Social Skills and Positive Interdependence

51 Research statement number 25 was to find out whether cooperative learning implemented in class encouraged the students to give suggestion for improvement on their friends‟ performances. The result of the research showed there was one student 3.22 strongly agreed and 22 students 70.96 agreed that group work encouraged the students to give suggestion for improvement on their friends‟ performance. There were one student 3.22 strongly disagreed and seven students 22.58 disagreed to that research statement. It turned out that cooperative learning did not make the students be able to help other students for improvement. The students that answered disagree and strongly disagree talked about their own proficiency and their own knowledge as the matters. The student talked about big responsibility the student had in cooperative learning and the lack of English as the main problem. The student stated: No, I did not feel so. I was the one who needed the improvement. I could not give suggestion for my friends because of my lack of English. Big responsibility they had in cooperative learning and the schedule management of the group. Interviewee 4 The research statement number 26 asked whether the teaching method implemented in class enabled the students and their friends to work together in completing difficult tasks. The result showed that there were nine students 29.03 strongly agreed and 18 students 58.06 agreed that they liked experiencing cooperative learning in English class because the students realized that each individual affect success and the work of the others. Students must share information in order to complete their tasks because the work is structured Johnson et al., 1994. However, four students 12.90 disagreed to the research statement. 52 The twenty-seventh research statement was to find out if cooperative learning method helps the students to work with friends cooperatively. The result of this statement showed that 14 students 45.16 strongly agreed and 16 students 51.61 agreed to the statement. One of the students disagreed that cooperative learning method helped the students to work with friends cooperatively. They could work together naturally because of several factors. They stated: I could work with my friends especially when I had something to ask, I directly asked related to the materials or tasks to my friends. Interviewee 1 I ussually works with my friends in class. But I rarely works with my friends at home. The reason is because the teacher rarely give us groupwork tasks outside the class. Sometimes, whenever my friends and I need a notebook or computer, we have to go to one of myfriends house that has a notebook or a computer to complete the tasks. Interviewee 3 Research statement number 28 asked whether the teaching method used in class encouraged the students to be confident in sharing their knowledge with their friends in the same group. There were one student 3.22 answered strongly disagree and three students 9.67 answered disagree. There were 27 students choose either strongly agree or agree, four of the students 16.12 strongly agreed and 23 of the students 70.96 agreed that the teaching method implemented in class encouraged the students to be confident in sharing the stu dents‟ knowledge with the students‟ friends. Research statement number 29 asked whether the teaching method used in class encouraged the students to be confident in sharing the students‟ knowledge with the students‟ friends in a class discussion. The result showed that one out of 31 students 3.22 strongly agreed with the research statement. 25 students 53 80.64 agreed that the individual assignment could enrich the students‟ English proficiency. Yet, there were four students 12.90 answered disagree and one student 3.22 answered strongly disagree. They did not have the same idea that cooperative learning used in class encouraged the students to be confident in sharing the students‟ knowledge with the students‟ friends in a class discussion. The reason that the students claimed were because they put lack of interest in English. I do not possess English well. So I am not confident enough in sharing my knowledge related to English materials. Interviewee 2 Well, I do not like English. Hence, my friends were responsible to complete the task. They also explained the task, taught and gave me suggestion for improvement in learning English. Interviewee 5 The research statement number 30, the teaching method used in class encourages the students to speak fluently in front of public, was to discover the students‟ encouragement to speak fluently after experiencing cooperative learning in English class. There were three students 9.67 strongly agreed and 14 students 45.16 agreed to the statement. There were 12 students 38.70 answered D Disagree and two of the students 6.45 strongly disagreed to the research statement. Despite the positive, there were twelve students answered disagree and two students answered strongly disagree. It could be inferred that 38.70 and 6.45 of the students did not encouraged to speak fluently after experiencing cooperative learning in English class. I did not understand and possess the materials well, therefore, I could not speak fluently in front of the class. Interviewee 5 Research question number 31 was to find out whether the students encouraged being confident in sharing the students‟ opinions in a class discussion. 54 There were five students 16.12 strongly agreed and 17 students 54.83 agreed to the research statement. It turned out that the students encouraged being confident in sharing the students‟ opinions in a class discussion even though nine of the students 29.03 disagreed with that research statement. They claimed that the students‟ English proficiency was the matter. The students were not confident enough because they had limited vocabulary to speak English in front of the class. That is why whatever methods or approaches implemented in the class will not merely make the students to be able to speak English fluently. Research statement number 32 asked whether the students were actively involved in class activities. There were four students 12.90 strongly agreed to the statement and 21 students 67.74 agreed. Yet, six students 19.35 disagreed. It meant more than 80 in total of the students were triggered to actively involve in a class activities because of the implementation of cooperative learning. However, 19.35 6 students of the students were not triggered to involve.

