in Bible that women do not equal with men. From the first and second stanza, it is known that Shelley is expressive in rebelling against the religious regulations, especially about the position between man and woman. In the third stanza, she emphasizes about what the Bible says to her. The woman’s life has been defined to comply the men because women’s voices are not being heard by religious men. Then, Shelley explains what women will get if they combat these inequalities. She says that the punishment for wanting to learn is a painful birth from which she may not return,And my punishment for wanting to learn; Is a painful birth from which I may not return- lines 1314. This is show how poor to be a woman. Shelley emphasizes the position of women who do not have a choice in their lives in religious regulation in the song Eve. She expresses that the life of women are poor.Actually, what Shelley rebel not only about the position between women and men in religious life. She also mentions the common issues in her surroundings about gratitude. Based on this issue, she creates a song with the same title of the issue, it is Gratitude. 50 The songGratitude is Shelley Segal’s another song which lifts the theme of rebellion against religious institutions, especially towards how to be grateful in life. In the song Gratitude, Shelley makes the point that somebody doesn’t need to be too religious to appreciate and be grateful in their life. In facing the dissatisfaction, fear, loneliness and the rest of life’s hardships, it is possible to be overwhelmed with gratitude. She is sure of her perspective that to live in this world, it doesn’t need to belief a specific religion or be religious in life to be able to expressgratitude. Life can be hard, things can get rough Stay on your guard and protect the good stuff Sometimes we all feel like we’ve had enough Gratitude-stanza 1 The first stanza in the song Gratitude, Shelley tries to describe the world that life can be hard and everything will be rough,Life can be hard, things can get rough-line 1. What Shelley says in this line is appropriate with the condition nowadays where all things seems to be rough, such as how to get job, the destruction of nature which threaten the human life until the new deadly diseases in this world. This is the problems should be faced by people nowadays.. After describing the problems, then in the following line she gives her advice that even though in this trouble condition they must stay on their guard and protect the good stuff,Stay on your guard and protect the good stuff-line 2. Guard in this case is a metaphor which refers to what they believe. Thus, Shelley wants to say to people that what they believe will protect them from the confusion. In the third lines, she mentions that sometimes they feel tired,Sometimes we 51 all feel like we’ve had enough-line 3. From this statement Shelley wants to express that women are fed up with it all. Coz one day my memories will all be gone Not a single one of all whom I love will go on I’m afraid of the end yeah I don’t want it all to But it won’t take away from my gratitude Gratitude-stanza 4 In the fourth stanza, Shelley mentions that all things are not everlasting, including any memory in the mind. Shelly says that one day she will lose all her memories,Coz one day my memories will all be gone-line 11. From this statement she expresses that she is just an ordinary person who will lose her memories one day, not only may she forget about the beautiful things but she may also be forgetting who she loved,Not a single one of all whom I love will go on-line 12. Moreover, in the following line she expresses her feeling toward this condition thatshe feels no fear if one day she must lose the memories of the people she loved and to the contrary that people will forget her. Furthermore, when she cannot avoid this situation, it will not take of her gratitude. She will be grateful even one day people will forget of her kindness. I’d rather find out what’s real than deny The truth may be hard but it’s better than living a lie So before disaster strikes and everything I’ve built comes unglued I’ll be revelling and dancing in my gratitude Gratitude-stanza 9 As the final of the lyrics, Shelley implies her choice in the last stanza. She mentions that she will try hard to find out the reality than deny it,I’d rather find out what’s real than deny-line 28. She thinks that everything which will happen in her life, 52 she will choose to seek the truth first than to deny it. Shelley realizes this truth may be difficult or even away from her shadows, but she mentions that she will choose to face it rather than living in a lie,The truth may be hard but it’s better than living a lie-line 29. It shows Shelley’s personality which is realistic in facing the world. At the end, she says that even when the disaster strikes her and everything she had built will collapse, she will stay standing in her choice to reveling and dancing in her gratitude,I’ll be revelling and dancing in my gratitude-line 31. Both the songsEve and Gratitude are two songs which expresses Shelley Segal’s rebellion against religious regulations. There are two kinds of regulations that she rebels. Firstly is about the position between women and men in the religious life. In Eve, Shelley mentions that every woman should obey the man, and they do not have choice in