C. Students’ Perception on the Limitations of the Implementation of Peer
Feedback in Writing Report Texts
This section answers the third research problem in the problem formulation. To discover the limitations of the implementation of peer feedback in writing
report texts, the researcher employed the open-ended questions in the questionnaire. The researcher considered that the participants’ perception on these
statements was derived from their thoughts and opinions.
a. The Limitations of Peer Feedback Based on Questionnaire
In order to discover the limitations of the implementation of peer feedback in writing report texts, the researcher asked the participants to state the differences
between peer feedback and teacher feedback. By stating the differences between peer feedback and teacher feedback, the researcher expected to reveal whether the
participants preferred to receive feedback from their peers rather than their teacher.
From the classification table of students’ answers to the open-ended questions in Appendix D, the differences between peer feedback and teacher
feedback stated by the participants were varied. Majority of the participants stated that teacher feedback was more accurate and correct while peer feedback was not
necessarily true. However, there were 24.28 of the participants argued that peer feedback was more relaxed and they didn’t need to be embarrassed to ask their
peers while teacher feedback was more formal rather than peer feedback. Then, 15.71 of the participants merely stated that peer feedback was feedback given
64 by peers and teacher feedback was feedback given by teacher. Moreover, 1.42
of the participants argued that peer feedback improved the cooperative skill and knowledge while teacher feedback only improved the writing skill. Last, 7.14 of
the participants stated that the focus of peer feedback was correcting their mistakes while the focus of teacher feedback was teaching and correcting their
mistakes in writing report texts. The researcher revealed that majority of the participants preferred to receive feedback from their teacher. The reason why
majority of the participants preferred to receive feedback from their teacher rather than their peers was the participants believed that feedback given by their teacher
was more correct and accurate rather than feedback given by their peers. Further, the researcher also asked the participants to mention the challenges
they discovered in giving feedback. The researcher revealed there were some challenges that the participants discovered when they gave feedback to their
peers’ report texts. From the classification table of students’ answer to the open- ended questions in Appendix D, it was shown that the challenges discovered by
the participants in giving feedback were varied. There were 7.14 of the participants who stated that they had to think carefully before giving feedback and
should be accurate in giving feedback, 27.14 of the participants argued that they were afraid of giving wrong feedback to their peers’ report texts, and 12.85 of
the participants were afraid that their peers were offended by their comments. Moreover, there were 18.57 of the participants stated they had problems with
grammar, 7.14 of the participants mentioned that they didn’t understand some difficult words, and 20 of the participants stated that they didn’t understand
65 some sentences in their peers’ report texts. The researcher revealed that the
challenges mentioned by the participants affected their willingness to give feedback to their peers’ report texts. Therefore, the percentages of disagree and
strongly disagree in Figure 4.2 were quite high, 29 participants 41.42 disagreed and 1 participants 1.43 strongly disagreed from 70 participants.
