ABSTRACT
Introduction. The pathogenesis of Dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) is still unclear. Cytokines are
among several factors that play an important role in the pathogenesis of DHF. The aim of this study
is to look at the role of proinflamatory cytokines, in particular TNF-α and its possible relationship
with outcome. Methods. It is a prospective cohort study. Blood samples were collected from 160
patients of DHF without shock that admitted in Pediatric department Medical faculty Hasanuddin
University/Wahidin Sudirohusodo General Hospital from January 2008 to February 2010. The
subjects were followed up until occurrences of either shock or non-shock outcomes whereof 37
shock DHF patients and 123 without shock were obtained. The diagnosis of DHF was established
using the WHO 1975 criteria. Serum TNF-α was measured using a quantitative sandwich enzyme
immunoassay technique. Results. The initial serum levels of TNF-α were increased significantly in
both groups, however the level was higher in the group of DHF who underwent shock (p