their lives. Through this song Shelley expresses that women’s voices are not be heard by religious men. Secondly is the regulation towards how to be grateful in her life. In the first stanza Shelley expresses that she life in religious people where they believe that their savior will help them in the confusion situation. Thus, she shows that it does not need a great power to be able to express gratitude in life,I don’t believe in a great power to say thank you to-line 20. Neither ceremony, liturgy, creeds, sacraments nor money has ever brought one soul into a reconciled relationship to God to be able gratitude in life. Further, as the closing of the song, she mentions that although she has to face the troubles, she will prefer finding out the truth to denying it and above of these all, she will dance in her gratitude,I’ll be reveling and dancing in my gratitude-line 31. In this modern era, most of people have chosen a certain religion in their lives. Religion is no longer taboo anymore to be talked. Religion becomes one of the main 53 purposes which must be fulfilled in human life. Religion becomes a tool to fulfill the desire to be able to communicate with God. But, nowadays people have lost the important things about religion. Religion does not have the functionality to satisfy the desire for close to God anymore; religion has been used only to show a persons identity. People identified themselves as a religious people but in the reality they have lost connection with God. They only do the rituals and forget the essential things in their lives. American Religious Identification Survey ARIS release that the 35 million Americans generation have became less Christian and less Republican over the course of their adult lives, a new study by the Trinity Collage shows, Retrieved from commons.trincoll. This survey shows that people begin to leave their religious life. This situation also affects Shelley to write a song House with no Walls in her album entitled An Atheist Album. This song talks about people nowadays who have chosen a specific religion just for their identity and regardless the regulations. 4.2.2 Rebellious Idea against Hypocrisy In An Atheist Album, Shelley describes her feelings towards the people nowadays who like to combine their knowledge with some religious rules. She thinks that this is a kind of hypocrite people. In the song House with No Walls and Apocalyptic Love Song she mentions two kinds of hypocrite’s people in this album. In a song House With no Walls, she criticized people in this age who choose to follow a certain religion, but they do not follow the law entirely. They simply choose the rules are easy to do and refuse which is something that difficult to be done. Shelley did not agree with this condition and later she rebels against hypocrite people. 54 The songHouse With No Walls is one of Shelley Segal’s song which talks about the background towards her perspective of the people’s attitudes nowadays. This song is inspired by her close friend who chooses to believe in a specific religion and then this man is used as the representation of people in this time. Her Friendobeyed thereligious regulation that he has chosen, butthenhedoes notobeyall the religious regulations. He is just doing what makes him happy and feels comfortable and rejects the other rules that are too difficult to do. In addition, he created a version of his own perspective. This condition then used as the background of the themes raised in the song House With No Walls in her album titled An Atheist Album. You’re standing in house with no walls You don’t wanna leave coz it feels like home You’re sitting in a house with no floor You can feel the mud seeping in But you just choose to ignore House With No Walls-stanza 1 As the opening of House With No Walls, Shelley uses You as the main subject in this song, it shows by the using repetition of You as fourth times in this stanza. ‘ You in this case refers to her friend, because this song is inspired by him. In the first line, she draws there is a house, and her friend is standing in that house,You’re standing in house with no walls-line 1. Unlike the other houses, this house has no walls. House in this case is a metaphor which refers to the religious institution. Religion and house have the same function; it is to protect everything in it. In the first line Shelley expresses that her friend is standing in a house, so she seems want to say that her friend 55 has already choose a specific religion in his live. After she had expressed that her friend had chosen a specific religion, then she expressed about the feeling of her friend towards religion. She states that her friend comforts with his choice even though the house is not whole any more. He doesn’t want to leave because he feels like at home,You don’t wanna leave coz it feels like home-line 2. There is a repetition of meaning in this first stanza; ‘they are house and home ‘as the way to emphasize the object in House With No Walls. In this song, Shelley just observes what her friend does. After she describes the condition of the house and the feeling of her friend towards the house, then she expresses what her friend doing in this house. The man is sitting in a house with no floor, so that can feel the mud seeping in. From this statement is known that the condition of the house is really bad. Shelley also uses metaphor