4. Students’ Role and Student-to-Student Interaction

Table 4.4 below shows the students‟ role as members of groups that not only works cooperatively but also have to be the director of the students‟ own learning Richards and Rodgers, 2001 and shows the students‟ interaction with others Johnson et al., 1994. The researcher purposed 14 research statements Adapted from Dandy Jalu‟s Thesis, 2011 about the students‟ opinions toward the students‟ experiences in cooperative learning implemented in English class. 55 Table 4.4 The students’ role and student-to-student interaction toward cooperative learning in English class No. Questions SA A D SD 33. The result of the research showed that there were seven students 22.58 strongly agreed and 18 students 58.06 agreed that they were able to complete the tasks independently. On the other hand, six of 31 students 19.35 were not. Whether the teaching method used in class helped the students to develop the students‟ proficiency independently or not was presented in the research statement number 34. The result showed that six students 19.35 strongly agreed and 16 students 51.61 agreed that cooperative learning made the students active in developing the students‟ creativity but nine students were opposing the statement; there were eight students 25.80 disagreed and one student 3.22 strongly disagreed to the research statement. The students claimed: Yes, I admit that I do not have well proficiency in English. However, I try to improve it independently by reading passages or answering questions from other references. Sometimes, my family member and my friends help me in translating the difficult vocabularies. Interviewee 2 I rarely studies English, despite the lesson in the class. I feel that I do not need it yet. Interviewee 5 Research statement number 35 was to find out if cooperative learning method could help the student s to explore the students‟ own learning strategy and to find new learning strategy by themselves. In the simpler way, the researcher was about to find out if the students were not given a project work, they still learn other English topics. The result showed that there were five students 16.12 57 chose strongly agree and 22 students 70.96 agreed that they were able to explore the students‟ learning strategy and to find new learning strategy by themselves after experiencing cooperative learning in English class. On the other hand, four students 12.90 stated that they disagreed to the research statement outside the class the students conducted their own in-depth learning of English by themselves. Research statement number 36 asked whether the teaching method implemented in class helped the students to develop their knowledge independently. In other words, the researcher was about to find out if the students could get deeper understanding of English after experiencing cooperative. As many as five students 16.12 chose strongly agree, 22 students 70.96 agreed and four students 12.90 disagreed. Thus, it could be concluded that more than 80 of the class could get deeper understanding of English after experiencing cooperative learning. Therefore, even they were not asked to develop their knowledge independently they still wanted to broader their knowledge and the rest did not. Research statement number 37 was to find out whether the students were encouraged to discuss a difficult English material with their friends without any command. The result showed that eight students 25.80 strongly agreed and 23 students 74.19 agreed that they were encouraged to discuss a difficult English material with their friends. It indicated that all of the students did not merely look for books or dictionaries but they tried to ask and discuss the material with their 58 friends. Neither of the students disagreed with the statement nor strongly disagreed. These were what they said: I strongly agrred to the statement especially when my friends and I completing the tasks. Interviewee 1 Yes of course I was encoursged to discuss a difficult English material with my friends. I also opened the book andor asked my teacher to consult. Interviewee 3 Research statement number 38 asked whether the teaching method used in class enabled the students to help other students in doing the difficult task. There were two students 6.45 strongly agreed to the statement and 21 students 67.74 agreed. Yet, seven students 22.58 disagreed and one student 3.22 strongly disagreed. It meant more than 70 of the students were able to help other students when they had difficulties because of the implementation of cooperative learning. Several of the students considered that their proficiency in English was the matters. They were exactly the group members who need to be helped. Research question number 39 was to find out whether cooperative learning method implemented in class encouraged the students to give suggestion for improvement on their friends‟ performance as Johnson et al. 1994 said that the students have to provide constructive feedback and challenge other member‟s reasoning and ideas. There were one student 3.22 strongly agreed and 21 students 67.74 agreed to the research statement. It turned out that the students were able to give suggestion for improvement on their friends‟ performance even though 9 of the students 29.03 disagreed with the statement. They claimed that their proficiency was the matter. They stated:
