ABSTRACT

  

IMPROVING STUDENTS’ COMPETENCE IN WRITING RECOUNT TEXT

THROUGH CHAIN STORY GAME

  This Classroom Action Research aimed at improving students’ competence in writing recount text through chain story game. The research was conducted at one of the Junior High Schools in Sempor, Kebumen with 27 students of class VIIIG as the subject of the research. It was done for five months (January - May 2012).

  The researcher used Classroom Action Research (CAR) as the method of the research. To do this research, the researcher worked collaboratively with the English teacher. The CAR was done based on the Kemmis and McTaggart’s design. The researcher took two cycles with two actions in each cycle.

  The data were collected through observation, writing test, questionnaire, interview, and documentation. The researcher employed qualitative and quantitative data as technique for analyzing data. The qualitative data were analyzed based on the students’ and teacher’s interview result, while the quantitative data were analyzed based on students’ writing result, students’ observation result, and questionnaire.

  The data analysis showed that Chain Story game improved the students’ writing competence. The mean of students’ writing competence was described as follows; pre test showed 50.92, Cycle 1 showed 58.85, and Cycle 2 showed 63.85.Therefore, the improvement of mean from pre test until post test Cycle 2 was 25.39 %. It was also supported by the observation and questionnaire result. The data of observation showed that the average of the students’ improvement in writing activities in Cycle 1 was 27.81 % and Cycle 2 was 74.99 %. Then the improvement from Cycle 1 to Cycle 2 was 47.17 %. Moreover, most of the students gave positive responses to the implementation of chain story game. The average percentage of all questions who answer “yes” was 84.56%. Based on the result of interview the students and teacher also gave good responses. It could be summarized that chain story game could improve the students’ competence in writing recount and could make the students be active in teaching learning process. Moreover, the students and teacher also gave positive responses about the implementation of chain story game.