in line 4,You can feel the mud seeping in-line 4, where mud in this line refers to the sin. In the first stanza Shelley want to show the reader that she has a friend, and this man has chosen a specific religion and comfort with his decision. Thus, Shelley mentions that the condition of religious life of her friend is nasty, but the man doesn’t matter with this condition. All the evidence that what you think isn’t real You don’t look because you don’t like the way it makes you feel You say you need the shelter to get through all your falls That’s why you choose to live in a house with no walls House with no Walls-stanza 2 The songHouse with no Walls is a song inspired by Shelley Segal’s friend towards his attitude to the religious regulations he has chosen. In the first stanza Shelley expresses the religious life of her friend by using a house as the object but this house has not walls. In the following stanza, Shelley expresses the reasons why her friend chose to 56 live in a house with no walls. She mentions that her friend chose a specific religion because he needed a shelter to help his life upon the sins,You say you need the shelter to get through all your falls-line 8. When somebody has already chosen their specific religion, so it is a duty for them to obey all the regulations, but Shelley’s friend gives the opposite attitude of it. Shelley expresses that the man regardless the evidences of religious regulations and think that it is not real,All the evidence that what you think isn’t real-line 6. He rejected some regulations because he just want to see how the way what makes him feel better,You don’t look because you don’t like the way it makes you feel- line 8. Further, Shelley closes the stanza with emphasize the main topic by saying that’s why you choose to live in a house with no walls. You’re wearing the emperor’s new clothes You think they’ll protect you from the world but how can you be sure You’re wearing anything at all? Even when the others tell you that your raincoat is worth more than House With no Walls-stanza 3 Then, Shelley’s friend still a main subject in the third stanza, it shows by the repetition of Youin every lines. She describes that the man is wearing a new clothe, it is the emperor of clothing,You’re wearing the emperor’s new clothes-line 10. Emperor clothes are not made like other ordinary general clothes. The emperor clothes designed to protect the body among the war. The man wearing the emperor clothes hoped that they will protect him from the war. The emperor clothes are a figurative speech of metaphor which refers to the religious regulations. The man wearing emperor clothes means that he has done the religious regulations, but Shelley doubt about it. In the following lines, she describes her doubts by asking You think they’ll protect you from the 57 world but how can you be sure, You’re wearing anything at all? lines1112. Shelley doubtfuls that the man is not sufficiently protected because he is not wearing the emperor clothes at all. However, the man looks like wearing a raincoat rather than wearing the emperor clothes. From this parable is known that the man is not obeying the religious regulations at all. He just obeys some regulations which seem easy to do and profitable to him. This man refers to the people nowadays in Shelley’s perspective. Unfortunately, her friend does not have the same opinion with her. The man feels like wearing the emperor clothes, but Shelley looks him wearing a raincoat instead,Even when the others tell you that your raincoat is worth more than-line 13. It shows that people don’t realize what they are doing in their live. They think that they have done the right one by following the religious regulations, but actually what the others see is it is stupid. Each rules or regulations established to make people to have a better life. However, as Shelley has observed her friend that people difficult to live within religious regulations. Shelley’s friend in this song refers to the people today who think that they have done the religious one, but what they are really is the opposite. Based on her opinion, it is better to reject all dogma than not follow the regulations at all,All the out dated dogma why don’t you let it go-line 19. Shelley Segal was born in religious family, but she thinks that she cannot follow the regulations at all, that’s how Shelley choose her own way to get the freedom even though she rebelled against the religion. Shelley Segal describes people in this time do not like to be bounded in some rules or regulations as the theme in some of her songs. In An Atheist Album she wrote seven songs where each song describes of her thoughts and attitudes. This album is an 58 expression of her rebellion against some issues associated with religion, such as rebel against the religious regulations, rebel against religious dogma, rebel against the existence of God and Supernatural power and the last is her rebellion against hypocrite people. Above of those songs, Shelley expresses that she rejects all things connected with religion. The song of Shelley Segal’s describing of her characters which is simple and does not like to be bounded in any regulations. It shows by mostly using metaphor in describing her minds rather than using other figurative speeches. She likes to expresses her mind by using denotative meaning as the symbol of people in twentieth century were less using poetical devices. She also doesn’t like to live under religious regulations. It is clearly shows by some her statements in her songs. Actually, what Shelley writes in An Atheist Album is not only talk about her rebellion against some religious aspects. She also gives her wishes for the future life. She wants to survives and be meaningful in her life. She expresses this feeling in Apocalyptic Love Song. Apocalyptic Love Song consists of sixth stanza where first two stanzas are consist of three lines and followed by a stanza which consists of six lines. In this song, Shelley again usesI to refer herself as the main subject. This song talks about the relationship between Shelley and Christopher, her boyfriend, and imagine the setting of time is when the sun is going to die. This song shows Shelley’s attitudes after declaring her rejection and rebellion. One day the sun is going to die For us it means no more sunsets To the universe, just one less star in the sky Apocalyptic Love Song-stanza 1 59 In the first stanza Shelley opens the song by describing the setting of time. Shelley invites the reader to imagine that one day the sun is going to die,One day the sun is going to die-line 1. Sun is the centre of scholar system which has a strong power to lighten the universe. Then, she expresses her opinion in the following lines. In her opinion, for them when sun is going to die it means that no more sunsets,For us it means no more sunsets-line 2. Sunset is identical with something romantic, so from this line Shelley wants to say that when the sun is going to die, it means that their romantic relationship is over. But, for the universe, sun is going to die means that only one star in the sky which is fall from the billion stars. It implies that there is no a big change for the universe. Sun which is going to die is the metaphor which the denotative meaning is the end of the day. And yes I understand that my whole life is just a blink of an eye in the history of the earth, as with each moment that goes by but this moment that I’m with you It feels like time has stood still It feels somehow like it matters And that it always will Apocalyptic Love Song-stanza 3 Then, in the third stanza Shelley expresses her opinion towards the earth. In this stanza she realizes that her whole life is just a blink of an eye where the time goes quickly and can be repeated again,And yes I understand that my whole life is just a blink of an eye-line 7. She mentions that although the time goes by and can’t be stopped; she is comfortable and calm because she has a moment with her hero, Christopher. She says that when she spends the moment with the man seems the time has stood still,It feels like time has stood still-line 10. It shows that Shelley does not worry about what happens with the sun going on because she has her own hero. 60 In one billion years, the oceans will dry While somehow life may continue It will not be known to you and I Apocalyptic Love Song-stanza 4 In the fourth stanza, Shelley still describes her feeling towards the man. She says that even in one billion years the ocean will dry, but in the other hand life may continue. One billion means for a long time. In this stanza Shelley seems want to say that even they have a long relationship, they still don’t know their future,It will not be known to you and I-line 15\. Shelley wants to show her feeling to survive in life. She mentions that even the ocean will dry up and all things became hard, she will not stop to these problems but survives in life. Apocalyptic Love Song is the last song in An Atheist Album. This song is written last, but it is reasonable. After Shelley expresses her rebellion against some aspects in religion, then she closes the album by saying that above all of her rebellion, she still survives in her life despite all things will be rough and hard. This song is written by Shelley Segal who wants to survive in her life even though the sun is going to die. In this song, Shelley also expresses that the whole life is only a blink of eye. It means that all things in this earth will be quickly passed, and cannot be stopped. Thus, from this song she wants to influence the reader that even though all things will pass, but the spirit of survival will not be lost in human life. The songs Eve and Gratitude express Shelley Segal’s rebellion against religious regulations. In the song Eve, Shelley describes her feeling towards the Biblical ruling that woman should sumbit the man. Shelley rejects this injustice because she mentions 61 that woman has the same position with the man. In her another song, she also mentions towards how to be grateful in life. In the song Gratitude, Shelley describes her rebellion against the religious regulations towards be grateful. She expresses that people doesn’t need too religious in live to be grateful, because all people can be grateful without choose any certan religion. Moreover, Shelley segals also rebel against the hypocrisy in the song House with no Walls because people in her society choose a certain religion is to complete their life without obey the religious regulations at all. As the final, Shelley Segal close her album by giving her wishes that even though she doesn’t choose any specific religion, but she wish has a good future. 62 CHAPTER V CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTION
